[Manuscripts, Incarnation] Anonymous, early 1700

Lot 109: [Manuscripts, Incarnation] Anonymous, early 1700

by Bibliopathos

March 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Milano, Italy

Estimated Price: €800 - €1,000

Description: EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT ON INCARNATIONIN ITS CONTEMPORARY VELLUM BINDING Anonymous. Tractatus de incarnatione. Romae: Typis Mascardi, 1641 (but about early XVIII cent.). Manuscript in-8vo (192x128 mm), contemporary full parchment, with little four bands at spine, handwritten title at spine, head-bands (light traces of use, some little spots); pp. (4), 842, (6 b.); empty title-page in a richly decorated frame with printer's data at bottom (Romae: Typis Mascardi, 1641); text in Latin.A voluminous and interesting unpublished manuscript on Incarnation; it is a study copy, written probably on early 1700.The Incarnation in traditional Christianity is the belief that the second person of the Trinity, also known as God the Son or the Logos (Word), "became flesh" by being conceived in the womb of Mary, also known as the Theotokos (Birth-giver to God) or "Mater Dei" (mother of God). The Incarnation, then, is the God-man Jesus Christ. Provenance: Even if the book has no signature and no ownership inscription, it comes for sure from the private collection of the heirs of the Romanelli's family (a noble family, from the province of Rome, of landowners, priests, lawyers and administrators of church properties). Furthermore, it can be attributed to a certain gentleman Pietro Angelo Romanelli (Domino Petro Angelo de Romanellis), since the handwriting of the text and the binding of the book are completely analogous to those of another manuscript written by this gentleman (see: Bibliopathos Auctions, Rare Law Books, Documents & Manuscripts, 15 Jan. 2015, Lot 113).References: Not present in ICCU; not in OCLC.

Condition Report: Crispy leaves, light browning. A fine copy.

Jivan Ram, Raja (fl. 1825-1840) - Portrait of Lieutenant Jasper Trower, of the Bengal Horse Artillery

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

March 25, 2015, 10:00 AM GMT

Newbury, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £2,000 - £3,000

Description: Oil on canvas Signed and dated Jeewun Ram 1827 lower left, with indistinct Sanskrit inscription underneath 35.5 x 31 cm. (14 x 12 1/4 in) Provenance: the Trower family; by descent to the present owner Comparative literature: William Sleeman, Rambles and Recollections , London, 1844, vol. ii, pp.285-7 J.P. Losty, Of Far Off Lands and People: Paintings from India 1783-1881 , Indar Pasricha Fine Art exh. cat., London, 1993) J.P. Losty, Indian Portraiture in the British Period , The Indian Portrait, 1850-1860', ed. by Rosemary Crill and Kapil Jariwala, National Portrait Gallery, 2010 J. P. Losty, A new portrait miniature by Jivan Ram acquired , Asian and African studies blog, British Library website, 12th January 2014 A previously unrecorded and unpublished oil painting by the Indian artist Raja Jivan Ram, whose work, miniatures and oils, are rarely available on the open market. Oil paintings by Ram are almost exclusively held in public institutions, with small collections in the British Library, London, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Ram is recorded in contemporary literature by William Sleeman who described him as an excellent portrait-painter, and a very honest and agreeable person, [who] was lately employed to take the Emperor's portrait ( op. cit., vol. ii, pp. 285-7). A preliminary drawing is unfortunately all that remains of the portrait described by Sleeman, but the fact that the Mughal Emperor Akbar II (1806-37) commissioned his portrait to be painted by Ram highlights the regard that the artist had with the Indian, as well as the British, elite. [The drawing is now held in the British Library s India Office and Private Papers collection, ref.: Add.Or.3167] The high regard held for Ram by his contemporaries is further shown with his appointment in the 1830s by the famous Begum Samru of Sardhana (1745-1836), whose palace was decorated with some twenty of his oil paintings ( op. cit., Losty, Jan. 2014). The European influence on Indian portrait painting, which began in the 18th century, and was continued by artists travelling and working in India such as George Chinnery (1774-1852) and Thomas Hickey (1741-1824), is clearly apparent in the portrait of Lieutenant Jasper Trower. The most comparable portrait by Ram to the present work is that of Captain Robert McMullin, which is similarly dated 1827, and may well have been executed in close succession (currently held by the British Library, ref.: F863). The sitter, Lieutenant Jasper Trower (c.1807-1845) of the Bengal Horse Artillery, later a Captain in the 7th Light Field Battery, was killed in action during the Battle of Mudki, Punjab, 1845. We have been unable to find any record for an oil painting by Raja Jivan Ram available on the open market for the last 20 years.

[Bible, Medieval Manuscript on vellum] Italy, ca. 1350

Lot 5: [Bible, Medieval Manuscript on vellum] Italy, ca. 1350

by Bibliopathos

March 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Milano, Italy

Estimated Price: €1,500 - €2,000

Description: A MEDIEVAL FRAGMENT OF MACCABEES, ITALY ca. 1350Medieval fragment of Maccabees with commentary. [Italy, about 1350]. A fragment of a medieval Bible, containing the first book of Maccabees (chapther 2:42) with the commentary by Rabanus Maurus.Rabanus Maurus Magnentius (c. 780 - 856), also known as Hrabanus or Rhabanus, was a Frankish Benedictine monk, the archbishop of Mainz in Germany and a theologian. He was the author of the encyclopaedia De rerum naturis (On the Nature of Things). He also wrote treatises on education and grammar and commentaries on the Bible. He was one of the most prominent teachers and writers of the Carolingian age, and was called "Praeceptor Germaniae", or "the teacher of Germany". Rabanus' works, many of which remain unpublished, comprise Scriptural commentaries and various treatises relating to doctrinal and practical subjects, including more than one series of Homilies. In 2006, the 1150th anniversary of his death was celebrated in Germany, especially in Mainz and Fulda. One of the highlights of the celebrations was the display of Codex Vaticanus Reginensis latinus 124, an extremely rare loan by the Vatican to Mainz of a spectacular manuscript containing De laudibus sanctae crucis. The anniversary also saw the publication of no fewer than three book-length studies of Maurus and his work. References: The first nominally complete edition of the works of Hrabanus Maurus was that of Colvener (Cologne, 6 vols. fol., 1627). The Opera omnia form vols. cvii-cxii of Migne's Patrologiae cursus completus. The De universo is the subject of Compendium der Naturwissenschaften an der Schule zu Fulda im IX. Jahrhundert (Berlin, 1880).

Condition Report: A bit faded, but fascinating.

One of several early books and manuscripts from a collection of rare early Latin and Italian vellum books, including incunabula (1478) from the Borghese Palace library in Rome.Provenance: Prince Camillo Borghese, 6th Prince of Sulmona (1775-1832), married to Pauline Bonaparte in 1803. Remained in Borghese estate until 1892. Prince Paolo Borghese, 9th Prince of Sulmona (1845-1920) was forced to sell the contents of the Borghese Bibliotheque and Borghese Palace apartment, grounds and property to the state due to the financial crash of the Bank of Italy in 1891. The collection of manuscripts and several paintings being offering were purchased by Bradford deWolf at the renowned Borghese Bibliotheque and Palace sale in 1892.The collection was later inherited by Dorothy 'Doda' deWolf of Washington, DC. She was born Princess Dorota Drucka Lubecka, the daughter of Countess Hegwige Opersdorff and Prince Francis Xavier Drucki Lubecki, a member of one of the oldest princely families of Europe. When the family's ancestral estate in Baltow, Poland was occupied by the Nazis at the beginning of World War II and later taken by the Russians, they fled to Paris, and in 1952, emigrated to the United States. Princess Dorota, known simply as 'Doda,' found employment in Wisconsin as an au pair, and later moved to Washington, DC where she worked for Elizabeth Arden. She eventually embarked on a very successful, 30-year real estate career at Begg - now Long & Foster - winning numerous awards in her field, as well as remaining very active in Polish affairs, including spearheading a Polish Cultural Center in Washington. In 1960, Doda married Francis Colt deWolf, Jr., known as 'Colt,' and for 34 years, Doda and Colt deWolf were a prominent couple in Washington Society, known for their constant hospitality and infectious vitality. Colt was a direct descendent of Chris Colt, a wealthy textile industrialist whose brother, Sam Colt, invented the Colt 45 revolver. Chris Colt's grandson, Bradford deWolf, was a purchaser at the great sales of the contents of the Borghese Palace, which took place in Italy in the 1890s. The property that Bradford deWolf purchased from the Borghese Palace passed down to his son, Francis Colt deWolf, I, who came to Washington in 1922 to work for the State Department as one of the first heads of the newly created Communications Department. The deWolfs, with their impressive Borghese furniture, moved into the largest private residence in Georgetown, the Bodisco House. Colt and Doda deWolf inherited these historic objects.
