New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $12,000 - $18,000

Description: Size: 13 ft 3 in x 18 ft 8 in (4.04 m x 5.69 m) - Vintage Persian Kilim, Persia, 1954 - Here is a unique vintage Persian rug, rendered in unusual proportions. Indeed, the extremely rare size of this piece tells us that it was in fact custom made. Quite likely, this rug was ordered by an individual with the express purpose of giving it as a wedding present. Due to the inscription running along the lower horizontal border, we are able to precisely date this rug to 1954 - or 1374 in the Hijri calendar, as it is denoted on the rug. A geometric pattern adorns the field, which is surrounded by such a complex series of inner and outer borders that it is simply complementary to the remainder of the piece, rather than dominating the overall action of the composition.

Hitchcock's Frenzy Brenda (Barbara Leigh-Hunt) Signed PR Neck-Tie Strangulation Photo

Lot 115: Hitchcock's Frenzy Brenda (Barbara Leigh-Hunt) Signed PR Neck-Tie Strangulation Photo

by Premiere Props

October 25, 2014, 11:00 AM PST

El Segundo, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $200

Description: Hitchcock's Frenzy Brenda (Barbara Leigh-Hunt) Signed PR Neck-Tie Strangulation Photo - Not long after Alfred Hitchcock's last masterpiece "Frenzy" (1971) begins, a fruit merchant, Robert Rusk (Barry Foster) tries to seduce a middle-aged matchmaker named Brenda Margaret Blaney (Barbara Leigh-Hunt). She turns him down, so in a sudden shocking horrific act that only Hitchcock could have orchestrated, Rusk rapes Brenda, then strangles her with a necktie. What follows is one of the most imitated brilliant shots in a Hitchcock film, in which the camera backs away from the door of Rusk's upper-floor apartment and descends the staircase, seemingly without a cut, to the ground level, out the building's front door, and then to the opposite side of the street to show that although pure horror is happening inside, the innocent peaceful world outside is oblivious to it. Among the directors who gave homage to this amazing sequence was Brian De Palma who "borrowed" the exact same scene in his remake of "Scarface" (1982), with the chain-saw dismemberment of Pacino's brother in an apartment bathroom. He has his camera also go out the window to the streets of Miami where life goes on peacefully. Besides the astonishing and unsettling traveling shot in "Frenzy" one can never forget the extreme close-up of Brenda being strangled. No film has ever shown before such graphic long-held detail of this gruesome act. In fact, the lingering shot of her salivating tongue after she is strangled was finally reluctantly cut by Hitchcock at the extreme urging of Universal Studios. However, the strangulation still burns in the minds of everyone who watched it, very much like the stabbing death of Janet Leigh in "Psycho". For Barbara Leigh-Hunt, a classically trained actress straight out of the Old Vic Company in London, the role and this specific scene was a mixed blessing. It gave her immortality, but also was all anyone ever wanted to talk about. And for someone who started as an actress in 1959, and is still active, this has become somewhat of a burden! In fact, she reportedly rarely will talk about it, and rarely will signed her name, especially to anything connected with this spine-chilling iconic moment in Cinema History. That is why this signed Universal Studio photo is so very rare and collectable. It shows Barbara's famous close-up as she is being strangled by the neck tie, and is signed by her! It took the urging of a well known London collector of Hitchcock memorabilia to make it happen! It comes with a Letter of Provenience from the collector. B&W, 8"x10".

Description: Porcelain, with white glaze, hand-painted décor and gilt interior Germany, mid-18th century Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, unmarked Painted in grisaille technique with merchant scenes The upper part with typical tiny indentations to stabilize the needle when sewing Height: 2 cm, diameter: 2 cm Very good condition Rare Meissen piece in original state The present Meissen thimble from the mid-18th century is a rare collector's item. The white glazed porcelain is fitted with a gilt interior and features the typical indentations to stabilize the needle in the upper part. The underside shows a frieze depicting meticulous merchant scenes executed in black stain painting. The thimble is in very good, original condition with minor abrasion of the gilding. The height is 2 cm, and the diameter measures 2 cm.Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality - the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the porcelain's high quality. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and the company goes as far as to have its own mine to win the needed kaolin from, also known as china clay, for production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a 'master painter' in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
