Robert E. Lee Signature

Lot 49074: Robert E. Lee Signature

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: Robert E. Lee Signature "R. E. Lee" with transmittal letter by Mary Custis Lee (likely General Lee's wife, rather than his daughter). Lee's signature on a ruled slip (2" x .75") is in bold ink. Small pin holes exist around the signature, though none affect it. Mary Custis Lee's letter (one page, 4.75" x 8", Lexington, September 16, 1873) is simply addressed to "Sir" transmitting "an autograph of Genl Lee." Only weeks before her own death on November 5, Mrs. Lee was, apparently, running low on Lee's autographs because of the many requests for them, as she explains in this letter. The letter reads in part: "I send you an autograph of Genl. Lee this almost under protest for I have much constant applications for them. I shall be forced to decline in future for this is cut from a Bank Check & those are nearly exhausted so you will greatly oblige me by informing any of your friends who encouraged by your success may desire to make a similar application that I shall be much pained by the necessity of refusing." The letter, which bears only minor stains, has cleanly and completely separated along the folds into four pieces.

Lot 4636: "The Mountain Meadows Massacre"

by Holabird Western Americana

April 18, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $2,000

Description: with the life, confession and execution of John D. Lee, the Mormon. 64 pages. This edition has a portrait and very lurid full-page illustrations. This book is referenced on the Internet, but is not for sale in original version or a reprint. You are likely never to have another chance at obtaining this first hand account of this tragedy again. See photograph for cover issues. Very rare. The Mountain Meadows massacre was a series of attacks on the Baker_Fancher emigrant wagon train at Mountain Meadows in southern Utah. The attacks culminated on September 11, 1857, with the mass slaughter of most in the emigrant party by members of the Utah Territorial Militia from the Iron County district. The wagon train?composed almost entirely of families from Arkansas?was bound for California on a route that passed through the Utah Territory during a conflict later known as the Utah War. After arriving in Salt Lake City, the Baker_Fancher party made their way south, eventually stopping to rest at Mountain Meadows. While the emigrants were camped at the meadow, nearby militia leaders, including Isaac C. Haight and John D. Lee, made plans to attack the wagon train. The militiamen attacked the emigrants. Intending to leave no witnesses and thus prevent reprisals, the perpetrators killed all the adults and older children (totaling about 120 men, women, and children). Seventeen children, all younger than seven, were spared. Only John D. Lee was tried in a court of law. After two trials in the Utah Territory, Lee was convicted by a jury, sentenced to death, and executed by Utah firing squad on March 23, 1877. City: State: Utah, Circa: 1877
