GARLAND JUDY: (1922-1969) American Film Actress & Entertainer

Lot 261: GARLAND JUDY: (1922-1969) American Film Actress & Entertainer

by International Autograph Auctions

December 6, 2014, 10:00 AM GMT

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £800 - £1,000

Description: GARLAND JUDY: (1922-1969) American Film Actress & Entertainer, Academy Award winner. An exceptionally early vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Garland and her two sisters, Mary Jane and Dorothy Virginia, the image depicting the siblings in smiling head and shoulders poses together. Photograph by Bloom of Chicago. Signed by Judy Garland in bold black fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image, 'To Dorothy from the Garland Sisters, Baby Frances' (her real name being Frances Ethel). Also signed by her sisters Dorothy Virginia ('Jimmie') and Mary Jane ('Janie') with their first names only in fountain pen ink. Extremely rare and desirable. Some light surface creasing to the edges and a small area of light dust staining to the upper right corner, only very slightly affecting Garland's inscription. Otherwise about VG The present photograph dates from 1934 when The Garland Sisters, who had been touring the vaudeville circuit for a number of years as The Gumm Sisters, performed in Chicago at the Oriental Theatre with George Jessel. Indeed, it was Jessel who encouraged the sisters to choose a more appealing name than Gumm after their surname had been met with laughter by audiences. There are several theories as to how the trio of siblings decided upon their new name of Garland, as adopted in the present signed photograph, although perhaps the most reliable theory was provided by Garland's daughter, Lorna Luft, who stated that her mother selected the name when Jessel announced that the trio 'looked prettier than a garland of flowers'. Shortly after the date of the present photograph, Frances was to change her name to Judy, inspired by a popular Hoagy Carmichael song, and less than a year later, by August 1935, the performing trio was broken up and Judy Garland went on to pursue a legendary career in entertainment. The lot is accompanied by a small original vintage photograph of the original recipient of the signed photograph, a fellow child actress named Dorothy Gray, and a photocopy of a newspaper article identifying Gray as one of Judy Garland's best friends.
