YASUO KUNIYOSHI [by or after] - Oil on board

Lot 491: YASUO KUNIYOSHI [by or after] - Oil on board

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $10,000

Description: Yasuo Kuniyoshi [by or after] (Japanese/American, 1893 - 1953). "Still Life with Goblet and Flowerpots". Oil on board. 1949. Bears signature and dated upper right, recto. Apparently the original frame, dimensions 26" x 30." Overall condition is very good, with only minor chipping and flaking of paint. No repairs or in-painting, probably never conserved. Signature and date contemporaneous to the work itself. Ex-collection member of the Board of Directors, Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, New York, where Kuniyoshi studied and taught from the 1920s until his death. By 1927 Kuniyoshi's oeuvre had turned more toward a representational approach, featuring groupings of objects, and his still lifes of common objects are among his most sought after and recognized works. In our example, painted near the end of his life, Kuniyoshi continues to experiment, in this case with transparency in the glass goblet and the smoothness of his subjects, unlike some of his earlier "rough-edged" objects. He contrasts this with the solid ceramic flowerpots, this offset by the lushness of the drapery and the soft, muted colors. Image copyright © Visual Artists and Galleries Association (VAGA). Image size: 20 x 24 in. (508 x 610 mm). [23422] |4000| {R100}

Condition Report: Apparently the original frame, dimensions 26" x 30." Overall condition is very good, with only minor chipping and flaking of paint. No repairs or in-painting, probably never conserved. Signature and date contemporaneous to the work itself.

EVERETT SHINN - Oil on canvas

Lot 678: EVERETT SHINN - Oil on canvas

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: Everett Shinn (American, 1876-1953). "Ballerina Ingovar". Oil on canvas. c1922. Signed and titled, lower left. Condition: Original untouched condition. Several patches (see images). A few scratches in image. Unframed. Provenance: Through Ernest Lawson; Private Collection, Lake Forest, Illinois. Portraits by Shinn are rare and seldom seen, a little known aspect of his oeuvre. While he is commonly associated with lower-class urban themes, he was enchanted with the more glamorous aspects of urban life. Shinn was an American realist painter and member of the Ashcan School, also known as 'The Eight,' the youngest member of the group of modernist painters who explored the depiction of real life. He is most famous for his numerous paintings of New York and the theater and of various aspects of luxury and modern life inspired by his home in New York City. It has been pointed out that unlike most members of the Eight, Shinn was not attracted to art focused on ?people sleeping under bridges.? In fact, he loved the glamour of Uptown, fashionably dressed ladies, and above all, Shinn wanted to depict the excitement of the theater. Image size: 32 x 24 in. (813 x 610 mm). [25243] |12000| {R100}

A leading French Post-Impressionist, Paul Cezanne bridged the way from 19th century Impressionism to a revolutionary new world of 20th century Cubism. Both Matisse and Picasso are quoted saying Cezanne was the father of us all. Although his radical departures were under appreciated and even ridiculed in his time, Cezannes studies of visual perception, geometric simplification, and experimentation with complex fractured forms kept his style changing significantly over his lifetime. Paul Cezanne was an eccentric, solitary enigma, often working in isolation, removed even from his own family.
