Thomas Nuttall, A Journey of Travels into the Arkansas Territory?.

Lot 105: Thomas Nuttall, A Journey of Travels into the Arkansas Territory?.

by Arader Galleries

December 6, 2014, 1:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: NUTTALL, Thomas (1756-1859). A Journal of Travels into the Arkansas Territory, during the Year 1819. With Occasional Observations on the Manners of the Aborigines. Philadelphia: Thomas H. Palmer, 1821. 8vo., (9 x 5 6/8 inches). (Short tear to page 61 just touching the text, light browning throughout, a few pale dampstains towards the end). Folding engraved map by H. S. Tanner from notes by Nuttall (one or two spots, clean tear at fold), five uncolored aquatint plates (one or two loose). Original plain buff boards, printed paper label on the spine, uncut (spine chipped with loss, boards loose). Modern beige cloth slipcase and chemise. Provenance: Bookplate of Edwin Stanton Fickes on the front paste-down; The Frank T. Siebert Library of the North American Indian and the American Frontier. First edition of one of the principal early travel narratives of the Arkansas- Mississippi region. Nuttall, a British-born Philadelphian botanist and ornithologist, accompanied three major exploratory expeditions in order to further his knowledge of North American species. The "Journal" relates the second of these trips, carried out in 1818-20 in the company of Major Bradford, along the Arkansas and Red Rivers in Arkansas, Louisana, and Indian Territory. The work is important for the accuracy of Nuttall's scientific observations and for his attention to the culture of the native populations, notably the Chickasaw, Cherokee and Osage Indians. Two appendices are devoted to the Native Americans: the first relates the encounters of Ferdinand de Soto in 1539-1543 with the (soon to be extinct) native populations of the Mississippi region; the second provides a history of the Natchez tribe. A third appendix contains meteorological data. The aquatint plates illustrating local landmarks are unusual for an American book: this graphic technique enjoyed only a brief vogue here in the 1820's, before being supplanted by lithography. Howes N299; Field 1145; Sabin 56348; Graff 3055; Wagner-Camp 20.

by MacDougall Arts Ltd

November 26, 2014, 10:30 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £500,000 - £700,000

Description: VINOGRADOV, SERGEI (1869-1938) The Belfry and Cupola of the Uspensky Cathedral of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery, signed and dated 1928. Oil on canvas, 91.5 by 73.5 cm. Provenance: Collection of The Winter Palace gallery, London (label on the stretcher). Russian Art, Paintings, Sotheby's London, 27 November 2007, lot 167. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Private collection, UK. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. Literature: V. Sinaisky, Pskovo-Pecheskiy monastyr', Riga, Tipografiya Aktsionernogo obshchestva "Ritm", 1929, illustrated. N. Lapidus, Sergei Vinogradov, Moscow, Belyi gorod, 2005, p. 45, illustrated. N. Lapidus, Sergei Vinogradov, St Petersburg, Zolotoi vek, 2010, No. 206, illustrated; p. 486, listed. The Belfry and Cupola of the Uspensky Cathedral of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery is one of an acclaimed series of paintings from 1928-1929 by Sergei Vinogradov, depicting the ancient Uspensky Cathedral of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery. The theme of tranquil monastic life against a background of ancient and majestic church architecture had always exercised a strong appeal for the artist. Several works from earlier in Vinogradov's career are devoted to pilgrims at Orthodox shrines: At the Chapel (1893), Beggars by the Church Wall (1899), and In the Monastery Cell (1916). After the revolution, travelling to America where he was taking part in an exhibition of young Soviet art, the artist took views of monasteries with him. One of these pictures, The Marfo-Mariinsky Convent (1922), was bought by the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Coming back from America in 1924, Vinogradov settled in Riga, where he met the distinguished professor of law, Vasily Sinaisky. In the summer of 1928, Vinogradov and Sinaisky made a painting trip to the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery, which, under the demarcation settlement between Estonia and Soviet Russia in 1922, was placed on the western side of the border, saving it from closure and ruin. For two summers, in 1928 and 1929, Vinogradov and Sinaisky worked on a book-album devoted to the Monastery, which contained reproductions of Vinogradov's paintings, including The Belfry and Cupola of the Uspensky Cathedral, which is presented for auction. The book, published in Riga in 1929, was very well received and became highly prized in bibliographical circles, winning great acclaim for its authors. The themes of the book were much in evidence at Vinogradov's personal exhibition of 1935, where, according to one review, "the pictures of the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery are most harmonious". Vinogradov painted the Cathedral several times, seeking out different viewpoints, but the picture offered for auction is undoubtedly his best version. The thread of time, reaching back down the centuries, is apparent amid the bright summer's day and the passing clouds. The viewers' gaze travels from the ancient white-stone bell tower, built in the 16th century, past the vestry and the green copper rooves and porches, upwards to the bright orange walls of the Cathedral with its resplendent blue domes, the brilliant gold of the crosses against the sky, and then to the sky itself. Vinogradov wrote of his work at the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery: "I always had a wonderful feeling upon entering the Monastery - all of the modern world, all todays fall away and the soul is filled with delight and awe." A postcard with a reproduction of the painting has been preserved, bearing an inscription in the hand of the artist's wife: "I sold this picture by my husband in London". Hence, presumably, its origin from London's The Winter Palace gallery.

Lot 36: Manuscript - Commentary on Idra Zuta by the Kabbalist Rabbi Asher ben Rabbi Yosef of Cracow - 16th-17th Century - Unprinted Composition

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

November 25, 2014, 7:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Manuscript, Kabbalistic commentary on Idra Zuta of the Zohar, by Rabbi Asher ben Rabbi Yosef of Cracow. Complete composition. Ashkenazi handwriting by several scribes from various times. Ancient writing from the 16th-17th century and replacements from later times. At the beginning of the commentary, the author writes: "I hereby begin to explain the secret of the Idra Zuta, from which you can understand the secrets of the Idra [Raba] and G-d's secret in chapters of Sefer Teruma, and if something will be difficult for you, ask again and I will explain the matter which you find difficult once more, but I know that you are a wise man". Rabbi Asher ben Rabbi Yosef, a Torah scholar and Kabbalist from the city of Cracow from the 16th-17th century, wrote a commentary on Kinot which were printed in Cracow in 1585 and in Lublin in 1617, and a commentary on Yotzrot according to Ashkenazi custom printed in Cracow in 1589, and a commentary on Yotzrot according to the Polish custom printed in Cracow in 1589. He also wrote Kabbalistic works as well as glosses on compositions on the Ari's kabbalah which begin with the initials ABYR = Asher ben Rabbi Yosef (see: Avivi, Kabalat Ha'Ari, pp. 508-509). He also wrote a book name Lechem Abirim on Shabbat and festivals which was lost. This item is a complete composition written by Rabbi Asher which has never been printed. The work was copied by several writers. The watermarks on the earlier leaves are from c. 1560 from which we conclude that part of the manuscript was written during the author's life, possibly it is the earliest among the author's manuscripts. [30] leaves. Approximately 21 cm. Overall good condition, spotting. Wear and tear to several places. New binding. Enclosed is an authorization by Rabbi Yosef Avivi.

Ex Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) collection, item 3/6; found Luxor in the 19th century, with old collection packet and label with inked inscriptions. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie excavated in Egypt for the Egypt Exploration Fund (EEF) from 1884 to 1886, and in 1894 founded an independent archaeological team, the Egyptian Research Account, which later became the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Petrie eventually rejoined the EEF and worked for them between 1896 and 1905. In 1892 he was appointed to the Edwards Chair at University College London, the first person to hold an academic position in Egyptology in Britain. In later life he began to work on Hyksos sites in Palestine and Gaza. He died in Jerusalem in 1942. Petrie changed the face of Egyptology in particular and the public perception of archaeology generally. He placed great emphasis on recording everything excavated from a site, and on the typological study of material culture. Petrie probably made more major discoveries than any other archaeologist, and his vast collection of antiquities is now at the Petrie Museum, London. He published a huge amount in books, articles and reviews. [2]

Kedushat Levi, by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdychiv - Slavita, 1798 - First Edition Printed During the Author's Life - Impressive Copy on Bluish Paper

Lot 14: Kedushat Levi, by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdychiv - Slavita, 1798 - First Edition Printed During the Author's Life - Impressive Copy on Bluish Paper

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

November 25, 2014, 7:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Kedushat Levi, Chassidic articles. Slavita, 1798. First edition, printed by the author. Articles on Chanuka and Purim (the chapters of the articles are called Kedushot), explanations on the Agaddot of Savi D'Vei Atuna, and other compilations [novellae on the Talmud by the author's father and son]. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdychiv (1740-1810, Encyclopedia L'Chassidut 3, pp. 17-23), one of the most glorious figures of the Chassidic movement who was famous by his cognomen "Advocate of the Jewish people". According to Chassidic lore, at Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's birth, the Ba'al Shem Tov offered his disciples to drink "lechaim" saying that a great soul has entered this world whose future task is to be an advocate for the Jewish people. He was born to his father Rabbi Meir Av Beit Din of Husakiv (Ukraine) a descendent of the Maharsha and a scion of the ancient dynasty of 36 rabbis. In his youth, he lived in the city of Lubartów and studied with the author of the Pri Megadim. At that time, he met Rebbe Shmelke of Nikolsburg who influenced him to become a Chassid and to travel to the illustrious Magid of Mezritch. From a very young age, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak served in the rabbinate of several communities (Ryczywół, Żelechów, Pinsk). In some places, he was pursued by the Mitnagdim because he was associated with the Chassidic movement. From 1785, he began to serve as the Rabbi of the city of Berdychiv, where he established an important Chassidic center and taught Torah to a multitude of disciples. In Berdychiv, he became famous as one of the foremost Chassidic leaders of his generation and was active until his death. Besides his piety and Torah knowledge, he was known as a symbol of Ahavat Yisrael (love of his fellow Jew) and as an advocate for all Jews including the sinners and offenders. Dozens of stories are told of his justification of every Jew in any state. These tales became inalienable assets of Chassidic lore and are the source of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's cognomen "Advocate of the Jewish people". The tsaddikim of his generation greatly revered and acclaimed him. Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg called him "my disciple in revealed Torah and my teacher and rabbi of the hidden (parts of the Torah)" and he used to say that even Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's mundane conversations were full of Torah secrets and yichudim. The Chozeh of Lublin said that he sets aside one hour each day to thank G-d for sending a soul like Rabbi Levi Yitzchak to this world and at Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's death, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov alleged that the light of the world was extinguished and darkness had ensued. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's poems and prayers are well-known including his prayer G-t Fun Avraham which many recite every Motzei Shabbat. This is the first edition of the book Kedushat Levi printed by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdychiv himself. The book is named after the articles of Kedushot on Chanuka and Purim which constitute the main part of the book. In 1806, the book was reprinted in this format in Zolkva during the author's life. Approximately one year after Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's death, his sons and grandsons published another edition of the book and added novellae on the weekly portions of the Torah from writings left by the author (Berdychiv 1811). Thereafter, the book has been reprinted in many enlarged editions. Later, a commentary on Pirkei Avot which was found in the estate of the Magid of Kozhnitz was printed as a third part of the book. According to the tradition handed down among Breslov Chassidim, some of Kedushot on Chanuka and Purim of this work were written by the Tsaddik Rebbe Natan of Nemirov, the famous disciple of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov at the time Rebbe Natan studied from Rabbi Levi Yitzchak in Berdychiv. The style of the Kedushot are discernable by their length and their style of writing which are different from some of the articles on the Torah. Torah scholars and tsaddikim testify that the segula of the book Kedushat Levi is very profound and it has the power to influence the reader with fervor and devotion of love and fear of G-d. They also say that just possessing the book eliminates harsh judgments and constitutes a protection from harmful elements. Rebbe Avraham Yehoshua Heshel - the Rabbi of Apta [in his approbation on the Berdychiv edition 1815] writes: "And certainly the merit of the author and the holiness of these books will provide protection and shelter wherever they will be...". Similar inferences were written by Rabbi Aharon of Zhitomir in his approbation of this edition. The rabbis of Mukacheve [in their approbation to the Mukacheve edition 1939] wrote: "It is known and accepted by the tsaddikim of each generation that the holy book Kedushat Levi has the segula to sweeten any harsh decrees or judgements". A complete copy on bluish paper. 30, 22 leaves. 19 cm. Good-very good condition. High-quality paper, whole leaves. Spotting. Tiny worm holes on the title page and on several leaves, several tears. Pasted on the title page is a strip of paper stamped with the censor's authorization. New elaborate leather binding. Stefansky Chassidut, no. 507.
