Description: Mammoth, wood, etc.. Japan, 19th cent. This sagemono was a container for red sealing wax with the unusual eccentric form of a skull and was carved in red-brown wood. The skull is emphasized in its height and has a removable cap. In addition, there are three ojime in quite diverse materials: One is cubic and the others are spherical. The netsuke is also interesting. It is made of mammoth and represents an irregular cube that has slightly rounded edges. Condition Report: Frame rubbing, with corresponding restoration around the edges. A number of vertical cracks in the surface, with corresponding inpaint. Scattered restoration on the face and the ear. A number of shadows and contours are reinforced. Scattered abrasion. Small landscape painting depicting a cottage beside stream at left with steepled buildings in background surrounded by trees under overcast and stormy sky. Verso of frame with two red wax seal collector's stamp, one legible indicating that the painting was part of the collection of Alexander Cecil Fenton (Bayonne, New Jersey). Verso of wood panel (behind metal sheet) pencil inscribed "The Passing Storm by Gainsborough sold at Christie's 1842-43, from the Alexander Cecil Fenton Coll.". Verso of frame between wax seals with hand written ink script reading "Landscape near Moray Firth" with additional illegible text. Framed approximately 8.25" x 10.25". Unframed approximately 4.2" x 6.25". Note: Works from Alexander Cecil Fenton's fine art collection are noted in "Old and Modern Paintings by the Great Masters Forming the Important Collection of Mr. John Anderson", produced by the American Art Association,New York City, New York in 1916 as a part of their illustrated catalogue where they sold Mr. Anderson's collection. A small tablet is mounted on top of the frame with a designation in Latin. On the reverse one finds a paper document from the 19th century, inscribed with ink in Latin, including remains of an old wax seal and a textile fragment representing a coat of arms.The copper plate is in good condition considering to its age. The plate is minimally bent, the silver and brass patina is rubbed off in some places. The paper document is vertically torn and glued to the frame at the left edge.
