Hubert Sattler (1817-1904), Kosmorama - Speyer Cathedral, 1874

by Auctionata AG

May 18, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €32,000 - €40,000

Description: Oil on canvas Austria/Germany, 1874 Hubert Sattler (1817-1904) - Austrian landscape and panorama painter Signed and dated lower right ‘H. Sattler 1874’Dimensions: 72 x 98 cm Good condition Provenance: Private Collection, Austria Rich in detail and very finely executed, Sattler presents the impressive Romanesque architecture of the cathedral in Speyer, emphasizing it with a special light; Sattler’s architecture paintings fetch up to €80,600 on the international auction marketThe Austrian painter Hubert Sattler comes from a family of painters. His father Johann Michael Sattler (1786-1847) created in 1825-29 a monumental panoramic painting of the city of Salzburg and the surrounding area. Following the example of his father's large-scale paintings, Hubert also started to paint panoramic images, which are called Kosmorama. These paintings were presented as if viewed with a zograscope and accordingly provided with a special lighting. On numerous trips to the Orient and South America Hubert Sattler collected a rich repertoire of motifs with highly detailed architectural representations. In the painting presented here, the artist depicts an idyllic view of the cathedral in Speyer, using the light to emphasize the monumental size of the building, which he reproduces in almost photorealistic accuracy. The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘H. Sattler 1874’. It is overall in good age-appropriate condition with age-related craquelure, the varnish is slightly browned. In the sky with larger retouching. Otherwise overall of good impression. The image measures 72 x 98 cm. The framed dimensions are 114 x 86 cm. The frame with slight traces of use.Hubert Sattler (1817-1904) Hubert Sattler was born in Vienna in 1870. A short time later the family moved to Salzburg. In 1825 Sattler moved back to Vienna, where he received drawing lessons by Johann Josef Schindler and attended courses at the Vienna Academy. Following the example of his father, Hubert Sattler also began with the presentation of panorama-like paintings. Since he almost traveled through the whole world, his paintings witness a variety of motifs, so that he was eventually referred to as a travel painter. His paintings are characterized by a photo-realistic accuracy and a unique atmosphere. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
