Newari altar bronze mirror,-right thought, Nepal

by Eternity Gallery

June 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $1,000

Description: Newari altar bronze mirror,-right thought, Kathmandu, Nepal. This old mirror is a sacred symbol representing right thought. It reflects things as they really are, & can be seen on both Tibetan & Newari altars. This belonged to a Newari in Kathmandu, & is in excellent condition, nice patina. Width: The face is 7 inches across = 17.5 cm. Height: it stands 12 inches tall = 30 cm. Weight: 170 g. Newa people The Newa (Nepal Bhasa: New(h), Classical Nepal Bhasa: Newr or Newl) (Nepali: ) are the indigenous people of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. The valley and surrounding territory have been known from ancient times as Nepal Mandala. Newars have lived in Nepal Mandala since prehistoric times, and immigrants that arrived at different periods in its history eventually merged with the local population by adopting their language and customs. Newars are a linguistic and cultural community of mostly Tibeto-Burman and some Indo-Aryan ethnicities. Scholars have also described the Newars as being a nation. Scholars in this field have consensus that prehistoric Newar (Newari) were originally interconnected to the ancient Kirat people (Kiratis). Stone Age, prehistoric Kirat tools found by Dr. A. Y. Shetenko (Leningrad Institute of Archaeology) date back to 30,000 years ago, matching prehistoric tools unearthed in China's Gobi Desert and Yunnan. According to Nepal's 2001 census, the 1,245,232 Newars in the country are the nation's sixth largest ethnic group, representing 5.48% of the population. Condition Very good condition, original patina, no defects Low Estimate: 500 High Estimate: 1000 Orignal: Yes

Miranda, Rafael Cancel

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,000

Description: Miranda, Rafael Cancel. (1930 -) Political activist, member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party and an advocate of Puerto Rican independence. On March 1, 1954, Miranda, with fellow Nationalists Lolita Lebron, Andres Figueroa Cordero, and Irving Flores Rodriguez entered the United States Capitol building and fired 30 shots, hitting five congressmen, all of whom survived. All four Nationalists were arrested and sent to different prisons. Miranda, who was considered the primary shooter, was sentenced to 85 years and sent to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary; in 1960 he was transferred to Leavenworth, and in 1970 to Marion Penitentiary in Illinois. When he became eligible for parole in 1979, he was pardoned by President Jimmy Carter. Autograph letter signed ("Rafael"), as a prisoner in Marion Penitentiary, 2 pages, April 1, 1979. To Reverend and Mrs. S. Jackson in Philadelphia. In part: "...I have the great joy of receiving many letters - and now & then I get way behind in my answering....the jailers won't allow me to get those things that you want to send to me....Anyway, your letters are like gifts - so, you are, indeed, sending me something which I value. Yes, my friend went to his death at peace with himself, because he lived a good life - a life dedicated to the freedom of his people! He was a very very humane person - about ten thousands [sic] Puerto Ricans went to his funeral....Our people knows [sic] what we are fighting for - Yes, I'm eligible for parole - in June - but I won't apply for it, because I won't accept no conditions in my freedon, nor would I ask for pardons or things like that....very many people around the world are asking for our unconditional release (even the General Assembly of the United Nations - more than a hundred countries asked Carter for it)....it's a great comfort to me that so many people are supporting us...." Both letter and envelope have Miranda's prisoner number. Estimated Value $800 - 1,000

Mann, Thomas

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,000

Description: Mann, Thomas. Typed letter signed ("Thomas Mann"), 1 page, on personal letterhead, 10 7/8 x 7 in., Pacific Palisades, California, August 24, 1941. To a Mr McNitt, with a few corrections in Mann's hand. Mann clarifies two remarks from a recent interview with McNitt: "I would rather not mention the treaty of Versailles to which the American people is anyhow inclined to attach exagerated [sic] importance, but I only wanted to express that the German people is afraid of being "annihilated" in the case of defeat and that it should be told that nobody on earth is thinking of doing so. The annihilation of other nations is a nazi concept which is absolutely repulsive for the democracies. Another trifle are the 'twenty rooms' in our new home. This number gives an exagerated idea of the modest house we are building, and I would appreciate it if you omit this detail. It was a pleasure for Mrs. Mann and me to meet you...." Steinbeck, John

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Steinbeck, John. (1902-1968) American author; winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. Untitled autograph manuscript unsigned of an article that would be published later, 3 pages, on yellow legal paper, with a number of substantive corrections in Steinbeck's hand, and variances from the published text, no place, no date [955 to 56]. Provoked by the Republican National Committee's announcement that an advertising agency will handle its 1956 presidential campaign, Steinbeck speculates on the virtues and dangers of the tactics: "The captive audience has been conditioned to buy Squeakies -- the body building bran dust. Then suddenly the message changes and they are told to vote for Elmer Flangdangle for Senator....There is a danger that they will buy a senator and vote for a cereal. It was no accident that a cleaning powder won three public offices last year and that the sovereign people of the State of South Tioga elected a Chevrolet to the governorship. There are many people who fear that the use of the captive audience may cause us to elect a cereal to the presidency. Then there are others who believe we did it last time." The article was published in The Saturday Review, March 31, 1956, and has not been reprinted, as far as we know. God of Longevity, Japanese PAINTING, Edo 1603-1868, certified

by Eternity Gallery

June 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $6,000

Description: Certified Japanese painting on silk: God of Longevity, PAINTING with CALLIGRAPHY, Edo period (1603-1868). The painting, with the sketching idea style brush strokes, represents the God of Longevity from Chinese Daoist belief. The God of Longevity sits in a lotus posture by crossing his legs, with a tall protruded forehead, representing the typical iconography of the deity. The ink inscription was written in Japanese language, mentioned Fu Lu Shou , referring to the Three Gods, Good Fortune (Fu), Salary (Lu), and Longevity (Shou). Actually, the God of Longevity is one of the Three. The deity put his fan on his right side, and there is a large cloth bag on his left side. The cloth bag indicates the deity of Budai [Cloth Bag, Hotei in Japanese] from Chinese Buddhist belief. Budai was a Chan or Zen Buddhist monk from the tenth century Zhejiang province, China. After his death, people believed that he was the reincarnation of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. After that, people have worshiped him. Japanese accepted Chinese influence, and treat Budai as one of The Seven Gods of Fortune in Japanese native belief. Therefore, one can see that this painting represents two of the Seven Gods of Fortune. The artist of the painting and inscription is Kodou Haruhiko . I cannot find who the artist is. Based on the style of the painting, it could be painted during the Edo period (1603-1868). An antique Japanese, Shou Xing painting, depicting the deity with fan and peach under calligraphy poem Painting: 8.5 x 6.5 inches = 21.4 cm x 16.3cm Mat & frame: 16.5 x 13.5 inches = 41.2 cm x 33.8 cm. Authenticated by Dr. Qing Chang, PhD. Condition The painting is old and used, there is some loss of paper, stains, folds, etc. (refer to the photos). The painting is framed under glass for protection. Low Estimate: 3000; High Estimate: 6000; Orignal: Yes
