Description: 1 of 1. I Am The Walrus 2nd Edition by Rafael Padilla (b.1948-d.2006)-Measurements Approx.24" x 33". Surreal pop art style. This is a true original work not a giclée, lithograph or serigraph. Once this piece is sold it is gone forever. No reproductions of this piece have been made. You will own the only one in existence. Includes Certificate of Authenticity Signed By The Artist. This piece will never be reproduced again. Includes Certificate of Authenticity Signed by The Artist's Estate.

Condition Report: Excellent condition. To say that Rafael Padilla loved the Beatles is an understatement. The fact is that he adored the Beatles and their music. In 1964 he heard for the first time "And I Love Her" by the Beatles. This song is the fifth track on their third album, A Hard Day's Night, it was released 20 July 1964 with "If I Fell" as a single by Capitol Records in the United States, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. From that moment on he was definitely bitten by a bug, a Beatle. This bug did not leave Rafael until his untimely death from stomach cancer in 2006.The odd thing is that Rafael worked as an art teacher for 26 years and did not paint this series until after 1980. Nova Art Auctions is proud to present this never before seen collection. Rafael's heirs decided to sell all of the collection and this is the time. All of the pieces of art are Certified Originals, signed and dated by the artist. All come with a genuine certificate of authenticity. Once this collection is sold that will be it.

MASSIVE LAPIS LAZULI FREEFORM

Lot 43: MASSIVE LAPIS LAZULI FREEFORM

by I.M. Chait

July 26, 2014, 1:00 PM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $45,000 - $55,000

Description: MASSIVE LAPIS LAZULI FREEFORM Afghanistan This exceptional sculpture has been fashioned and polished from one single massive piece of finest Afghan lapis. Lapis lazuli has been prized since ancient times - beads of it have even been found at Neolithic sites in the Caucasus. It was favored by the Egyptians, who considered it sacred to the goddess Isis, and used it for making amulets and scarabs. Cleopatra used ground lapis for her eye-shadow, and it was used to color the eyebrows of the funeral mask of King Tutankhamun. In later times, it was ground to provide the tempera pigment ultramarine, usually reserved for the most important figure in religious paintings, especially the robes of the Virgin Mary. This superlative specimen boasts the richest deep blue coloring, generously flecked, streaked and clouded with contrasting milky white calcite and glittering silvery pyrite. Of dramatically craggy, mountainous form, it measures approximately 37 x 24 x 6 inches and weighs over 300 lb, presented on a tapering rectangular-section marble base.

TRILOBITE

Lot 54: TRILOBITE

by I.M. Chait

July 26, 2014, 1:00 PM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,200

Description: TRILOBITE Morocco Fossils of the trilobite have been prized by man for over 25,000 years: the Cro-Magnon settlement in France known as the "Grotte du Trilobite" yielded an example with a hole drilled through it, for use as a decorative adornment, and others have been found in Greek, Roman and Egyptian tombs. They were known to have been sold on the streets of 15th-century Europe, and closer to our own age were sought out by such celebrated collectors as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. This is a good-sized example, excellently preserved, from the deeply-ridged armor of the thorax exoskeleton, to the rugose texture of the head and the finely detailed compound eye, with a rich black patina, 4 1/2 inches long on a dark gray matrix.

VERY RARE MUMMIFIED BABOON HAND

Lot 236: VERY RARE MUMMIFIED BABOON HAND

by I.M. Chait

July 26, 2014, 1:00 PM PST

Beverly Hills, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $5,000

Description: VERY RARE MUMMIFIED BABOON HAND The practice of mummification has been performed for thousands of years throughout the world from South America to Asia, but of course the most famous mummies are those of ancient Egypt. Most often associated with important personages, mummification was also performed on certain animals important to the Egyptian people, either as pets or as representations of the gods, or simply as food for the deceased in the afterlife. Baboons were significant in this culture as representations of Thoth, one of the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon, god of the Moon and of wisdom. He was frequently represented with the head of an ibis, or that of a baboon. Not being native to Egypt, baboons were imported at great cost during the New Kingdom and unsuccessfully bred as ritual animals. Baboons were bred specifically for their religious significance and sacred troops accompanied nobility in the afterlife as they were considered vessels for the gods to inhabit. Although the provenance of the present specimen has been lost, it has been identified as the left hand of a baboon, with the characteristic hessian cartonnage. Where the covering is missing, the blackened skin is exposed, adding to the evocative effect, as do the curving fingers. The two middle fingers show exposed distal phalange bones, and at the wrist, part of the lunate bone protrudes amidst the straw-like tufts of desiccated flesh. A highly unusual specimen, it measures 6 1/4 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide.
