Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - Civil War Union General - Autographed Letter (ALS)

Lot 169: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - Civil War Union General - Autographed Letter (ALS)

by JG Autographs

December 6, 2014, 6:00 PM EST

Danvers, MA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,250

Description: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 - February 24, 1914), Civil War Union Brigadier General, authentic autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages (conjoined), November 18, 1899. A college professor from Maine, Chamberlain volunteered to join the Union Army and quickly climbed the ranks to brevet major general. He commanded Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role at Gettysburg. After the war, he returned to his home state where he served as the 32nd Governor of Maine and went on to become president of his alma mater, Bowdoin College. In a letter to Judge Whitehouse, Chamberlain writes, in full: "I do not know what I can say to you on receiving your letter of this morning but something like what I said to Judge Symonds, - that I feel as if it does not matter so much now whether I receive any office or not; for the true prizes of life and the lasting reward of any possible well-doing are in such recognition and friendship as are witnessed by your generous letters, and ensured by what I know of the hearts beneath them. You set before me an ideal which, so far as opportunity remains, I shall strive to attain to. I think it almost unfortunate that the reserve of our conventional customs forbids us to express our friendly sentiments fully except upon sad or supreme occasions so I have to pray that such may be far off between us._?? William Penn Whitehouse served as Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court, from 1890-1913. Joseph W. Symonds had served on the Court from 1878-1884. A Republican, Chamberlain was elected Governor of Maine four times for one-year terms, serving from 1867-1871. Republican Speaker of the House Thomas B. Reed, who had represented Maine in the House of Representatives since 1877, resigned from Congress on September 4, 1899. On November 6, 1899, Reed's private secretary, Amos L. Allen, was elected to complete his term. It is possible that Judges Symonds and Whitehouse had asked Chamberlain, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for heroism at Gettysburg, if he would like to be the Republican congressional nominee for Reed's seat in 1900. Measuring approximately 5.75 x 9, this letter is in fine condition.

The nomination makes special mention of his "coolness and military way of handling the situation" when Sandino sent a messenger to ask Hatfield's surrender. Hatfield's response: "Marines don't surrender. Go to hell." 2) F.J Heiberger U.S.M.C. Sword, 36 1/4 inches long, with a 30 1/2 inch blade etched "Miles R. Thacher" on the left side. Description: DESCRIPTION: Swagger stick commemorating the actions of the British Middlesex regiment at the Battle of the Albuhera, May 16,1811. The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own) was a regiment of the British Army. It was formed in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms when the 57th (West Middlesex) and 77th (East Middlesex) Regiments of Foot were amalgamated with the county's militia and rifle volunteer units. The 57th gained the name during the Peninsular War when, at the Battle of Albuhera on May 16, 1811 their commander Colonel Inglis had his horse shot from under him. Severely wounded and outnumbered by the French he called to his men "Die hard, 57th! Die hard!" The Battle of Albuhera was the principal battle honour on the Middlesex Regiment's colours. 1837 Martin Van Buren SILVER INDIAN PEACE MEDAL Julian IP-19 51mm Extremely Rare

Lot 385: 1837 Martin Van Buren SILVER INDIAN PEACE MEDAL Julian IP-19 51mm Extremely Rare

by Early American

December 13, 2014, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $16,000 - $18,000

Description: Indian Peace Medals"Martin Van Buren" Silver Indian Peace Medal Major Rarity1837 President Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal. 51mm. Small Size. Struck in Silver. Extremely Rare. ANACS Authenticated. Very Fine.Julian IP-19. Prucha 44. Belden 34. 51mm. Small Size Medal. Sharly detailed, Holed at top for suspension as usual, cleaned long ago and retoning with some moderate edge bumps and surface marks, from actually being worn. This was the so-called "small size" of which only 112 were struck in Silver by the United States Mint, and then delivered to the office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs between 1837 and 1839 for presentation to Indian Chiefs.Extremely rare, especially as a presentation piece, like the one offered here. This piece was certainly the prized possession of an Indian Chief and his descendants. Many original Indian Peace Medals were so prized that they went to the grave, being burried with their recipients. Therefore, the number of actual, authentic medals available to collectors is extremely small. The strong details on this medal actually surpass those on the only other specimen we've seen! A true museum piece which brings together a number of different disciplines - numismatics, history, Native American Indian studies, and politics - overall, an unbeatable combination. Accompanied by a Photo Tied Certificate of Authenticity from the American Numismatic Association Authentication Bureau. The only recent sale we could find for this medal was in Stack's Ford XVI Sale of October 2006, where an Extremely Fine example sold for $12,000. An important addition to any collection and it is well detailed for display.
