William Hamilton of Bangour, poet and Jacobite - Strange, Sir Robert

by Lyon & Turnbull

May 13, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £100 - £150

Description: William Hamilton of Bangour, poet and Jacobite - Strange, Sir Robert William Hamilton of Bangour (1704-54) engraved by Sir Robert Strange, after Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1706-91), Rouen: 1747-8, 23 x 27.5cm including mount (not laid-down)

Condition Report: There has been much confusion between this image of Hamilton of Bangour, which shows him in his dressing gown at a desk ornamented with thistles, and the better-known portrait by Gavin Hamilton which was also engraved by Strange at about the same time. The latter shows the poet in idealised classical profile, his flowing hair bound with a fillet. Two different versions exist, facing both right and left. This latter image was used in eighteenth-century editions of Hamilton's poetical works. Condition Disclaimer Under the Conditions of Sale applicable to the sale of the lot, buyers must satisfy themselves as to each and every aspect of the quality of the lot, including (without limitation) its authorship, attribution, condition, provenance, authenticity, age, suitability and origin. Lots are sold on an 'as is' basis but the actual condition of the lot may not be as good as indicated by its outward appearance. In particular parts may have been replaced or renewed and lots may not be authentic or of satisfactory quality. Any statement in relation to the lot is merely an expression of opinion of the seller or Lyon & Turnbull and should not be relied upon as an inducement to bid on the lot. Lots are available for inspection prior to the sale and you are strongly advised to examine any lot in which you are interested prior to the sale. Description: PETER CLAPHAM SHEPPARD, O.S.A., R.C.A.DELIVERING HAY TO MARKET – (THE UNEXPECTED STORM)oil on canvassigned 24.25 ins x 30.25 ins; 61.6 cms x 76.8 cms Provenance:Private Collection, CanadaLiterature:A.Y. Jackson, A Painter’s Country: The Autobiography of A.Y. Jackson, Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited, Toronto/Vancouver, 1958, page 15.Note:Peter Clapham Sheppard painted in a number of locations throughout his life, visiting cities such as Fredericton, Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and Hamilton, among others. While this work is not attributed to a specific place, as the title has been lost over time, it could be any number of major Canadian urban centres. Numerous public markets, each devoted to particular commodities and goods including fruits and vegetables, wood, cattle, and hay, were fixtures within the cityscape during Sheppard’s lifetime. Until the early 1940s, it was not uncommon for deliveries about town to be made by horse-drawn wagons and sleighs. The delivery depicted in this lot may have been to the hay market in Toronto – in the eastern part of the city between Jarvis and George Streets, or in Montreal – in either present-day Griffintown or Victoria Square. It is possible that the cart has stopped at the weigh house for assessment of its load prior to sale. Alternatively, the delivery could be coming from the market, en route with a large purchase to one of the many municipal buildings that relied on horsepower in their daily conduct of business, such as an armoury, police station or post office (as suggested by the large buildings which set the stage for the hay wagon). As though caught off-guard by an unexpected storm, the drivers huddle in conversation and the horse pauses for rest from the weight of its burden. The vehicle transporting the hay is a cart and not a sleigh – its wheels unsuitable for inclement weather. Perhaps winter has come unexpectedly and has caught the farmers unprepared? Details of the urban landscape are blurred in the winter whirlwind – hinted at by parcels of greens, blues and pinks.  In the early nineteen-teens, Sheppard counted among his colleagues, esteemed painters such as J.E.H. MacDonald and Lawren Harris, all of who were interested in the atmospheric affects caused by industry or weather. As A.Y. Jackson recounts: “It was through… Morrice that (the young Canadian painters) first became aware of the fresh and invigorating movements going on in the art circles of France,” specifically Impressionism. There were other influences at work in Canada in those early years, including William Clapp and Clarence Gagnon. However, Jackson and others unanimously acknowledged that it was Maurice Cullen, who could hold title as the father of Canadian Impressionism. This lot is reminiscent of Cullen’s scenes of oxen hauling hay, and of his urban scenes where cab stand horses dutifully wait for passengers in driving blizzards.

By Mead and Stream by Benjamin Williams Leader

by The Loft Fine Art

May 15, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

Clinton Township, MI, USA

Description: This classic poster print of a rolling English landscape depicts a tranquil river among trees and grass. The sky, however, is thick with portentous clouds. An interesting work from a master artist. Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923, Worcester, UK) was a well respected landscape painter and a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He was an immensely successful artist during his lifetime, securing his first sale at the age of 23 and continuing to exhibit and sell well for the remainder of his life, particularly to the art dealer Agnew's. His work evolved from highly realistic works to a more impressionistic style that proved successful for the last years of his career. His works are held at the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum as well as many private collections.

A sculpted marble model after the 'Hope Isis'

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

May 27, 2015, 2:00 PM GMT

Mayfair, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £20,000 - £30,000

Description: A sculpted marble model after the 'Hope Isis', a 1st-2nd century AD archaistic marble of the Romano-Egyptian earth goddess, 20th century, the standing figure expertly and faithfully carved after the Antique, portrayed standing and wearing chiton and himation over her voluptuous form, the left breast exposed beneath the folds of her himation draped diaphanously, the head and forearms missing in the manner of the original, 155cm high The famed 'Hope Isis' was originally secured by Sir William Hamilton, the diplomat, antiquarian, archaeologist and vulcanologist, whilst serving as British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples . Hamilton could reasonably be described as having been obsessed with collecting antiquities and his buying habits nearly bankrupted him more than once. His collection was highly important though and he negotiated its sale in entirety in 1771 to the British Museum, but on his return to Naples he found it difficult to stop amassing further antiquities In 1798, as Hamilton's posting drew to a close he organised for the shipment of his replenished collection of antiquities and Magna Graecia vases back to England, (a small part of the second vase collection being lost when HMS Colossus foundered off the Scilly Isles). In financial trouble again, Hamilton attempted to negotiate for the sale of the surviving part of the second collection to the British Museum, but this time was unsuccessful. The compulsive collector was forced to have the whole collection catalogued for sale at Mr James Christie's auction house, when at the eleventh hour Thomas Hope (1769-1831) stepped in and purchased the lot. The Roman marble of Isis that the version offered here so finely reproduces was part of that collection On Hope'a death ownership of the Isis passed through his family descendants, being offered for sale at Christie's again in July 1917, after which it graced various private collections before coming to auction one last time, this time at Sothebys New York in 2004. Andras 1805, mounted on black and contained within a period gilt frame with domed glass -- 6¼in. (16cm.) high Catherine Andras, together with her adoptive father, Robert Bowyer, and John Whichelo were the last three artists to capture Nelson at Merton in September 1805. Andras's profile was immediately popular and drew praise from Lady Hamilton, and the Dean & Chapter of Westminster Abbey commissioned their life-size wax effigy to compete with Nelson's tomb at St. Paul's as a direct consequence. The profile was also much imitated by other artists, such as Tassie, for use on medallions. ++8mm hairline crack in hair just above forehead; frame cracked at 1 o'clock, some patches of wear to gesso and gilt commensurate with age.

West Cornwall, May 3, 1957. To Beverly Plummer. ----- “Thanks for sending me Roxie’s fables, which I regard as highly original, owing little to mine. It is really remarkable for a child of four and may be [sic.] she will be the coming fable writer. Give her my love. Cordially yours…” ----- After several governmental positions, including one at the American embassy in Paris, Thurber began his career as a journalist. From the “city of light” he worked for the Chicago Tribune before moving to New York as an employee of the Evening Post. In 1927 Thurber joined the staff of The New Yorker from whence he wrote short stories and drew witty cartoons. Two years later his first book, Is Sex Necessary?, co-written with New Yorker colleague E. B. White and including his humorous drawings, was published. It was followed by The Thurber Carnival and My Life and Hard Times. Despite his failing eyesight, Thurber continued to write through the 1950s. Often considered a successor to Mark Twain, Thurber influenced such writers at Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut. Folded and in very good condition, with the original envelope postmarked from Hamilton, Bermuda, and the return address reading, “James Thurber, The Ledgelets, Somerset Bridge, Bermuda.”
