[Napoleon in Italy, Criminal Code & Procedure] 1807-10

by Bibliopathos

June 10, 2015, 5:00 PM CET

Milano, Italy

Estimated Price: €200 - €300

Description: THE CRIMINAL CODE AND THE CODE OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE OF THE REIGN OF ITALY, UNDER NAPOLEON [1.]: Codice di procedura penale pel regno d'Italia. Milano: dalla Reale stamperia, [1807].[together with:][2.]: Codice dei delitti e delle pene pel Regno d'Italia. Edizione ufficiale. Milano: dalla Reale stamperia, 1810.[1.]: 8vo (228x148 mm), paper binding; pp. 239, [1].[2.]: 8vo (200x120 mm), cardboard binding, with gilt title on a red label glued at spine; pp. 176.Original edition of this code proclaimed in November 1810 by Napoleon as King of Italy and translation of the French Napoleonic Criminal Code. The Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) (Italian: Regno d'Italia) was a French client state founded in Northern Italy by Napoleon I, that ended with his defeat and fall. The Kingdom of Italy was born on March 17, 1805, when the Italian Republic, whose president was Napoleon Bonaparte, became the Kingdom of Italy, and the Emperor Napoleon I was crowned King of Italy at the Duomo di Milano, Milan, on May 26, 1805, with the Iron Crown of Lombardy. It was governed throughout its existence by Napoleon's step-son, Eugène de Beauharnais, who served as Viceroy for his step-father. It consisted of the same areas that had comprised the Cisalpine Republic and then the Italian Republic.Even though the republican Constitution was never formally abolished, a series of Constitutional Statutes completely altered it. The Legislative Body, the old parliament, remained in theory, but it never summoned after 1805; the Napoleonic Code was introduced.During the kingdom's life, the administrative system of the State changed for domestic and international reasons. Following the defeat of Austria and the Treaty of Pressburg, Napoleon annexed to Italy the territory of former Republic of Venice (May 1, 1806). Following the dissolution of the Papal States, the kingdom was extended along the Adriatic coast (April 20, 1808), and three new departments of the Marche Region were established. The final territorial change came in action on June 10, 1810, when the southern Tirol, up to the city of Bolzano, was annexed, creating the 24th and last department: Haut Adige.Provenance: Private library of a Verona noble family, whose roots are in Mantua and in which there were distinguished lawyers and jurists.
