Lot 4467: First National Bank 1933 Poster/Calendar

by Holabird Western Americana

April 18, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $400

Description: Forward America, Destiny is the title of the painting depicting George Washington, Ben Franklin, Jefferson, Penn, etc. The artist was Henry (Hy) Hintermeister (American, 1897_1972). Henry Hintermeister was born in 1897 in New York. His father John Henry Hintermeister was an illustrator as well. Father and son often worked as a duo, from the 1890Ís to the 1940Ís, under the pseudonym Hy Hintermeister. They became well known producing over 1,000 of illustrations; John Henry and Henry were often compared to Norman Rockwell with their illustration storytelling. The duo produced a series of calendars, including this one for the First national Bank, Reno, NV. The last page, December, is still attached. Printed behind the calendar pages were monthly calendars for 1933 and 1934 and legal holidays listed, and a note on how to use the Maturity Calendar. A quote below the image reads: "Here is portrayed the stalwart determination that has molded the destiny of our country. Success, power, and the respect of the world have largely resulted because of the invincible spirit of Washington, the wisdom of Franklin, Jefferson's vision and Penn's friendliness. Ambition and faithfulness guided the works of Hamilton, Bradford and Raleigh; courage prompted Hudson and Columbus to sail uncharted waters. these heroes conquered despite all difficulties. Perfection was on their western horizon. Their spirits live on--America marches forward." City: Reno State: Nevada, Circa: 1933

J. Henry & Son and P.S.J. & Co. Marked Half Stock Percussion Rifle

Lot 154: J. Henry & Son and P.S.J. & Co. Marked Half Stock Percussion Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,600 - $2,750

Description: J. Henry & Son and P.S.J. & Co. Marked Half Stock Percussion Rifle The barrel of this rifle is marked "J. HENRY/& SON" behind the rear sight, and the lock plate has a oval "P.S.J & Co/[crossed branches]/WARRANTED" emblem below the bolster and a simple game bird scene at the tail. J. Henry & Son and Philip S. Justice & Co., both of Philadelphia, contracted with the U.S. government to provide rifles for annuity and treaty payments to Native American nations in the Antebellum Era. The somewhat ill fit of the components is consistent with the trade guns often purchased by the government for this use. This rifle is styled after the popular plains rifles of the early 19th century and has a heavy octagon barrel with fixed blade and notch sights. It is mounted on a maple stock with a shadow-line cheekpiece and brass furniture and also has double set triggers. Manufacturer: J. Henry & Son Model: Percussion BBL: 37 3/8 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair as refinished. The barrel and lock have nearly 50% of a streaked blue finish with traces of brown and case colors, a number of marks and scratches, and some light pitting. The barrel marking is mostly faded but legible, and the patterns and markings on the lock are clear. The brass furniture displays an aged patina with some minor marks. The stock is fine with some material absent near the junction with the breech and lock. The action is fine.

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,000

Description: Union General Henry Halleck Autograph Letter Signed "H. W. Halleck" as general in chief. One page, 8" x 10", on Head-Quarters of the Army letterhead, Washington, November 17, 1862, to the governor of Iowa, Samuel J. Kirkwood, Iowa City, Iowa. The letter reads in full: "Lt Col Sullivan reports to day that all Iowa troops captured at Shiloh have been exchanged: That the Confederate authorities have never reported any prisoners in their hands at Belmont. It was supposed that Genl Grant had effected their exchange many months ago. The matter will be further inquired into." Fine condition. Eleven regiments from Iowa took part in the Battle of Shiloh and the men fought bravely. Out of a total of 6,664 Iowans that participated, 2, 409 were killed, wounded, or missing and many had been forced to surrender. By the fall of 1862, however, all troops from Iowa in Confederate hands had been exchanged. The men were sent to Annapolis, Maryland, and while there, some of the officers contacted Gen. Halleck, the general in chief of all Union armies, asking for permission to visit the nation's capital. Halleck's reply read, "You can come. Such troops can go any where: your indomitable courage at Shiloh saved the Army of the Mississippi from total annihilation."

Historic Identified 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle with Documentation

Lot 1005: Historic Identified 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle with Documentation

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $45,000 - $60,000

Description: Historic Identified 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle with Documentation Early production New Haven Arms Co., Henry rifle with 1971 notarized statement (from a family descendent). That states the rifle was originally the property of William Perry Finch of Farmersville, Indiana. Documents included with the rifle indicate that William Finch served with the 65th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. According to the National Park Service website, William Finch is confirmed as having served with the 65th Indiana (Company A) and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant before he was mustered out. The 65th Indiana mustered into service in August 1862 and was part of the Army of the Ohio from 1863 until it mustered out of service in June 1865. The regiment saw action in east Tennessee in late 1863, in the Atlanta Campaign in the summer of 1864, in the Nashville Campaign, including the Battle of Franklin, in November-December 1864 and in the Wilmington Campaign in 1865. As noted the 65th Indiana participated in the Atlanta Campaign, a series of battles that ended with Union forces capturing Atlanta. Under the command of Major General William T. Sherman, Union forces successfully invaded Georgia from the vicinity of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Confederate Army withdrew and was besieged in Atlanta which fell on September 2, 1864. Afterwards, the Union Army went off in two directions. The pursuit of General Hood's forces in the northwest known as the Franklin-Nashville Campaign, which the 65th Indiana participated in, and to the east with the famous Sherman's March to the Sea. The 65th Indiana lost 254 officers and enlisted men killed in action or for disease. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass gun metal receiver and buttplate. The stock is straight grain black walnut. This early production rifle was manufactured circa November-December 1862 and has the desirable early features that include receiver with alternative rear sight dovetail, straight follower cut in the receiver, small diameter brass follower, nickel silver half-moon front sight, serial numbered tang and buttplate screws and first style buttplate with rounded heel. The barrel dovetail is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The right side of the stock and barrel are factory fitted with a sling swivel and screw-fastened sling hook loop. Most Henry rifles have the sling swivel and loop attached to the opposite side of the stock and barrel but a few early rifles, like this example, are documented with the fittings on the right side. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight. The First Style marking has all serifed letters except for the word "NEWHAVEN" in the second line. The serial number, "1242" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock, on the inside of the buttplate across the top of the heel, on the shanks of the hand fitted buttplate screws and on the shanks of the two small tang screws. The lower receiver tang has a factory inspection mark that consists of a punch-mark stamped behind the rear tang screw. All the markings and serial number locations are correct for an early production rifle. The Henry rifle was the most advanced shoulder arm used in the Civil War. Most of the Henry rifles manufactured between 1862 and 1865 are believed to have been privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the best weapon obtainable. Henry rifles were especially popular with Indiana and Illinois soldiers serving the Army of Ohio or the Army of the Cumberland. The Ordnance Department purchased fewer than 1,800 Henry rifles during the war; issue was limited to the 1st D.C. Cavalry and 3rd Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiments. Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Co. Model: Henry Rifle BBL: 24 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 44 Henry RF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 1242 Class: Antique Condition: Good. The rifle is all original and shows the wear typical of a weapon carried in three major campaigns during two years of combat. The barrel has a dark patina with some scattered light pitting and handling wear on the edges. Both the front and rear sight appear to be original to the rifle. The barrel legend and serial number are sharp. The brass receiver and buttplate have an attractive untouched patina. The top and sides of the receiver, the upper side plate joints and adjacent areas of the receiver have shallow dents and scratches. There are a number of shallow dents in the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The buttplate has numerous light scratches and some patches of age discoloration. The hammer, trigger and lever have a mottled brown patina. The stock is good overall with scattered light handling marks. This is a good example of a combat carried Civil War Henry rifle documented to an Indiana soldier in a typical Federal Midwestern infantry regiment.
