August 1, 2014, 10:00 AM EST

East Dennis, MA, USA

Estimated Price: $12,000 - $15,000

Description: JOHN JOSEPH ENNEKING American, 1841-1916 The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston. Signed lower right "Enneking". Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science, commissioned Enneking to paint a representation of the Mother Church after an expansion was completed in 1906. This painting is the first rendering. A second rendering, smaller and lighter in tone, was completed after consultation with Eddy. Titled "The Dawn", it still hangs in the Mother's Room at the church. In 1907 Enneking wrote a letter to Eddy, per her request, explaining his inspiration for the work. The letter was published in the "Christian Science Sentinel" Vol. X No. 3. Enneking was paid $10,000 for the painting, an enormous sum at the time and probably the largest commission price he ever received. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, known as the "Mother Church", is the administrative headquarters of the Christian Science Church and is located in the Back Bay area of Boston. Construction began in 1894 with further additions built throughout the next century. The church is surrounded by a plaza designed in the 1960s by the firm of noted architect I.M. Pei. Oil on canvas board 16.25" x 19.25". Housed in a period hand-carved and gilt Newcomb-Macklin frame designed by Stanford White.

Condition Report: Overall good condition with a very slight amount of surface dirt that looks like it will be easily removed. The absence of a condition report does NOT imply that an an object is free of defects or restoration. Please contact Eldred's before bidding with any questions as to condition.
