A companion pair of Victorian satinwood and marquetry library bookcases

Lot 517: A companion pair of Victorian satinwood and marquetry library bookcases

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

April 15, 2015, 10:00 AM GMT

Newbury, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £10,000 - £15,000

Description: A companion pair of Victorian satinwood and marquetry library bookcases, circa 1840, attributed to Banting, France & Company, of varying width, incorporating rosewood arabesque marquetry throughout, each moulded cornice above three banks of adjustable open shelves, each lower section with four frieze drawers above four cupboard doors with brass grille panels backed by pleated fabric and opening to adjustable shelves, on plinth bases, the first 250cm high, 248cm wide, 36.5cm deep and with the right side unfinished, the other 250cm high, 239cm wide, 36.5cm deep Commissioned for the 2nd Marquess of Bute. It is thought that these bookcases were probably made by Banting, France & Company for the Marquess' London house at 6 Whitehall Place which he used whilst in London as a Member of Parliament. Banting France & Co were established at 27 St. James St, London between 1813-50 and used various combinations of the name. They worked extensively for the Royal family undertaking commissions and restoration work at most of the key Royal houses including Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle. See G. Beard and C. Gilbert The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840 (1986).
