AMERICAN 2-3/4

Lot 2136: AMERICAN 2-3/4" KING HOWITZER, 1793.

by James D. Julia

March 16, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Fairfield, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: NSN. 2-3/4" cal. This bronze tube cast in bronze weighs 60lbs. and is 17" overall. Cast into back ring 'D KING PHILADA AD 1793' is the maker marks of Daniel King who made cannon during the American Revolution and this model for our fledgling army to use in the frontier. This tube has an iron sleeve and casting flaws on bottom as can be seen in photographs that most certainly make this cannon a reproduction. According to a 1961 article in 'Military Collector & Historian' by Don H. Berkebile, states that like our cannon here "the sights, made from iron, appear to be an afterthought since the rear one is set into the breech reinforce in such a manner as to partly obliterate the word 'Philada'. All bear a number, on one trunnion, in Roman numerals." Our example here does not have Roman numeral as the five 60lb. original examples that are in government collections. Regardless, this is a fine, very early reproduction executed with great skill, now with good patina. PROVENANCE: Heritage Museum & Gardens Collection, Sandwich, Mass. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Casting flaws on bottom near back, otherwise a wonderful facsimile. 4-55449 JS174

EX SMALL ARMS SCHOOL CORPS SOPER, READING A SCARCE .577-450 (M/H) SERVICE-RIFLE, MODEL 'SOPER MILITARY', serial no 459, ref no 1523..

by Holt's Auctioneers

March 19, 2015, 10:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £1,000 - £1,500

Description: EX SMALL ARMS SCHOOL CORPS WEAPONS COLLECTION SOPER, READING A SCARCE .577-450 (M/H) SERVICE-RIFLE, MODEL 'SOPER MILITARY', serial no. 459, ref. no. 1523, circa 1870, with 33in. barrel signed 'W. Soper, RIFLE & GUN MAKER, READING, ENGLAND', block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, the side of barrel marked 'HENRY'S PATENT', the nocksform with Soper's trademark, serial number to front of breech, automatic opening breech-block marked 'W. SOPER'S PATENT' operated by a thumb-lever on the right hand side of action, central exposed hammer, walnut three-quarter stock, iron furniture, provision for clearing rod (missing) and bayonet lug on the front barrel-band, the whole re-blacked and woodwork re-finished, retaining its Weapons Collection identity disk Other Notes: The Soper rifle is one of the most interesting and controversial British firearms of the 19th Century. Patented by William Soper of Reading (patent number 3,637). This is the second model Soper rifle (the first being an underlever dropping block action) of the design submitted for evaluation to the Special Committee on Breechloading Rifles in 1868. According to Soper, his rifle was rejected because it arrived one day late. The rifle is operated by a lever fixed to the right side of the action adjacent to the trigger so it can be thumb operated with minimal disturbance to the shooter's position. When depressed the lever acts via a connecting rod to raise the breech block which is hinged to the right side of the body. The hammer is cocked by an internal tumbler rotated by the axis pin of the operating lever simultaneously with the opening of the breech. Further pressure on the operating lever actuates a sliding bar extractor. The breech is closed by lifting up the lever so dropping the block into a formed channel in the body. The breech block houses the firing pin and a transverse locking bar which enters a groove in the left body wall when fully closed. The hammer has a half-cock safety position, and when fully cocked can only be opened by first pressing a spring catch to the right of the trigger. It was with a rifle of this model that Sgt. John Warrick of the Berkshire Volunteers (and Soper's assistant) achieved 60 shots in 60 seconds at the Basingstoke Exhibition of 1870. We are greatly indebted to the Historical Breechloading Smallarms Association website for the above information

STADT BOZEN

Lot 826: STADT BOZEN

by Boone Shares - The Scripophily Center

March 28, 2015, 10:30 AM CET

2020 Antwerp, Belgium

Estimated Price: €400 - €800

Description: 11 January 1810 BOZEN. 5% bond of 66 florins. black. No 60. Folds and stained over much of the certificate. Yet, a very readable (in German) and a most interesting certificate of early date. This was a bond issued by the city of Bozen to finance its military requirements during the very turbulent Napoleonic period. Indeed, after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Bolzano became part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy. After the Congress of Vienna (1814-15), Bolzano returned to the Austrian Empire as capital of the Austrian Südtirol provinceuntil the end of WWI, when the whole area became part of Italy. Bozen is today Bolzano, chief town of the Bolzano province of Italy. A unique find.
