Joseph Botzleiner Judging from this clock Joseph Botzleiner was an excellent and imaginative clockmaker who had a shop inMunich at "Im Tal 5" in 1835. A mantel clock by Botzleiner is owned by the Münchner Stadtmuseum. He was probably a son or even a grandson of the Joseph Botzleiners who, according to Abeler, began his watchmaking apprenticeship on May 7, 1736 in Friedberg. Clemens Baron von Raglovich (1766-1836) Clemens Wenzel Freiherr von Raglovich von und zum Rosenhof (1766-1836) was a Bavarian General der Infanterie. Raglovich was born in Dillingen, the son of an army officer. He served as an officer of the Swabian Circle in the Army of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1767 he became Hauptmann and he took part in campaigns of the wars from 1793 to 1796 at the River Rhine and in 1799 in Northern Italy, where he was wounded in the battle of Novi Ligure. Meanwhile he was advanced to Secondmajor in 1786 and to Premiermajor in 1793, while serving in the 1st Kreis-Infanterie-Regiment of Graf Friedrich zuFürstenberg-Stühlingen. In 1799 he became Oberst. As a result of the Treaty of Lunéville, Dillingen became part of the Bavarian Kingdom and was taken over by the Bavarian Army in 1803. Raglovich took part in the campaigns of 1805, 1806/07, and after that was promoted to Major General and Brigadier in 1806, as chief of the general staff of the 1st Royal Bavarian Division in the campaign of 1809. In the battle in Russia he was wounded near Polotsk and repatriated. He fought in the Battles of Bautzen and of Dennewitz in Prussia. In 1813 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and divisional commander, and in 1814 he supervised the deployment of the Bavarian reserve army. In 1817 he became director of the topographic bureau, and transferred it to military institution. He initiated the foundation of the main conservatory of the army library. In 1819 he became member of the Bavarian Reichsrat. One year later he took office as Chief of the General Staff, and was advanced to General der Infanterie in 1823. In 1821 he became an honorary follow of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and in 1829 he became chief of the 2nd section of the War Ministry. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemens_von_Raglovich, as of 03/10/2015. Raglovich died in Munich, where he is buried in the Old Southern Cemertery. The Raglovichstraße in the quarter Neuhausen of the city is named in honor of him. Cond.: Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running.

William 'Pecos Bill' Shafter letter sends bullet from Spanish-Amer War

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $150 - $300

Description: "The enclosed bullet… taken out of a captured pistol… from the Span[ish] army at Santiago in July last" - SHAFTER, WILLIAM “PECOS BILL.” (1835-1906). American army officer who distinguished himself in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars; Medal of Honor winner, known by his nickname “Pecos Bill.” TLS. (“Wm. R. Shafter”) With an additional CS. (“Wm. R. Shafter”). 1p. 8vo. Governor’s Island, November 3, 1898. On Governor’s Island stationery. To Helen C. McDonnell. ----- “My dear little Friend: Yours of Oct. 20th at hand. I am very sorry I did not see you in Chicago, and hope your mother will bring you down the next time I am there, but glad you saw the procession. I have not a thing of any interest to send you except the enclosed bullet [not present], which was taken out of a captured pistol captured from the Span[ish] army at Santiago in July last. I got the pistol and upon receiving it found it was loaded, and this is one of the bullets. Remember me kindly to your father and mother, and believe me, Very truly yours…” ----- Purported to have been the first white male born in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Shafter enlisted in the army upon the outbreak of the Civil War, joining the Seventh Michigan Infantry, and earning the rank of major by the time he turned 26. In 1863, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and put in charge of the Seventeenth U.S. Colored Infantry, which he commanded through the rest of the war, at which time he was rewarded for his bravery and gallantry with the brevet of brigadier general. Rather than return to civilian life after the war’s end, Shafter remained in the army and was dispatched to the Mexican frontier to protect the territory from Indian and Mexican bandits. During his 10-year command of the Twenty-fourth U.S. Colored Infantry he earned the nickname “Pecos Bill” for leading his thirsty band to the Pecos River in Texas. His lengthy career saw him stationed in the Dakotas, Texas, Arizona, California, and New York. After receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor, President McKinley rewarded Shafter’s illustrious service record by placing him in command of the Department of California. The height of his fame came during the Spanish-American War when, as major general of volunteers, he led the expedition to Santiago de Cuba. The Fifth Army Corps landed in Cuba on June 22, 1898, at which point Shafter’s volunteers and the “colored” regiments -- the famous Buffalo Soldiers -- began capturing the hills surrounding the city where the Spanish were entrenched. The most famous of these battles was the bloody July 1 Battle of San Juan Hill which brought to light the exploits of Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Shafter laid siege to the city itself on July 3 and, despite the appearance of yellow fever amongst the troops, kept up the siege until the Spanish capitulation on July 16. The surrender effectively ended the fighting, but left an army of invalids suffering from tropical fevers for which Shafter was, unjustly, criticized. Nonetheless, he remained a hero of the conflict and enjoyed wide renown during his lifetime. Our letter mentions the large parade in Chicago on October 19, 1898, one of several such jubilees held across the country that included recently returned servicemen as well as President McKinley and his cabinet. “Victors in battles by sea and land, from jacky and high private to Major General and Admiral, and an army of the civic host, all led by President McKinley, Commander-in-Chief of the Army and the Navy of the United States, passed in review before the eyes of Chicago and the middle West yesterday. Their advance was timed to the music of martial airs, with their requiem undertone, and greeted by the music of a mighty chorus, in which a million or more throats spoke in one voice the people’s gratitude for victory, their praise for those who won it, and their loyal affection for him who guided and commanded all… Ten thousand marched or rode in the parade. How many people looked on nobody knows… Carriages in which were seated the notable guests of the jubilee crowded close upon the Presidential escort. General Miles and General Shafter, in carriages nearly opposite, passed so quickly that not everybody recognized them. General Shafter’s prominent figure brought him more clearly to public view,” (Chicago Tribune, October 20, 1898). Our letter was written while Shafter commanded the Department of the East from the New York Army headquarters on Governor’s Island. Of his assignment in New York, the Sacramento Daily Union quoted him as saying “I expect to remain in command of the Department of the East until General [Wesley] Merritt arrives from Manila. On his arrival I expect he will take command, and I will return and assume charge of the Department of the Pacific. I like California, and I want to make it my permanent home. During my command there I made many friends, and I like the climate and associations there,” (“Shafter Goes to Governor’s Island,” Sacramento Daily Union, October 3, 1898). Shafter did indeed return to California where he continued his army service until his 1901 retirement. The bullet which was conveyed as a souvenir with our letter most likely belonged to a Mauser C96, a German-made semi-automatic pistol employed by the Spanish during the war. Written on a folded sheet which is partially glued shut. Some surface loss to the paper affects one word. Minor staining and two small pin holes. Mounting traces on the verso. In very good condition. Accompanied by a clipped signature which suffers from cello tape residue, two small pin holes and mounting traces on the verso. Uncommon.

1916 Rising, Enniscorthy: an important group of medals

by Whyte's

May 9, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €7,000 - €10,000

Description: 1916 Rising, Enniscorthy: an important group of medals A group of four to Michael Sutton, comprising a 1916 Rising Medal, 1917-21 Service Medal, a 1966 Survivors Medal and a 1971 Truce Anniversary Medal; also his 1916 Veteran's card, Irish Volunteer's belt, a prison made hat, his Sinn Fein Rebellion Handbook inscribed to the cover with his name and his name marked in the text, his Irish National Foresters membership certificate and a photographic portrait of Michael Sutton in Irish Volunteers uniform printed on canvas. A very rare group from one of the few places outside Dublin that the Rising was effected. Other Notes: The Rising in Enniscorthy: The Volunteers, under the command of Robert Brennan, had taken over the town, surrounded the RIC Barracks, blocked the railway from Rosslare, and all main roads. When the British forces arrived on 29 April the Volunteers refused to believe their assertion that there was a general surrender in Dublin, and insisted on receiving orders from Padraig Pearse. The British under the command of local officers French and Howard (Wicklow) - who would have probably personally known many of the Volunteers - relented and arranged for Seamus Doyle and Sean Etchingham to be brought to Dublin to see Pearse on Sunday 30 April. On 1 May, the IV garrison surrendered. 270 were arrested, and the leaders were all sentenced to death but had their sentences commuted.

Simon Vissière was born on February 16, 1822 in Paris; he was a son of the jeweller Jean-Baptiste-Vital Vissière and his wife Adelaïde Burnod. Simon?s brother Bernard became a jeweller and bijoutier like hisfather. Simon Vissière was a pupil of Joseph Thaddäus Winnerl and Charles Auguste Berthoud. Around 1849 he still worked in Argenteuil and won a silver medal at the Industrial Exhibition in Paris. On January 24, 1863 he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour and in 1867 Vissière opened his workshop at Rue des Drapiers 31; he even set up a small observatory on the premises. There is also a known address at Rue de Paris 15 in Le Havre - Vissière probably lived there before moving to the Rue des Drapiers. Vissière was one of the first chronometer makers to experiment with non-magnetic metals for hairsprings and balances and received a patent for a chronometer escapement in 1867. His marine chronometers are of outstanding quality and at the World Exhibition of 1867 in Paris Vissière won a gold medal for his chronometer; other gold medals were awarded to Frédéric-Bruno Scharff, OnésimeDumas, Amédée-Philippe Borrel and Montandon Frères à Paris. Vissière probably also invented a chronometer with a two-day power reserve. After having finished his apprenticeship with his father, Ferdinand Adolph Lange?s oldest son Richard (1845-1932) worked with Vissiére among others; Théodore-Marie Leroy also was an apprentice and employee of Vissière. Simon Vissiere died on January 4, 1887 in Cannet at the age of 64. Source: http://watch-wiki.org/index.php?title=Vissi%C3%A8re,_Simon, as of 03/15/2015 Cond.: Case: very good, oxydized, worn.
