Description: John Buxton - August 8 1780: Engaging The Shawnee Village - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - - - Image Size: 28"w X 21"h. Limited Edition Of: 550?.this Battle Took Place August 8, 1780 During The Revolutionary War Period. The British From Fort Detroit Were Supplying The Natives To Attack The Colonists In Kentucky And Elsewhere. The British Built A Stockade Fort For The Shawnee At Their Village, Which You Can See In The Upper Right Corner Of Image. Under The Leadership Of George Rogers Clark, The Men Of Kentucky Retaliated. They Moved North To Destroy As Many Indians And Villages As Possible While Hoping To Advance On Fort Detroit. There Were A Few Villages And Six Miles Of Planted Corn Along The Flatlands Of The Mad River Just West Of Today?s Springfield, Ohio. This Has Been Called The Battle Of Piqua. "the Scene Shown In My Painting Is About Mid-battle When Clark?s Men Had Attained A Hill To The West Of The Stockade. Their Six-pound Cannon Shelled The Fort And A Group Of Natives Filed Out To Face-off Against Clark?s Men." 13-year-old Tecumseh Was Said To Have Lived In This Village And Is Shown Holding The Dog. George Rogers Clark?s Cousin, Joseph Rogers, Was Killed At This Battle. He Is Depicted As The Caucasian Indian On The Right Side Of The Native Hut. The Engagement Was A Success For Clark?s Brigade, Who Destroyed Six Miles Of Corn, Disabling Winter Raids On Kentucky Because The Natives Needed To Hunt Game For Food.

SALVADOR DALI TRISTAN AND ISOLDE FACSIMILE SIGNED & NUMBERED GICLEE

Lot 1369T: SALVADOR DALI TRISTAN AND ISOLDE FACSIMILE SIGNED & NUMBERED GICLEE

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $180 - $320

Description: This Is A Limited Edition Giclee Titled "tristan And Isolde" By Salvador Dali. This Piece Is Facsimile Signed On The Lower Right. Pencil Numbered From An Edition Of 375. Paper Measures 9" X 14". Image Measures 12" X 7". Made On Thick Quality Archival Paper. In Excellent Condition, Comes Unframed. Comes With A Certificate. The Figures Of Tristan And Isolde Depicted On This Subject Were Originally Painted By Dali In 1944 As A Backdrop For The Ballet Bacchanale, Performed To Wagner's Music And Presented For The First Time In 1944 On The Stage Of The International Theater In New York. The Tale Of This Ballet, For Which Dali Wrote The Libretto, Began Before The War. At That Time That Title Was Mad Tristan. It Was To Be Performed In Paris With The Choreography By Leonide Massine, The Scenery By Prince Charvachidze, And Costumes On Which Coco Chanel Wished To Use Real Ermine And Genuine Precious Stones. The War Prevented The Production In Paris, And Later The Marquis Georges De Cuevas Decided To Stage The Spectacle In New York. "as With Everything Else," Dali Writes In The Secret Life, "my Mad Tristan, Which Was To Have Been My Most Successful Theatrical Venture, Could Not Be Given; So It Became Venusberg And Finally Bacchanale, Which Is The Definitive Version." The Ballet Is Favorable Ground For Dali To Put His Paranoiac-critical Method Into Practice With Happy Results. Unfortunately, Most Of The Time His Directions Were Not Followed Exactly In The Production Of The Scenery And Staging; His Ideas Often Seemed Too Difficult To Execute In Actual Practice, They Were Too Costly, And They Could Not Be Accepted Under The Security Rules Normally Applied To Theaters.

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Estimated Price: $380 - $475

Description: Scott Gustafson - The Alice In Wonderland Suite - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - - Image Size: 9"w X 11"h. Limited Edition Of: 4000?."creating A New Alice Look Was A Fun Challenge. I Was Happy To Combine The Traditional With The New, The Scrupulously Researched With The Fanciful. I Needed To Forget All My Preconceptions And Work From The Original Source Materials And My Own Imagination. For Instance, The Original Book Said Only That The Caterpillar Was Smoking A Hookah. I Took It From There, Adding All Sorts Of Middle Eastern Touches. "originally, I Designed This Image To Be Darker But I Decided To Shed More Light On The Subject, Especially When I Wanted To Delineate The Trail Of Smoke From The Hookah And Its Effect On The Surrounding Flowers. To Give It Even More Light And A Gentle Touch, I Painted Alice's Reflection In The Caterpillar's Coffee Pot. "i Incorporated The Emblems Of Playing Card Suits In Both Images To Further The Playing Card Theme That Runs Throughout The Book. I All But Hid Them In The Caterpillar's Coffee Table But They Are The China Pattern In 'a Mad Tea Party.' "i Particularly Liked Working On The Tea Party Because Most Of The Interpretations I've Seen Picture The Mad Hatter, March Hare And Dormouse Almost As Grotesques. I Wanted Them To Have The Same Charm As My Other Characters."

Description: James C. Christensen - Icarus Bound - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - - Image Size: 12 1/4"w X 14 7/8"h. Limited Edition Of: 950?."what You Probably See First In This Image Are The Beautiful Wings On Everyman. Next You Notice That He's Chained To A Pillar - And Then, If You Look Closely, You'll Spot A Key Within His Reach. I'm Trying To Suggest That We All Have 'wings Of Potential,' The Means To Do Or Become Whatever We Want. "when I Showed The Still-untitled Image To Some Friends, They Said It Reminded Them Of The Story Of Icarus. According To Myth, Icarus Learned To Fly On Wings Made Of Wax And Feathers. In Some Versions Of The Tale, He Flies Too Close To The Sun, Which Melts The Wax And Causes Him To Plummet Into The Ocean Below. In Other Versions, He Was Also Warned To Say Well Above The Waves Because The Spray Could Soak The Feathers And Destroy Them. "the Message Of The Myth Is Certainly Relevant Here. Although We May Fly On Wings Of Potential, We Shouldn't Do It Recklessly - Freedom And License Are Not The Same Things. We Need To Keep A Steady Course - And It Wouldn't Hurt To Draw Up A Flight Plan Before Departure."

German Over Under Bockbuchsflinte Combination Gun By Merkel

Lot 258: German Over Under Bockbuchsflinte Combination Gun By Merkel

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $4,000

Description: serial #24917, 16 ga. x 8x57JR, 25 1/2" barrels, top choked full, with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain about 98% later, good-quality blue. The frame is a bright pewter patina showing a very light cleaning. It shows sprays of loose flowing scroll with game scenes left and right of fox and ducks and roe deer running amidst a woodland backdrop. The classic style walnut pistolgrip stock and forend rate excellent as refinished. The stock features a left-side rounded shadowline cheekpiece and has a checkered horn buttplate and a smooth pistolgrip cap. Safety is non-automatic and the front trigger is a single set. The gun is sighted with a brass front bead, manually actuated flip-up rear sight and the rib has dual claw mount bases with 3/4" rings. The rings currently mount a Hensoldt Wetzlar Duralyt 2 3/4 x telescopic sight with post and crosshair reticle and excellent optics; the crosshair is slightly damaged. Lockup remains tight on this 1937-proofed Merkel that likely will perform well afield. (36520-1599) [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection] {C&R}

ONE OF A KIND ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH BY ARTIST AUBREY BEARDSLEY

Lot 93O: ONE OF A KIND ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH BY ARTIST AUBREY BEARDSLEY

by Wilson Fine Art & Antiques

August 3, 2014, 1:00 PM MST

Boulder, CO, USA

Estimated Price: $9,600 - $12,000

Description: LITHOGRAPH IN THE MANNER OF AUBREY BEARDSLEY; In 1892, Beardsley travelled to Paris, where he discovered the poster art of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and the Parisian fashion for Japanese prints, both of which would be major influences on his own style. Beardsley's first commission was Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory (1893), which he illustrated for the publishing house Mssrs Dent His six years of major creative output can be divided into several periods, identified by the form of his signature. In the early period his work is mostly unsigned. During 1891 and 1892 he progressed to using his initials, A.V.B. In mid-1892, the period of Le Morte d'Arthur and The Bon Mots he used a Japanese-influenced mark which became progressively more graceful, sometimes accompanied by A.B. in block capitals.[6] He co-founded The Yellow Book with American writer Henry Harland, and for the first four editions he served as Art Editor and produced the cover designs and many illustrations for the magazine. He was also closely aligned with Aestheticism, the British counterpart of Decadence and Symbolism. Most of his images are done in ink, and feature large dark areas contrasted with large blank ones, and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas with none at all. Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and grotesque erotica, which were the main themes of his later work. His illustrations were in black and white, against a white background. Some of his drawings, inspired by Japanese shunga artwork, featured enormous genitalia. His most famous erotic illustrations concerned themes of history and mythology; these include his illustrations for a privately printed edition of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, and his drawings for Oscar Wilde's play Salome, which eventually premiered in Paris in 1896. Other major illustration projects included an 1896 edition of The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope, and the collection A Book of Fifty Drawings by Aubrey Beardsley (1897).[7] The Peacock Skirt, 1893 He also produced extensive illustrations for books and magazines (e.g. for a deluxe edition of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur) and worked for magazines such as The Studio and The Savoy, of which he was a co-founder. Beardsley also wrote Under the Hill, an unfinished erotic tale based loosely on the legend of Tannh?¤user, published in The Savoy. Beardsley was a caricaturist and did some political cartoons, mirroring Wilde's irreverent wit in art. Beardsley's work reflected the decadence of his era and his influence was enormous, clearly visible in the work of the French Symbolists, the Poster art Movement of the 1890s and the work of many later-period Art Nouveau artists like Pape and Clarke. Beardsley was a public as well as private eccentric. He said, "I have one aim?the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing." Wilde said he had "a face like a silver hatchet, and grass green hair." Beardsley was meticulous about his attire: dove-grey suits, hats, ties; yellow gloves. He would appear at his publisher's in a morning coat and patent leather pumps[disambiguation needed ]. Tailpiece or Cul de Lampe, 1893 Although Beardsley was associated with the homosexual clique that included Oscar Wilde and other English aesthetes, the details of his sexuality remain in question. He was generally regarded as asexual?which is hardly surprising, considering his chronic illness and his devotion to his work. Speculation about his sexuality include rumors of an incestuous relationship with his elder sister, Mabel, who may have become pregnant by her brother and miscarried.[8][9] During his entire career, Beardsley had recurrent attacks of the disease that would end it. He suffered frequent lung hemorrhages and was often unable to work or leave his home. Beardsley converted to Roman Catholicism in March 1897, and would subsequently beg his publisher, Leonard Smithers, to ?destroy all copies of Lysistrata and bad drawings... by all that is holy all obscene drawings." Smithers ignored Beardsley?s wishes, and actually continued to sell reproductions as well as forgeries of Beardsley's work.[6] Beardsley was active till his death in Menton, France, at the age of 25 on 16 March 1898 of tuberculosis
