Vintage Moroccan Rug 46624

Lot 50: Vintage Moroccan Rug 46624

by Nazmiyal Auctions

November 6, 2014, 7:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $6,000

Description: Size: 6 ft 9 in x 9 ft 6 in (2.06 m x 2.9 m) - Moroccan Rug, Morocco, Mid 20th Century - This vintage Moroccan rug is a magnificent example of Morocco's graphic patterns, rich artistic traditions and use of locally available fibers, including sisal and wool. The sandy camel-colored field displays a textural variegation created by the natural color variations that occur within the fibrous agave leaves that sisal is made from. Bold carmine checkers with wide spacing highlight the interplay between the intense ornaments and the neutral background. Lozenge-filled borders and broad carmine bands adorned with directional chevron stripes bolster the graphic composition and provide a bold visual focal point. Minute accents deepen the composition and make each carmine checker appear like a decorative yachting flag within a repeating pattern that is intrinsically graphic.

Description: Chart, or Primer to teach the English alphabet to Yiddish-speaking immigrants. Fonts in English and Yiddish Single leaf. Worn at edges. Folio (landscape)• A highly original and very scarce production, designed with a fine sense of graphic style. The method of instruction transliterates into Yiddish-phonetics each of the letters of the English alphabet, hence the letter "A" is delineated in Hebrew letters as "Ay" (Alef, Yud, Yud); "B" (Beis, Yud, Yud); "C" (Samech, Yud), etc. The transliterations of the letters "H," "J," and "W," for which there are no obviously available Hebrew phonetical letters are here designated quite amusingly.Clearly this fragile chart was an important tool for the newly arrived Yiddish-speaking immigrant to America.New York, J.
