Beatles - Portable Reel To Reel Tape Recorder Used At The Star-Club, Hamburg With a Tape Recording of The Beatles.

Lot 160: Beatles - Portable Reel To Reel Tape Recorder Used At The Star-Club, Hamburg With a Tape Recording of The Beatles.

by Ted Owen & Co.

April 1, 2015, 6:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £25,000 - £35,000

Description: Beatles - Portable Reel To Reel Tape Recorder Used At The Star-Club, Hamburg With a Tape Recording of The Beatles. This vintage Phillips portable tape recorder is of great importance to the history of the Beatles, for it is the machine on which the album Live! At The Star-Club, Hamburg, Germany; 1962 was originally recorded. The four-track recorder was purchased in Berlin in October 1962 by Ted "Kingsize" Taylor, the leader of the Liverpool group Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes. The Dominoes shared a Star-Club residency with the Beatles in December 1962, during the last of the Beatles' extended trips to Hamburg. Taylor had suspended a microphone from the ceiling of the club which ran to the Phillips recorder, and had taken to recording his group - and then others - at the venue. According to Taylor, he approached John Lennon one evening and asked if he had any objections to Taylor recording a Beatles performance. John's reply was that it was fine "so long as you get the ale in"- which Taylor did, and he also rolled the tape. Taylor, left the tape at his mother's home upon his return to Liverpool, and didn't address the recording again until 1965 when he presented an edited version to Brian Epstein to gauge his interest for possible release. Epstein purportedly replied that due to the substandard quality of the recording there would be no commercial interest, with a purchase offer to Taylor of 20 pounds for the tape Offered in this lot are two portable recorders owned by Kingsize Taylor: one, the Phillips recorder purchased in Germany and used to record the Beatles at the Star-Club, and two, a Grundig recorder subsequently purchased in Great Britain, and used by Taylor to create the edited tape presented to Brian Epstein. The Grundig recorder does include a microphone, however, it is not the mic that was used to record the Beatles at the Star-Club. A copy of the edited tape as presented to Epstein is also included. This tape is not the master used for the Lingasong release, and no copyright is conferred with its purchase. A two-record vinyl copy of the Lingasong release is included for listening enjoyment.

by Doyle New York

April 15, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: BOSWELL, JAMES The life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. comprehending an account of his studies and numerous works, in chronological order; a series of his epistolary correspondence and conversations with many eminent persons; and various original pieces of his composition, never before published. The whole exhibiting a view of literature and literary men in Great-Britain, for near half a century, during which he flourished. London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition, one of 1750 copies, second state, with the correct reading "give" on line 10 of page 135. Two volumes, early (and probably original) boards with blue paper covering, rebacked later in brown morocco, and with the supralibros of Robert Tyndall Hamilton Bruce blocked on the upper cover of each volume, and his monogram on the spines. 11 1/2 x 9 inches (29 x 23 cm); portrait, xii, [16] pp. contents and errata, 516 pp.; [2], 588 pp., with the "Round Robin" plate and the terminal plate of Johnson's handwriting. Boards rubbed and soiled, spines a trifle rubbed with some minor weakness at the head of the front board of the first volume, some slight foxing as usual, but an entirely uncut copy in what appear to be the boards of issue. As noted, the Bruce copy (his library, sold Edinburgh, 1900), with the later bookplate of Winston Henry Hagen. A pleasing copy of the first and greatest of English biographies, perhaps the earliest with a modern sensibility. It is as telling an account of the inner life of Boswell as it is of Johnson, its ostensible subject. The book is quite rare uncut. Pottle 79; Grolier English 65; Rothschild 463; Tinker 338. C

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $640 - $960

Description: Cavern Club Membership Cards for 1962 and 1963. This is the place where it all started, a music club in a warehouse cellar at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool where the Beatles performed 292 times from 1961 to 1963. Offered here are two original and complete numbered "Membership Card" booklets for the 1962 (No. 271) and 1963 (No. 1910) seasons, both 2.5" x 3.75" in size. They each have the original owner's name written in and the 1962 edition has the daily show schedule written out on a "Club Notes" page. Two great souvenirs of that amazing time and place. Just think, these items were almost certainly in the same room with the Beatles as they honed their performance craft and hoped for their big break. Very Good condition.
