Description: EIGHT CARVED TWIG POINTERS Late 19th/Early 20th Century By William Abbott Willard (American, 1851-1939). Seven with carved handles. One with naturally formed handle. Lengths from 8.25" to 28.5". William Abbott Willard spent nearly his whole life in Hartford, Connecticut, where he lived in a house with Mark Twain as his neighbor on one side and Harriet Beecher Stowe on the other side. He gained a wide reputation for his hobby of carving canes as gifts for friends and relatives to commemorate the events of the day, both personal and historic. He often carved cane handles in the forms of distinguished gentlemen's heads, and he usually added an inscription explaining the occasion the cane commemorated. Most of his canes were carved from twigs he gathered on the grounds of Mark Twain's property, and he presented many to Twain and Stowe. Provenance: The Morgan Rank Collection of Folk Art and Musical Instruments.

Blanket was acquired from King Victor Emmanuel III Palace, (Palazzo Pitti) Italy, during World War II by American liberators. Mussolini would use these during parades and also were used by his generals and even can be seen being used by Italo Balbo, Governor of Libya, during Mussolini's occupation of Libya in Tripoli/Libya, March 1937. Provenance: American liberator, Staff Sergeant of the US 5th Army, 3rd division in WWII. Departing on the USS Transport "Rutledge", his division landed at Fedhala Bay French Morocco in November 8, 1942. Invading Italy through Salerno, Italy. The company entered into the King Victor Emmanuel III Palace in September 1943. Blankets, tapestries, and tablecloths were acquired by the soldiers after Mussolini abandoned & fled. In 1944 The items were secured at Anzio, in farm storage and shipped back to the United States, where they have remained packed away for 70 years. Blanket measures approximately 28.5" x 58".
