Lot 45159: [Manuscript]. Maurtius de Flisco [Maurizio di Fieschi].

by Heritage Auctions

April 8, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: [Manuscript]. Maurtius de Flisco [Maurizio di Fieschi]. De Fato Decas De Fato Annisque Fatalibus Tam Hominibus Quam Regnis Mundi. Late 17th Century-Early 18th Century Transcription of the 1665 Original Text. Folio. [2 blank], 338 [including 4 (=8 pages) blank leaves], [4 blank] pages. Written in brown ink in a fine legible cursive hand, roughly thirty-four lines per page. Drawing on title page in imitation of the emblematic device on the printed title page, large text geniture charts. Modern half blue morocco over lightly scratched marbled boards, spine sun faded, corners bumped, some slight rubbing; untrimmed with deckled edges, three leaves at the front are repaired and folded at the edge with some minor losses, some blue paper used, else in very good condition. Watermarks: Fleur-de-lis; "scrollwork F?S"; Crown and arms? We have been unable to find any of these to match our identification sources. This attractive manuscript is a transcription of the printed edition published by Schonwetter in 1665. Houzeau/Lancaster and Caillet both call the work "rare" and that must have been the reason that an early student transcribed the whole work. For the printed edition: Houzeau/Lancaster 5260. Caillet 4019. VD 17 23:2412805. Strap, Schonwetter 280 (Archiv fur Geschichte des Buchwesens I, 38.) Gardner, Astrologica, 411. From the Krown & Spellman Collection. John Updike. A Large Collection of Correspondence and T

Lot 45733: John Updike. A Large Collection of Correspondence and T

by Heritage Auctions

April 8, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: John Updike. A Large Collection of Correspondence and Typescript Drafts. [Various places: various dates. A large and varied collection of correspondence, consisting of: eleven typed letters (or notes) signed (large quarto and octavo leaves), three typed postcards signed, a signed contract (for an appearance of his short story, The Doctor's Wife, in Prize Stories 1962: The O. Henry Awards, published by Doubleday & Company), five drafts of typescript (carbon copy?) or photocopy drafts of articles, three of which have manuscript notes or comments by Updike, and a signed black and white photograph of Updike at a signing at Gotham Book Mart in 2004 (from pencil text on verso). The subjects range from letters to editors or publishers about the publication of his works (making corrections and additions), questions about payments, or letters to book collectors. Along with this impressive collection is an unusual item: an original ink drawing of Santa Claus by Updike (signed "John & Mary Updike") on a sleeve apparently used to house a Christmas keepsake of some kind (the sleeve has "season's greetings from" printed on one side). There is some toning and minor edgewear to letters or drafts, a few have minor creases, the drawing of Santa Claus and the signature on the sleeve is blurry. Still, an excellent collection. From the collection of I.D. "Nash" Flores III.

by Waddington's

April 13, 2015, 7:00 PM EST

Toronto, ON, Canada

Estimated Price: CAD2,000 - CAD3,000

Description: BALINT ZSAKO UNTITLED both watercolour and ink on paperthe first: signed and dated "2008 OCTOBER"; the second: signed and dated "2008 MAY" both 16 ins x 12 ins; 40.6 cms x 30.5 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoNote:Balint Zsako was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1979, and received his BFA from Ryerson University (Toronto) in 2002. He is best known for his drawings and collages which use watercolor and ink on paper to depict a multitude of characters and experiences encompassing themes such as family, mythology, sex, bodily functions, and primitive desires. His work is recognized for the thick black outlines which encase "shocks of colour". Zsako's art has also been likened to illuminated manuscripts, as the delicate lines are combined with very simple, archetypal themes. However, it takes the viewer a moment to recognize that this traditional method of drawing with ink on paper is coupled with notions of innocence, perversity, and sometimes even cruelty. Bodies twist in unusual positions, and interactions between subjects are unusually sexual and savage. This adds an element of the surreal and the bizarre; setting his work apart from the historical and into the contemporary moment.Zsako has experienced a large amount of success in the 2000s, and has moved his practice to New York where he continues to create his sinister and quirky drawings.

Russell (including an original photo of Russell taken October 17, 1926 just days before he died on October 24, 1926) and his home and studio in Great Falls, Montana. California collector Bill Burger acquired this collection, along with severe other pieces of original Russell art many years ago. Jesse Lincoln Mitchell, was called a sensitive sculptor and artist in "From Montana, The Magazine Of Western History", (Winter, 1960), when she shared her personal memories of a warm and helpful friendship with "The Greatest Of Them All" in the publication of "C. M. Russell, The White Indian"?a book written from her original manuscript. That manuscript is also included in this collection. It is a fabulous 17-page writing titled, "Russell The White Indian" by Jesse Lincoln Mitchell written in Great Falls, Montana where she and her family moved in 1912. They lived next door to Russell. She tells many antidotes about Russell and talks about watching him paint. She writes: "There have been many notable Characters in my life, but none so unique and unforgettable as the White Indian." Another manuscript by Jesse Bromley Lincoln, titled: "A Garden by the River Blows" is included. It is written about her time in when she first moved to the "Wild West" of Mohave. George Wharton James (1858_1923) was a friend and constant visitor to the family. He was a prolific popular lecturer, photographer and journalist, writing more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American Southwest. Another friend and visitor was John Peabody Harrington (1884_1961) who was an American linguist and ethnologist and a specialist in the native peoples of California. this writing ends with her husband falling ill with typhoid fever and the river flooding them from their home. One more writing speaks about Jesse's trip (1932) to the Blackfeet Reservation to meet General Hugh L. Scott and attend Blackfeet ceremonials. Hugh Lenox Scott (1853_1934) was a post-Civil War West Point graduate who served as superintendent of West Point from 1906 to 1910, and Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1914 to 1917, including the first few months of American involvement in World War I. He was assigned to the quarters only recently vacated by the widow of George Armstrong Custer. In fact, Scott was sent out to the Little Big Horn battle site to mark gravesites for Custer's men killed in the battle. He also had the opportunity to interview many of the Native Americans who fought on both sides of the battle on June 25, 1876. City: Great Falls State: Montana, Circa: c.1900's

The archive comprising approximately twenty-five autograph letters in Spanish from Kahlo to Bartoli ranging from 2 to 12 pages in length, variously written in colored inks and in pencil, many on a very thin paper, with various enclosures including an original drawing of a sleeping cat, pressed flowers, pieces of ribbon, beads, a few enclosed with drafts of letters in Bartoli's hand with numerous cross-outs, edits and one drawing, each letter with its original or early envelope, most stamped and postmarked. Also included are a fine group of vintage photographs and color slides depicting Kahlo (several by Nickolas Muray) including one with an important inscription by Kahlo relating to her 1946 painting Tree of Hope. Finally, a 1958 letter from Ella Wolf to Bartoli is also present which encloses several photographs of Bartoli. [Mushroom - Photography]. C. G. Lloyd. Photogravure's o

Lot 45234: [Mushroom - Photography]. C. G. Lloyd. Photogravure's o

by Heritage Auctions

April 8, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: [Mushroom - Photography]. C. G. Lloyd. Photogravure's of American Fungi. Issued by C. G. Lloyd. Cincinnati, Ohio: C. G. Lloyd, [n.d., ca. 1890's]. Presentation of this collection of photogravures, evidently issued over time. Oblong quarto. Approximately 9 x 11 inches. Twenty nine photogravures of various fungi, most with printed text, most numbered in sequence (final three plates with manuscript ink notations and are not numbered). Nearly all with plain tissue guard. Disbound (originally string-bound, but string is broken) in contemporary plain wrappers, front wrapper stating the title and origin as well as: "With the Compliments of Mr C. G. Lloyd/May 12, 1905/to/E. P. Sterling/[other text is lost due to damage to front wrapper]"in manuscript. Rear wrapper has no text. Two leaves with manuscript contents at front. This manuscript material is in black ink and underlined in red. Each photogravure has penciled note at bottom, mainly stating whether the fungi in question is edible or not. Wrappers and all tissue guards and photogravures have two binding holes at the left margin. Wrappers worn and chipped, front wrapper and manuscripts contents leaves soiled, photogravures toned, with some light occasional edgewear. Still, a very good example of this rare, apparently self-published collection. It is unclear if this collection is complete, but the University of Wisconsin at Madison has a collection with twenty six numbered photogravures, six unnumbered photogravures and three numbered photographic prints, meaning that the collection currently at auction is nearly complete, lacking only three photogravure prints (it is unclear if the photographic prints mentioned were issued contemporaneously with this collection). No other collection has been offered at auction, as best as we can tell.

Travel Log of the Clipper Surprise: Two Journals with D

Lot 49010: Travel Log of the Clipper Surprise: Two Journals with D

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: Travel Log of the Clipper Surprise: Two Journals with Drawings of Chinese Subjects. The journal contains daily entries dated April 7, 1854, through March 4, 1855, and kept by First Officer Henry H. Shufeldt. Shufeldt's entries document the "Clipper ship Surprise" as it shuttles from New York to San Francisco and San Francisco to Shanghai. Included are four hand-colored drawings of Chinese subjects are very colorful and well-drawn: two women dated March 1856; "A Silk Merchant" showing two men; one wealthy male; one wealthy female. All measure 6.5" x 9". Some bear some soiling and irregular toning. Also included is a sketch (9.5" x 6") of the clipper under sail. The journal consists of two volumes in manuscript. In the top margin of most pages of both volumes is some version of "Log of the Clipper ship Surprise Bound for New York towards San Francisco Chas. A. Roulett Commander." Under the heading are five columns: "Hours," "K. F.," "Course," "Winds," and "Remarks [with date]." Both volumes bear some wear and moderate soiling. Volume one measures "9.75" x 7.25" with boards. Written on a front endpaper, "Voyage around the world." Scattered throughout are sketches, some entitled "The South Farallon Bearing NE 23 Miles from San Francisco" (featuring a sketch of the vessel); a "Mandariness"; a "Chinese junk / Yang-tse Kiang River"; and others featuring Chinese individuals, such as those at a school. Volume two measures 8.25" x 6.75" and continues where volume one leaves off. Near the middle of the volume, Shufeldt writes several pages "Containing a few Short Rules in Seamanship and Navigation." These include instructions on "Trimming Sails," "Tacking Ship," "A Short Rule for Tracking Ships Longitude," "Rigging a Ship," and more. Built in 1850 in Boston, the sturdy Surprise soon began working the China trade on the Pacific Ocean, while maintaining its Atlantic trade. The vessel became known for her fast trips from New York to San Francisco and then on to Shanghai. The ship had a relatively long life of service, lasting from 1850-1867. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
