Lot 79: George Benjamin Luks American, 1867-1933 Entr'Acte Signed George Luks (ll) Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inche...

by Doyle New York

May 5, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: George Benjamin Luks American, 1867-1933 Entr'Acte Signed George Luks (ll) Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inches Provenance: Parke-Bernet Galleries, NY, Paintings, Watercolors and Drawings by George B. Luks: Property of the Estate of the Late George B. Luks, Apr. 5, 1950, lot 63 Lemuel and Shirley Ayers, Stony Point, NY, circa 1950 Thence by descent to the current owner Exhibited: St. Louis, MO, City Art Museum, Twenty-Seventh Annual Exhibition of Paintings by American Artists, 1932 New York, Whitney Museum of Art, First Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting, 1932-33 New York, Rehn Galleries In March 2006, Judith O'Toole observed that "I would judge this painting to be a late work -- probably done in 1925-32. Luks was always interested in performers, but I cannot identify the sitters." In the early years of the twentieth century, George Luks was one of numerous American artists, including John Sloan, Everett Shinn, and Walt Kuhn, who chose circus themes and clowns as their subjects. Indeed, so popular were these themes that in 1929, Juliana Force organized an exhibition entitled Circus in Paint at The Whitney Studio Club, where works were installed in galleries replete with peanut shells scattered on the floor and decorated by Louis Bouche with all manner of circus ephemera. While this lively exhibition may have inspired a late body of work by Luks exploring the circus theme, including the present work as well as A Clown [1929, Collection Museum of Fine Arts Boston], the artist had explored the subject much earlier in his career while working as a cartoonist and illustrator in Pennsylvania. A larger-than-life personality, Luks was an inveterate story-teller and street brawler who, in his late teens and early twenties, toured throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey with a minstrel show in an act called "Buzzey and Anstock," in which they performed in full costume with face paint. His fellow Ashcan painter, Everett Shinn, described him as "a circus in one" and "the clown who had found the circus ring too small and had dragged his antics out into the streets." (Everett Shinn on George Luks: An Unpublished Memoir, April 1966, p. 5, Archives of American Art) In Entr'Acte a kindly clown tenderly holds a young child on his lap. In both this work and A Clown, Luks renders his subjects sympathetically, his own life experiences allowing him to identify with performers who made their audiences laugh but were serious and perhaps melancholic within.
