Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer

Lot 1307: Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $2,000

Description: Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer This unique pistol is pictured on page 129 of THE DERINGER IN AMERICA VOLUME II by R.L. Wilson and L.D. Eberhart. The caption reads: " Prototype Second Model National. Serial no. 10, marked on the brass frame beneath rosewood grip. In an unfinished state, and believed employed to demonstrate the experimental lever blade ejector. The system works admirably but was never introduced to production. Collection of Bob Vanni, Bay State Arms. Co." The serial number in the caption must be an typographical error given that "11" is clearly stamped under the left grip panel, and the mill lines and other imperfections match the pistol pictured. It has a German silver half moon blade front sight, hammer groove rear sight, and no markings aside from the "11" on the frame and "X73" on the underside of the grips. The National Arms Company derringers were the predecessors of the Colt cartridge derringers produced after Colt purchased The National Arms Company in 1870. Manufacturer: National Arms Co Model: Derringer BBL: 2 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 41 RF Finish: white Grips: rosewood Serial Number: 11 Class: Antique Condition: Good. This prototype has milling marks throughout with some brown patina forming in the recesses on the barrel and an aged patina on the frame which has some pitting on the back strap. The ill-fitting grips are fine with some edge and generally handling wear. The action is fine. Overall, an interesting link in the history of 19th century derringer cartridge pistols.

Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories

Lot 1594: Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $60,000 - $90,000

Description: Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun manufactured in 1921. Colt Firearms manufactured 15,000 Thompson Submachine Guns for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in 1921. All 15,000 Colt/AO Thompson Submachine Guns were originally designated Model 1921. The Model 1921 Thompson Submachineguns had a 800 round per minute rate of fire and were not fitted with Cutts compensators. Between 1926 and 1928, the Marine Corps obtained a few Model 1921 Thompsons. Based on combat experience in Nicaragua and China, the Marines recommended reduction of the rate of fire. In response to the Marine critique of the Model 1921, Auto-Ordnance modified the bolt, recoil spring and pilot rod to reduce the rate of fire to around 600 rounds per minute and added a Cutts compensator to the muzzle to reduce barrel climb during automatic fire. In 1928, Auto-Ordnance designated modified guns as "Model 1928". The modified Thompsons had "U.S. NAVY" stamped above the "MODEL OF 1921" marking on the left side of the receiver and "8" hand-stamped over the "1" in "1921". Although the guns were marked "U.S. NAVY", most Model 1928 Thompsons were sold to law enforcement. This gun has the larger, second style, Cutts compensator with Cutts trademarks and patent markings on the top. The gun has the 1928 internal components which include: (1) a 1928 second style blued weighted actuator, (2) long one piece pilot rod. (3) small diameter recoil spring and (4) red fiber recoil buffer. The bronze Blish lock is correctly not stamped with sub-contract marks. The bolt is bright and has a "C" stamped on the inside. The gun has the original finned barrel and folding leaf rear sight marked: "MADE BY 'LYMAN' MIDDLEFIELD, CONN. U.S.A." on the base. The internal components on the trigger frame and stock are finished bright. The front of the detachable stock is stamped with the small anchor symbol used by the stock-maker Remington Arms. The forearm and pistol grip are original Colt/AO components. The ejector, magazine release, firing lever and safety are all the early Colt/AO components. The left side of the trigger frame has the second style "FULL/AUTO", "SINGLE" and "FIRE-SAFE" markings found on most Colt/AO Model 1928 guns. In addition to the model markings and the serial number "NO 12666", the left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBRE .45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE/MANUFACTURED BY/COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CONN., U.S.A." in five lines below the rear sight. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION./NEW YORK. U.S.A." in two lines followed by the six-line block of patent dates. An encircled "JHB" monogram utilized by Auto-Ordnance inspector John Barrett is lightly stamped ahead of the patent marking. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped with the distinctive Thompson "Bullet" trademark. The bottom of the trigger frame is stamped with the serial number "NO 12666". The trigger frame and receiver serial numbers match. Included with this Thompson are: (1) a 50 round "L" WWII Auto-Ordnance drum magazine, (2) two early Colt/AO 20-round magazines with two-line 1920 and 1921 patent dates and (3) a nickel-plated oiler. The gun has a BATF Form 4 and is a registered Class III weapon. Check for legality in your location. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1928 thompson BBL: 12 1/2 Inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 45 ACP Finish: Blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 12666 Class: Class III Condition: Excellent plus. The gun has all of the original Model 1928 components and retains 99% of the bright original Colt commercial blue finish. Finish wear is limited to the buttplate which shows some thinning to the blue finish on the edges and heel. The markings are perfect. The bore is mirror bright. The forearm, pistol grip and stock are in nearly new condition; all of the original oil finish remains and there is almost no handling or storage wear. Nearly all of the surviving Colt/AO Model 1928 Thompson Submachine Guns were used by law enforcement agencies and typically show years of handling and storage wear. This Model 1928 Navy is in almost new condition and is one of the best example extant. The Colt/AO Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun is a historic and extremely desirable firearm. Used by the Marine Corps in China and the "Banana Wars" in Central America and by the FBI and law enforcement during the Great Depression, the Model 1928 was the most popular and best known variation of the Thompson Submachine Gun. The high quality, commercial blue Colt finish is stunning. This is the finest example of a Model 1928 Navy Thompson Submachine Gun that we have ever offered at auction and would be the centerpiece of any firearms collection. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), Fully Automatic Weapon that is currently registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATF&E) that has been classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories

Lot 1589: Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $65,000 - $95,000

Description: Exceptional Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun with Accessories Colt/Auto-Ordnance Model 1921 AC Thompson Submachine Gun. Colt manufactured 15,000 Thompson Submachine Guns for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in 1921. The original Model 1921 design featured a finned barrel with no compensator, pistol grip forearm and had a rate of fire of approximately 800 rounds per minute. All of the Colt Thompsons had the Colt high polish commercial blue finish, were fitted with Lyman folding adjustable leaf sights and had straight grain, oil-finished, American walnut stocks, pistol grips and forearms. In 1926, Auto-Ordnance fitted a Cutts compensator to the Model 1921 Thompson Submachine Guns and designated the modified guns "Model 1921 AC". The Model 1921 AC had the same internal components and external markings as the Model 1921 and retained the 800 round per minute rate of fire. This gun has the early, small, unmarked, Cutts compensator fitted to most Model 1921 AC Thompsons. The gun has the early style 1921 blued actuator with bronze Blish lock and bright finished bolt. The bolt and Blish lock correctly have no sub-contractor markings. The gun also has the early, 1921, two-piece buffer and buffer pilot with large diameter recoil spring. The gun has all the original Colt/AO components with bright internal components in the frame and bright stock latch. The ejector, magazine latch, safety and fire control lever are all original Model 1921 Colt/AO components. The front of the stock is stamped with the tiny anchor mark that denotes the Remington Arms made stock used on the original Colt/AC Thompsons. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped "MODEL OF 1921./NO 3259" in two lines. "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN,/CALIBRE .45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE/MANUFACTURED BY/COLT PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG.CO/HARTFORD, CONN.,U.S.A." is roll-stamped in five lines on the left side of the receiver below the rear sight. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION,/NEW YORK. U.S.A." in two lines below the rear sight followed by nine patent dates in five lines and the encircled "JHB" monogram of Auto-Ordnance inspector John H. Barrett found on many Colt/AO Model 1921 and Model 1928 Submachine Guns. The Auto-Ordnance bullet trademark is roll-stamped on the top of the receiver ahead of the rear sight. The rear sight base is marked: "MADE BY "LYMAN", MIDDLEFIELD. CONN, U.S.A.". The left side of the frame has the second style "FIRE - SAFE" Markings connected by and arrow with "FULL/AUTO" roll-stamped ahead of the fire selector in two lines and "SINGLE" below an arrow stamped behind it. The bottom of the frame is roll-stamped: "NO. 3259". The frame and receiver numbers match. Also included with the gun are: (1) an early Auto-Ordnance 50-round "L" drum magazine with Auto-Ordnance markings on the drum body and cover and 1920 patent dates on the body, (2) two early, blued, 20-round magazines marked "PATENTED - AUG.24,1920/AUG.24, 1920-JAN.11, 1921" in two lines on the front of the magazine, and (3) nickel-plated oiler. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1921 Thompson BBL: 12 1/2 Inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 45 ACP Finish: Blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 3259 Class: Class III Condition: Excellent plus. The gun has all of the original Model 1921 AC components and retains 99% of the original Colt commercial blue finish. The only significant finish wear is on the buttplate which has some finish loss at the heel and thin finish on the plate itself. The markings are perfect. The bore is mirror bright. The stock, pistol grip and forearm are in excellent plus condition; all of the original oil finish remains and wear is limited to a few minor handling marks. The 50-round "L" drum is in excellent condition with 98% of the dark phosphate finish and no dents or scratches. Both of the scarce early 20-round magazines are in excellent condition and retain 98% or more of the original high polish blue finish. The oiler is in excellent condition. The scarce early manual has taped repairs on the spine and tears in the edges of the cover. The Colt/Auto-Ordnance Thompson Submachine Gun is one of the iconic American firearms. Few firearms are more identifiable or historic than the Thompson Submachine Gun. Forever associated with "G-Men" and gangsters during the "Roaring Twenties" and the Great Depression, the Model 1921AC Thompson Submachine Gun is one of the most historic and desirable of all American firearms. The high quality, pre-war Colt finish on this gun is stunning. This is the finest example that we have offered of a 1921AC and is the most desirable of all variations of the Thompson Submachine Gun with period accessories in condition that cannot be improved upon.
