RUDOLF BAUER - Pencil drawing on paper

Lot 325: RUDOLF BAUER - Pencil drawing on paper

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $2,500

Description: Rudolf Bauer (German, 1881 - 1953). "Non-Objective Solitary Confinement Prison Drawing [No.8]". Pencil drawing on paper. 1938. Signed with the initial in pencil, lower right. Drawn on "brown paper bag" paper. Provenance: Estate of the Artist. A highly important example of Bauer?s rare ?prison drawings.? Among them, the ?solitary confinement prison drawings? are of the utmost rarity. As Wikipedia states, ?during his time in prison [1938], he created dozens of non-objective drawings on scavenged scraps of paper.? Bauer was in prison for several months. Initially he was held in solitary confinement. He created the present drawing, our example, during the solitary confinement period. He then was moved to the general prison population and allowed to perform office clerking functions. During this time he created yet more drawings, generally more refined and on office stationery, many with typewriter type on the verso. These drawings, while still rare, are obtainable, whereas the ?solitary confinement? drawings are virtually unobtainable. The complete text of the Wikipedia article dealing with this period: ?In 1938, upon his return from an exhibition of his work in Paris, Bauer was arrested by the Nazis for his "degenerate" art and for speculating on the black market ? meaning selling his work to [Solomon] Guggenheim. The previous year Bauer?s work had been included in the infamous Degenerate Art show in Munich, organized by the Nazis to show all the deviant, abstract art. In spite of this Bauer had refused to move from his home country. Upon his arrest Bauer was held in a Gestapo prison for several months, as [Hilla] Rebay and Guggenheim worked to free him. After several false starts, he was finally released unconditionally in August 1938. During his time in prison, he created dozens of non-objective drawings on scavenged scraps of paper. He spent the next months getting his paperwork in order and made the difficult decision to leave his homeland, emigrating to the United States in July 1939, just months before the beginning of World War II.?. Overall size: 6 5/8 x 5 1/2 in. (168 x 140 mm). Image size: 6 7/16 x 4 3/8 in. (164 x 111 mm). [25004] |1200| {R100}

Bears signature, lower right. Light cream wove paper. Condition: overall staining and foxing; no holes or tears. Literature/catalogue raisonne: For the finished drawing, see M. Exhibitions of the finished drawing: Milan, Palazzo Reale, 'Amedeo Modigliani: L'angelo dal volto severo,' March-July, 2003, p. 349, no. LXV. Tokyo, The Bunkamura Museum of Art; Sapporo, Museum of Contemporary Art; Osaka, Daimaru Museum Umeda; Shimane Art Museum and The Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, 'Modigliani et Hébuterne: Le couple tragique,' April-December, 2007, p. 119, no. 86 (illustrated). A study for the larger, finished drawing executed by Modigliani probably between 1917 and 1919. This drawing sold for $132,240 (?97,000) at Christie's, Paris, 05/20/2009, lot 106. As Christie's noted in their sale catalogue, "[This portrait reflects] the relationship between Amedeo Modigliani and Jeanne Hébuterne between 1917 and 1920 - a relationship which was passionate, excessive and tragic (Jeanne Hébuterne committed suicide, pregnant with their second child, two days after the death of Modigliani from tubercular meningitis in 1920), but also profoundly artistic. The two artists had a reciprocal relationship. Modigliani, whose artistic style was already mature, bore a deep admiration for his young companion (whose swan-like appearance was a significant inspiration to him) and Hébuterne's art meanwhile constantly evolved under the influence of Modigliani's intensity.". Approx 32x38. Edition of 95. The signature is in the plate. Custom framed. A leading French Post-Impressionist, Paul Cezanne bridged the way from 19th century Impressionism to a revolutionary new world of 20th century Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are quoted saying Cezanne was the father of us all. Although his radical departures were under appreciated and even ridiculed in his time, Cezannes studies of visual perception, geometric simplification, and experimentation with complex fractured forms kept his style changing significantly over his lifetime. Paul Cezanne was an eccentric, solitary enigma, often working in isolation, removed even from his own family.
