Description: Highly Ornate Side by Side Flintlock Shotgun with Relief Carved Stock This non maker marked double barrel flintlock shotgun has detailed engraving and relief designs including: scroll and geometric designs on the barrels, upper tang, and locks; faces on each barrel near the breech, relief chiseled knight themes on the buttplate and trigger guard, and a relief carved beast (possibly a lion) with inlayed glass eyes on the bottom of the straight wrist stock which also has checkering and pin inlays on the wrist and forend and additional carved accents. The bottom of the barrels have several Liege proofs including "star/N" and "star/X" inspector marks suggesting late 19th century manufacture. The barrels have a single bead sight a couple of inches rear of the muzzle. Brass Barreled Flintlock Pistol

Lot 1197: Brass Barreled Flintlock Pistol

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $900 - $1,400

Description: Brass Barreled Flintlock Pistol This is marked "London" in script and has two English style but likely spurious proofs on the upper left flat. It was not uncommon for foreign manufacturers in countries such as Belgium to attempt to pass their firearms off as having been made in the much more renowned gunsmiths in London. It has a slender lock with small flash pan, engraving or relief designs on many of the components including the pineapple trigger guard finial, and is fitted on a walnut stock with checkered grip, initial shield, and carved designs near the upper tang. Oddly, it has a rear sight but no front blade or post. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Flintlock Pistol BBL: 8 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 Finish: bright/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The barrel displays an attractive aged patina. The lock and most of the other components have a dark patina while the trigger guard has more recently done case coloring. The stock is also very good with crisp checkering, some chips, scrapes, and small holes. The action needs some attention as it will not hold full cock.

Elaborate Gold and Pearl Inlaid Afghani Style Flintlock Jezail Rifle with Sling and Powder Horn

Lot 169: Elaborate Gold and Pearl Inlaid Afghani Style Flintlock Jezail Rifle with Sling and Powder Horn

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,100 - $1,600

Description: Elaborate Gold and Pearl Inlaid Afghani Style Flintlock Jezail Rifle with Sling and Powder Horn The Jezail, particularly rifled examples such as this, are said to have been effective at up to 500 yards compared to only 150 yards for the British Brown Bess and were thus used to devastating effect in the Anglo-Afghan Wars. This example has a Damascus pattern barrel with some golden floral designs at the muzzle and breech ends. It has post and notch sights and the four iron barrel bands have relief floral designs. The single brass band has a lotus design while the trigger guard has complimentary engraved designs. This Jezail was built using an 1817 dated British East India Company lock with the lion motif over three unclear letters just ahead of the cock and a "crown/2" stamp below the removable flash pan. The nearly full length stock has shell/mother of pearl inlays along the length of the butt end along with some wire inlay and other accents. The stock also has sling swivels with a sling attached. An iron ramrod and antique powder horn with leather strap are included. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Flintlock Rifle BBL: 35 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 Finish: gold/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The rifle retains more than 70% of the gold embellishment and displays the distinctive patterns of the Damascus/pattern welded barrel along its length. The lock has some pitting and a gray-brown patina. The stock is fair with a section absent where the butt piece is attached and some of the inlays broken or absent. Mechanically fine with attractive designs and markings throughout. The leather sling and powder horn are fair with the sling broken.

American Long Rifle Style Flintlock Fowler

Lot 102: American Long Rifle Style Flintlock Fowler

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: American Long Rifle Style Flintlock Fowler This flintlock fowling piece heavily resembles the designs of the early American/Pennsylvania/Kentucky long rifle with its extra long barrel, maple full stock with brass furniture, and rifle style blade front and notch rear sights. Its simple design and elegant goose-neck hammer suggest pre-Revolutionary manufacture and it may have been made by a gunsmith in Pennsylvania alongside early American long rifles. It is unmarked as is common for American firearms produced in that period. The stock has some nicely carved designs on the upper wrist. The long smoothbore barrel and overall lightweight design would have made this fowling piece easy to carry in the field and accurate for hunting fowl with bird shot, larger game with buck shot, and as a weapon for self defense and militia use with a single musket type ball or "buck and ball" load. Many unassuming privately owned firearms were utilized in 18th century warfare by the under equipped American militias including during the American Revolution. It includes a wooden ramrod. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Fowling Piece BBL: 50 3/4 inch part octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 62 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have a mixture of faded original finish and patina with some minor pitting. The brass furniture has an attractive aged patina. There are some scattered scratches on the metal surfaces. The restored wood is fine with some pins, chips, and slivers absent, a few minor scratches and dings, and a handsome tiger stripe pattern. The action needs some attention. Overall a fine example of an early American firearm that may have seen use in colonial wars or the American Revolution and that was certainly a prized possession that put food on the table for the original owner.

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss The only visible marking on this blunderbuss is a "crown/JAP" proof just behind the removable iron flash pan. A second mark that appears similar to a Liege proof is found on the left side of the barrel but is obscured by the pinned walnut stock which has a multi-point checkering at the wrist and forend and a short butt with a brass buttplate. The stock style is somewhat similar to the Turkish dag blunderbuss variant, but the overall style of this example suggests European manufacture possibly for the Middle Eastern trade. It includes an iron ramrod with brass tip. The cock has some light engraved designs. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Blunderbus BBL: 16 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 1 3/4 Inch Finish: bright/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as fitted with a replacement hammer and retention screw. The brass barrel and fittings have an attractive aged patina with some minor scrapes and small vice marks. The lock has a mixed brown patina with some pitting. The trigger guard has a small crack and is pulling way from the stock at the front. The stock is fine with crisp checkering, light scratches and pressure marks and some small chips. Mechanically fine.

W.C. Biddle & Co. Marked Kentucky Style Percussion Buck and Ball Long Rifle

Lot 136: W.C. Biddle & Co. Marked Kentucky Style Percussion Buck and Ball Long Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,600 - $2,500

Description: W.C. Biddle & Co. Marked Kentucky Style Percussion Buck and Ball Long Rifle This Flintlock Buck and Ball piece heavily resembles the designs of the early American/Pennsylvania/Kentucky long rifle with its extra long barrel, maple full stock with brass furniture, and rifle style blade front and notch rear sights. The stock has some nicely carved lines and a small cheek rest. The long smoothbore barrel and overall lightweight design would have made this fowling piece easy to carry in the field and accurate for hunting fowl with bird shot and larger game with buck shot. Brothers Robert Biddle and William Canby Biddle founded "R. & W. C. Biddle" in Philadelphia around 1837. They changed the name to Biddle Hardware Company after the Civil War. They imported and sold an array of foreign and domestic hardware, cutlery, and guns and also produced gun locks from 1847 to 1861. This fowling piece was thus likely produced by a local craftsman in the mid-19th century using a lock purchased from Biddle & Co. who either imported the lock and stamped it with their mark or produced it themselves. A wooden ramrod is included. Manufacturer: Unknown Model: Fowling Piece BBL: 45 3/4 inch part octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 63 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good. The barrel retains a mixture of thinned brown finish and a brown patina with some corrosion at the breech. The lock has a mottle brown patina. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is very good with attractive tiger stripe patterns, some small nicks and chips, a slight crack on the left flat at the breech, some edge wear, and minor pressure marks. The action is very good, but the nipple is battered.

Ten years later he branched out into furniture with his "Easy Edges" collection made of corrugated cardboard as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to traditional furniture. Gehry is quoted in Marilyn Hoffmann's 'Liberated Design' in The Christian Science Monitor on April 19, 1972 as explaining: "One day I saw a pile of corrugated cardboard outside of my office – the material which I prefer for building architecture models – and I began to play with it, to glue it together and to cut it into shapes with a hand saw and a pocket knife.' Gehry eventually stopped producing the "Easy Edges" pieces to focus on his architecture work but a number of the designs were later reissued by Vitra - h:23.50 w:42 d:21.50 in. Attractive Flintlock Pennsylvania Smoothbore Long Gun Attributed to Leonard Reedy

Lot 101: Attractive Flintlock Pennsylvania Smoothbore Long Gun Attributed to Leonard Reedy

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Attractive Flintlock Pennsylvania Smoothbore Long Gun Attributed to Leonard Reedy This smoothbore was made in the classic Kentucky or Pennsylvania rifle style and is attributed to Leonard Reedy of Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania. According to the Kentucky Rifle Foundation, Reedy is known to have rarely signed his work. The foundation also notes that he only produced 13 "guns" (assumed to be smoothbore) and a total of 47 firearms. The carved stock, patch box design, and German silver initial shield on the wrist and eight point star on the cheek piece are all fairly similar in design to other Reedy and Berks/Womelsdorf School rifles. It has a "JAS. GOLCHER/WARRANTED" (partially obscured) marked lock with light designs. It was common for many 19th century craftsmen to utilize locks manufactured by other companies, and the name often more meaningful on old muzzle loaders is that stamped or engraved on the barrel. The octagon barrel has blade front and notch rear sights and is pinned on the full length stock which has brass and German silver furniture including a nicely engraved brass patch box and displays incised designs including scroll work on the left side of the butt and fine lines along the forend. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 43 3/4 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 45 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good as re-converted. The barrel and lock have a brown patina with some patches of oxidation/pitting and spots of brown varnish. The brass furniture has an attractive aged patina with some spotting as does the German silver star and initial shield. The stock is fine with some repaired cracks and chips, a few light scratches, and otherwise mostly smooth surfaces with attractive designs. The end of the cleaning rod is broken off. The action is fine. This is an attractive example of the first of the iconic American firearms designs.
