by James D. Julia

June 19, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Fairfield, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $2,500

Description: Which came first...the Phonograph Jumeau or the Edison Talking Doll?? The Edison version was marketed first and then the Jumeau version a few years later. Both were most ingenious creations from the latter part of the 19th Century however the Edison version was a commercial failure while the Jumeau version was quite a bit more successful due to its interchangeable records that were also more durable than the wax records of the Edison model. This particular example features an open mouth Tete Jumeau with fine bisque, blue paperweight eyes, and a fully jointed marked "Jumeau" composition body. Attractively dressed in an appropriate Bebe styled outfit with one record present. SIZE: 24-1/2". CONDITION: As stated above, bisque head appears to be free of any damage such as eye chips, hairlines, and/or cheek rubs. 49025-1 HJL

Bébé Jumeau Lioretgraphe Doll, c. 1895

by Auction Team Breker

May 30, 2015, 10:00 AM CET

50997 Köln , Germany

Estimated Price: €4,000 - €6,000

Description: Bébé Jumeau Lioretgraphe Doll, c. 1895 With bisque head, stamped in red "Deposé Tête Jumeau II" , fixed blue paperweight eyes, open mouth, upper teeth, pierced ears, original blonde mohair wig, jointed composition body with metal cover over chest, original finish and light "Bébé Jumeau, Diplome d'Honneur" inks stamp, dressed in antique pink silk and net dress, leather shoes and wired bonnet, height 24 in. (61 cm), crack on forehead and right temple/cheek – covered by wig, otherwise good. Housed in the doll's chest is the brass key-wind Lioret phonographe No. 1577, with "H.L." stamp, floating mica reproducer and 2 ¼ in. (5,8 cm) celluloid cylinder no. 1 ("Polichinelle") with original paper label: "Phonographe Système Lioret". – It was Jumeau's request to Henri Lioret (then a clockmaker) to produce a speaking mechanism for dolls that inspired his first patents for a phonograph in 1893. Lightweight and elegant in design, Lioret's mechanism, however, proved too fragile and expensive for use in a toy. Therefore the speaking dolls were not a commercial success at the time (and are correspondingly rare today). The "Merveilleux" phonograph in its own right came into being in 1895. Later in his career Lioret worked on sound for films; he died in 1938 at the age of 90. – The mechanism of this example is in good working order. A rare example of an historic early phonograph in toy-form. Start Price: €2800 (2–3/2–3)

Good working condition. - The clown nods his head and flutters his wings as he lowers the beetle in front of the moon's nose, causing him to cross his eyes and stick out his tongue in confusion! - The moon was a popular motif for automata-makers at the end of the 19th century, but the "Clown sur la Lune" by Roullet et Decamps and the "Lune Fin de Siècle" by Vichy were the most famous examples of automata featuring the full moon as a human face. This iconic image, along with Jules Verne's novels "De la Terre à la Lune" (1865) and "Autour de la Lune" (1870), may have been the inspiration for George Méliès's silent film "Voyage dans la Lune" (1902), where the moon is depicted in the same way. - Provenance: Decamps family collection. Accompanying the automaton is a letter from Cosette Bellancourt-Decamps (daughter of Gaston Decamps and proprietor of SARL Decamps from 1972 until its closure in 1994) regarding the history of this piece: "I, Cosette Decamps, certify that the 'Clown sur la Lune' was part of my family collection (Roullet Decamps)." - Its approximate date of manufacture is 1885/1890 for its mechanics, moon and body. The dress was later restored by the Maison Decamps according to the tradition ... The mould number, an important testimony to date the piece, is No. 324 according to our archives: mould directory written by my grandmother Henriette Roullet-Decamps "324 Clown Lune et Lune et Chapeau". - Literature: Christian Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", pp. 144 and 312. - Literatur: Christian Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", S. 144 und 312.
