Hebrew-Hungarian anthem, Budapest, 1863, written by the pupils of the first Reformers:

Lot 382: Hebrew-Hungarian anthem, Budapest, 1863, written by the pupils of the first Reformers: "Hungary holy land of our forefathers"

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

April 12, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: "Anthem", a rare copy of a unique song in Hebrew written in Hungary in 1863 by a couple of Hungarian Jews, Dr. Vilmos Josesfi and Ignatz Reich, bringing quotes and links from Jewish holy books in order to express their desire to assimilate as Hungarians. The song presents a unique perspective of assimilated Jews in Eastern Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, reflecting national feelings to their country while using their knowledge of the Jewish bookshelf. Reich was a Hungarian teacher and writer, a patriot Hungarian Jewish who always wore the national costume. He was a pupil of Aaron Chorin, one of the first reformers, who finally no longer believed that Israel is a nation and that Sabbath can move to Sunday. Reich has published articles in favor of emancipation and assimilation of Hungarian Jewry as Hungarians. During the Spring of Nations (1848, Hungary rebelled against the Austrian Empire led by the Habsburgs), he expressed his feelings using patriotic songs. The anthem uses quotations from many sources from the Bible and prayer books, such as "renew a good year upon us ", "inheritance without limit", "And for the precious things of the fruits of the sun" and more. The song forces the phrases quoted onto concepts related to Hungary. "Sacred mountains" shall mean the Carpathian Mountains of Hungary, and "Bat-Ami" is the Hungarian people. The Bible and its meanings are uprooted from their original arrangement that speak of the people of Israel and the Land of Israel, and are changed to praise and exalt Hungary and the Hungarian people. Unusual document from the beginning of the reform period in Hungary. Not found in the National Library! Very rare! 26X18.5 cm. Good condition.

Legends of the Pikes Peak Region

Lot 4196: Legends of the Pikes Peak Region

by Holabird Western Americana

April 18, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $50 - $150

Description: Small book: subtitle: the Sacred Myths of the Manitou by Ernest Whitney, M. A. assisted by William S. Alexnder, illustrated by Thomas C. Parrish. From the text: "However uncouth they may be, the myths and legends of early nations, like the poetry of later, give the highest and truest exponents of their characters, and preserve with a singular fidelity the very essence of their daily lives, their fears and hopes, their assumptions and intuitions. It is proverbial that the songs of a people are stronger than their laws; and the myths and traditions embodying the sentiments upon which national character, national religion, are founded, are more powerful than the songs, which they inspire. A ballad of the people, a bit of folk lore, may teach us more than whole chapters of history; we can hardly understand history without such lights." Published by the Chain & Hardy Co., Denver, CO. ( 7.5" x 5") 52 pp. Soft leatherette cover, nice illustrations, some wear, good condition. City: Pikes Peak State: Colorado, Circa: 1892

Percy (Walker) - The Moviegoer,

Lot 245: Percy (Walker) - The Moviegoer,

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

April 9, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £300 - £400

Description: first edition, signed presentation inscription from Jean Stafford, A.J.Liebling and another, dated Apr., 3, 1962, original cloth-backed boards, small dents to foot, dust-jacket, spine ends and corners a little chipped, lightly rubbed and creased at head and foot, still a very good example overall, 8vo New York, 1961. A great association copy of the author's difficult to find first novel. The Moviegoer won the 1962 National Book Award largely because A.J.Liebling's enthusiastic recommendation of the book to his wife Jean Stafford, then on the National Book Award panel. The award ceremony was held in November of that year so this inscription pre-dates Walker Percy's receipt of the prize and demonstrates Stafford and Liebling's enthusiam for the book. All of the people who have signed the dedication have used the sobriquet "-Percy", presumably as a self-conscious nod to their enthused endorsement.
