Martially mkd. Pre-Civil War Colt 1851 Navy

Lot 41: Martially mkd. Pre-Civil War Colt 1851 Navy

by Carol Watson's Orange Coast Auctions

November 22, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Irvine, CA, USA

Description: Interesting Martially marked Pre-Civil War Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, with holster, #85575, .36 cal., 7-1/2'' octagonal barrel, arsenal blue finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, with one-piece walnut grips. Triggerguard marked ''U.S.'', butt marked ''V.V.G.'', as well as the number ''3'', which is also found on the cylinder adjacent to the serial number. Similar 1860 Armies have been observed with markings such as this and are consistent with sidearms issued to black soldiers during the Civil War. Condition is very good as arsenal refinished, with part of the barrel address removed; approx. 60% finish remains. Oil finished grips with light general knackering, the interior of which have been re-glued. Forward triggerguard screw does not snug tightly; wedge is a more recent replacement, but all other visible serial numbers match. Action turns intermittently, bore is fair. Interesting period military holster, although unmarked, was probably mfg'd by Watervliet Arsenal, showing light to moderate general crazing but good stitching and no plug. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)

Irvine, CA, USA

Description: Early Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, #75199, .36 cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, originally with blue and case hardened finish, silver-plated brass backstrap and triggerguard, with one-piece walnut grips. Originally shipped approx. 1857, and according to Mason Swayze on page 46 of his book, entitled '''51 Colt Navies'', he calls all firearms in this serial number range as ''Navy Armies'', as they were shipped to the U.S. Army. Revolver additionally shows small military acceptance marks throughout, including the letter ''T'' to the left lower portion of barrel lug, small letter ''g'' to rear left triggerguard bow. This revolver was in the possession of Brevet Col. William Betts Keeler of Muscatine, IA, in the 35th Iowa Vol. Infantry during his extensive service in the U.S. Civil War. Included with this revolver is an 1863 document commissioning Keeler as a Capt. in the Iowa 35th Regiment. (Colt shows no factory records for Navies below serial number 98,000.) Revolver remains in very good condition as well used and cleaned, showing only blue in protected areas of barrel and cylinder. Faint traces of what was originally thin case colors remain on frame. Surprisingly a good amount of silver is retained on backstrap and in protected areas of triggerguard. One-piece walnut grips retain 80% original varnish, with losses to varnish near butt and knackering at butt cap of both grip and buttstrap. All matching serial numbers, including wedge. Action is good, bore is very good. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)

It was founded by William Philip Molyneux, 2nd Earl of Sefton and so-called as it was inaugurated by Mr William Lynn, proprietor of the Waterloo Hotel in Liverpool's Ranelagh Street. Mr Lynn, encouraged by the response to the inaugural event, turned his attention the following year to the Turf and organised the first running of the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, known as the Grand National since 1839. The Waterloo Cup was the premier annual hare coursing event and would attract many thousands of spectators to watch and gamble on the coursing matches. It was often referred to by its supporters as the blue ribbon event of the coursing year. The eventual winner would receive a small trophy and stake money. It is understood that the winner's trophy was discontinued in 1921, with subsequent winners receiving a medal.
