Original Oil Still Life- Bottle & Pears #1

Lot 307: Original Oil Still Life- Bottle & Pears #1

by Nova Art Auctions

March 29, 2015, 8:30 PM PST

Vista, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $4,500

Description: 1 of 1-A Little bit of blue by Hugo Zavaleta- Original Oil on Canvas. Master of Modern Still Life. Measurements Approx. 27 X 47. Includes Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.

Condition Report: Excellent Condition. Hugo Zavaleta is a modern day master of still life paintings. Hugo began his career as an artist in the most peculiar manner, after graduating with a bachelor degree in sociology he realized that his true passion was always art and so decided to embark on his journey to realize his artistic aspirations. Hugo's admiration of Spanish painter Luis Melendez led him to specialize in still life themes. Hugo's developed his own style which is completely modern in composition as was that of Luis Melendez in his own time over two hundred and fifty years ago. Hugo's subjects are elevated yet mundane with a unique twist. Hugo Zavaleta's works are indeed contemporary masterpieces classically elegant in any setting.

by Adam's

April 1, 2015, 6:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €3,000 - €5,000

Description: George Bernard O'Neill (1828-1917) Don't Wake the Dolls Oil on canvas, 52.5 x 39cm (20.5 x 15.25'') Signed and dates 1865 O'Neill was born in Dublin but left for England in 1837, and was accepted at the Royal Academy Schools in 1845. A successful student, he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1847 onwards, and gained a reputation as a painter of charming narrative scenes. He was a member of the Cranbrook Colony, a group of artists who settled in Cranbrook, Kent from 1854 onwards and were inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painters. They have been referred to as 'genre' painters as they tended to paint scenes of everyday life that they saw around them, typically scenes of domestic life; cooking and washing, children playing and other family activities. The popularity of these scenes led to success for the artist in the 1850s-1870s, when his works were eagerly collected by entrepreneurs and industrialists of the area. The artist expressed his pleasure at this recognition by the public in his painting 'Public Opinion', which was shown at the Royal Academy in 1863 (at present at the Leeds City Art Gallery).

Robert Indiana Art Print Self Portrait 69 Skid Row

April 9, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Northbrook, IL, USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This self portrait contains the great, bolg geometric shapes the artist is known for. Artist: Robert Indiana Title: Self Portrait 69 Skid RowMedium: Lithograph on paperSheet size: 10 1/2 x 14 1/8 inchesCondition: ExcellentBiography:Robert Indiana (1928- ) was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, and he later took the "nom de brush" of his home state. He studied at art schools in Indianapolis and Utica, the Chicago School of the Art Institute and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. In 1953 and 1954 he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, afterwards settling in New York, hanging out with art stars Ellsworth Kelly and Jack Youngerman. Indiana's 1973 "Love" stamp was probably the most widely distributed Pop image ever (300 million were issued - the artist was paid $1,000 for his work), but his subject matter is drawn from decidedly UN-Pop American literature and poetry. Best known for sign-like paintings and sculpture, Indiana has also done figurative painting, written poetry, produced opera and collaborated on the film "EAT" with Andy Warhol. His work is held in every major collection of contemporary art, including: Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, The Netherlands; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan; Allentown Museum of Art, Pennsylvania; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Brandeis Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, Buffalo, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, Delaware; Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, Germany; Los Angeles County Museum, California; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California."(Indiana) has influenced a younger generation of ''word'' artists like Jenny Holzer, Christopher Wool and Barbara Kruger, and at its best it has a jumpy vitality that registers the beat of American life," wrote Grace Glueck in her 1999 review of the artist's retrospective at the Portland Museum of Art, ''Love and the American Dream: The Art of Robert Indiana.'' And the beat goes on - this image has lots of staying power and freshness and may be the perfect addition to your collection of 20th century prints.

SARGENT JOHNSON (1888 - 1967) Untitled (Head of an Athlete).

Lot 32: SARGENT JOHNSON (1888 - 1967) Untitled (Head of an Athlete).

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 2, 2015, 2:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $40,000

Description: SARGENT JOHNSON (1888 - 1967) Untitled (Head of an Athlete). Painted plaster, circa 1942. Approximately 584x533x51 mm; 23x21x2 inches. Provenance: private collection, New York. This plaster bas-relief head by Sargent Johnson is a very scarce and exciting find - it is the only known surving plaster model from his 1942 frieze at George Washington High School. This monumental frieze, 12-feet high and 185-feet wide, was made in cast stone in 6x14 feet sections, and is easily the largest work by the artist. It spanned a retaining wall across the back of the high school football field, located at 32nd Street and Anza in San Francisco. This enormous neo-classical design depicts swimming, diving, rowing and leaping male and female athletes - each figure is larger than life size. Johnson was awarded the job by the WPA and subsequently approved by the San Francisco Art Commission in 1940. He replaced the commission's original choice of his long mentor Beniamino Bufano. A political and contentious selection process and the eventual choice of Johnson over Bufano ended their long friendship. The 1941 maquette Johnson used to win his eventual selection is in the collection of the George Washington High School. This concrete maquette and a large drawing study in the collection of the Oakland Museum of California were both included in the 1998 exhibition Sargent Johnson: African-American Modernist at the San Francisco Museum of Art. Montgomery pp. 22-23; LeFalle-Collins/Wright pp. 82-83.

Markus Pierson 'COYOTE PORTRAIT OF VAN GOGH' Canvas

by Universal Live Auctions

April 9, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Coyote Portrait of Van GoghMedium: Canvas SerigraphOrientation: verticalImage Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesEdition Size: 175: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Excerpts from his book, But I Digress, A Coyote's View of Art History VINCENT VAN GOGH Ahhhh, Vincent . . . You know, I should just stop right there, let the work do the talking, something I'm sure Vincent would have much preferred. He once said that he loved the notion that paintings don't need words, that they stand on their own merits. Modern art critics get real prickly when they hear stuff like that. After all, they have limos to pay for and suites at the Chateau Marmont to rent - just like any other Joe. Why, if not for them, people might think my work is good and Jackson Pollock is a hack, and we can't have that. Many misconceptions about Vincent persist, despite the ungodly amount of literature generated about him and the voluminous stack of letters about his paintings he sent to his dear brother, Theo. Theo is responsible for much of Vincent's perseverance, much the way my brother, Pat, is responsible for mine. He liked my work when few did. What a gem of a guy. But I digress. Let's keep it simple. Vincent was Dutch, born in 1853, his complexion as pasty as mine pre-bologna sandwich (see Botticelli) and it stayed that way. More sensitive than a nitro-burning seismograph made of Balsa wood and feathers, Vincent made his way through his childhood like a naked shepherd at a porcupine farm - very cautiously. Uncertain about himself in every way and yet somehow arrogant, Vincent got a job at an art dealer's place, where he eventually pissed off everyone and they booted him. He then gave in to the call of the Lord and became a preacher. He went to minister to the most wretched, destitute folks he could find, but like a tennis player playing lesser talent, soon he found himself as wretched as they. He got booted from the Lord's work, too. In 1880 Vincent Van Gogh decided to become an artist, and until his death in 1890 at age thirty-seven, he created the most compelling, brilliant, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping body of work ever. He was utterly driven to paint, sometimes completing two canvases in a single day. Masterpieces. Holy mackerel. His life continued to be traumatic, however - he fell in love with his cousin, but was scorned, intimately involved himself with various brothel types, got in a nasty scrape with Gauguin one night and cut off part of his own ear. He ate paint chips loaded with toxins and poured turpentine on his pillow to sleep. He often stared directly into the sun for long periods of time. He ran absolutely no risk of being appointed Director of the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Finally, he bought a gun and shot himself. People ask me, "Why? What makes Vinnie such a Top Dog?" I say this: every serious painter, sooner or later, goes out on a ledge and finds it uncomfortable. It's too risky, too scary, they're too exposed out there. Not Vincent. He went there and never came back. He lived there, he thrived there, he danced there, he died there. That's the difference between him and most everyone else - Vincent knew painting would not be good for him, so he ran after it hungrily and let it devour him. I can only stand back and look at him in wide-eyed wonder. In his life he sold only one painting. In a way that is just so, so perfect. Ahhhh, Vincent. Biography Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life's ups and downs. He has had nearly one hundred solo exhibitions in galleries across America, Australia and New Zealand, while also being featured at various prestigious international fairs including Art Miami, Artexpo New York, Sofa Chicago, Chicago Contemporary & Classic, and palmbeach3. Markus has amassed a collector base which includes Heads of State, major corporations and celebrities worldwide. Markus' wife and muse is artist, Sheryl Pierson. The two live and work in a converted loft in Kansas City, Missouri. "There's no doubt in my mind that my success has more to do with luck than talent, more to do with stubbornness than vision, more to do with ignorance than insight, but the fact remains that I pursued my dream and attained it against staggering odds. I say this now to anyone who will listen: even if I had failed, it would have been worth it. Better to face a brutal truth than to grow old wondering what might have been. " Markus Pierson

Toyokuni I (1769-1825), the head of the Utagawa School, was impressed by his sketches and took him as an apprentice in 1800. As usual, he then was provided with an artist's name that contained a part of his Master's name "Kunisada". He developed his own style that influenced the styles of other leading contemporary artist. Moreover, his productivity was extraordinary! His life's work is estimated at about 20,000 designs, which mostly show Kabuki motifs and actor's portraits.
