JOHN MARIN Woolworth Building (The Dance).

Lot 415: JOHN MARIN Woolworth Building (The Dance).

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 29, 2015, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70,000 - $100,000

Description: JOHN MARIN Woolworth Building (The Dance). Etching and drypoint printed in black on cream wove paper, 1913. 330x267 mm; 13x10 1/2 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2). Edition of approximately only 30. Signed in pencil, lower left (inside the plate mark), and inscribed "Printed by John Marin, Sent out by 291" in pencil, lower left (outside the plate mark). Published by Alfred Steiglitz, Gallery 291, New York. Though Zigrosser calls for an edition of 30, it is estimated that perhaps only 15 or so were printed. A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching, with selective wiping at the plate border, inked in the manner of a monotype, with very strong contrasts and with crisp, partially inky plate edges. Stieglitz (1864-1946) was a gallery owner and photographer who founded the famed Gallery 291, on Fifth Avenue, a pioneering New York institution that exhibited early 20th Century European art before it gained popularity in America. Stieglitz not only focused on the European avant-garde, but also fostered and propelled the careers of important American Modernists. Marin (1870-1953), renowned for his abstract watercolors and prints of landscapes and cityscapes (particularly of New York), was closely associated with Stieglitz. Their rapport began when Marin met Stieglitz's agent, Edward Steichen, while they were both in Paris in 1908 (Marin had been in Paris since 1905, making etchings very much in the style of James A. M. Whistler and hoping to establish himself as a fine artist). Steichen directed Stieglitz's attention to Marin's work, which prompted the galley director to visit Marin's Parisian apartment. Stieglitz was extremely impressed and the following year, at Gallery 291 in New York, he held an exhibition of Marin's works. When Marin returned to the United States in 1911, Stieglitz began supplying him with a yearly stipend that would support and encourage his artistic output. Even after Gallery 291 closed, Stieglitz continued to promote Marin's work and ultimately helped him attain critical acclaim. Marin's first major retrospective was held at the Daniel Gallery in New York in 1920. Stieglitz featured Marin's work in the famous "Seven Americans" exhibition at the Anderson Gallery, New York, and arranged another retrospective for the artist at his new gallery, the Intimate Gallery, in December 1925. We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Zigrosser cites only 5 impressions from the second state in public collections. Zigrosser 116.

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: DWIGHT WILLIAM TRYON (American, 1849-1925) Coastal Scene, 1887 Oil on canvas 10 x 29 inches (25.4 x 73.7 cm) Initialed and dated lower left: D. W. T. 1887 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Dwight Tryon was one of America's first Tonalists, and an influential artist and teacher who popularized the muted, poetic style epitomized by his marsh landscapes and quiet beach scenes, such as the present work of 1887. Born in Connecticut, Tryon developed his technique in France, where he studied at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and trained under Charles Daubigny in Barbizon. He returned to United States in 1881 and spent nearly forty years as an instructor at Smith College, eventually being named Director of the Art School. His atmospheric, Barbizon-inspired landscapes won countless honors, including gold medals at the American Art Association, the Carnegie Institute, the Munich Exposition of 1892, the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, and the St. Louis Expositions of 1904. The capitalist Charles Lang Freer was his lifelong patron, and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. now houses the largest collection of Tryon's work. His paintings are also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

Lot 472: Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

by Eternity Gallery

April 28, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $1,000

Description: Ancient American Carved Steatite Stone Bowl with 3 eagle handles; Height: 2 inches = 52 mm; Weight: 110 g; Condition: No defects, pleasant to touch; Provenance: Bought at Prehistoric and Historic artifact Auction in Ohio, USA. References: As with many American Indian arts, there were originally many different native sculpture traditions in North America. In the Southwest, Indian sculptors carved small stone figurines in animal, human, and supernatural shapes, usually known as "storytellers" or "fetishes." Further to the north, the Inuit ("Eskimos") carved ceremonial dance masks from wood and figurines from ivory and soapstone. Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism, which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates are subducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting. It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years. Historical Uses Soapstone is used for inlaid designs, sculpture, coasters, and kitchen countertops and sinks. The Inuit often use soapstone for traditional carvings. Some Native American tribes and bands make bowls, cooking slabs, and other objects from soapstone; historically, this was particularly common during the Late Archaic archaeological period.[2] Locally quarried soapstone was used for gravemarkers in 19th century northeast Georgia around Dahlonega and Cleveland, as simple field stone and "slot and tab" tombs. Vikings hewed soapstone directly from the stone face, shaped it into cooking-pots, and sold these at home and abroad.[3] Soapstone is sometimes used for fireplace surrounds and woodstoves, because it can absorb and evenly distribute heat while being easy to manufacture. It is also used for counter tops. A weathered or aged appearance will occur naturally over time as the patina is enhanced. Applying mineral oil simply darkens the appearance of the stone; it does not protect it in any way. Condition No defects, pleasant to touch; Low Estimate: 500; High Estimate: 1000; Original: Yes; Circa: 500-1500 AD;

DEAN CORNWELL (American, 1892-1960) Police Holding Cuba

Lot 68060: DEAN CORNWELL (American, 1892-1960) Police Holding Cuba

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: DEAN CORNWELL (American, 1892-1960) Police Holding Cuban Gangsters at Waterfront, The Saturday Evening Post story illustration, May 17, 1947 Oil on canvas 21-5/8 x 50-5/8 inches (54.9 x 128.6 cm) Signed lower right: Dean Cornwell PROVENANCE: Illustration House, Inc., New York, March 21, 2005, lot 37. Dean Cornwell's monumental and intricate Police Holding Cuban Gangsters at Waterfront, accompanying the 1947 Saturday Evening Post story "Night Boat from Havana" by Burnham Carter, is one of the finest from the period to come to market. As a story illustration, the painting exhibits Cornwell's hallmark expressive characters, from the shifty, Clark Gable-inspired thug hiding against a dock post in the foreground, to the wildly gesticulating pack of gangsters surprised by a policeman in the background. In fact, Cornwell used as models for these captured smugglers his artist friends: Frank Reilly, Arthur William Brown, Gilbert Bundy, Harry Beckhoff, and John Gannam. The stylistic elements of Police Holding Cuban Gangsters at Waterfront also point to Cornwell's training as a muralist: deep, saturated colors; flattened, tapestry-like patterning created from the intersecting rope lines; and a panoramic format, where the narrative unfolds in multiple planes. One of America's most notable muralists, Cornwell painted over twenty murals for public institutions and served as president of the National Mural Painters Society in 1954.

CHARLES WILBERT WHITE (American, 1918-1979) Harriet Tub

Lot 68093: CHARLES WILBERT WHITE (American, 1918-1979) Harriet Tub

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $60,000

Description: CHARLES WILBERT WHITE (American, 1918-1979) Harriet Tubman, 1949 Ink and pencil on board 30 x 20 inches (76.2 x 50.8 cm) Signed and bears date lower left: Charles White '49 PROVENANCE: The artist; Bob Moore, Los Angeles, California, gift from the above, 1962; By descent to the present owner. EXHIBITED: ACA Galleries, New York, February 12-25, 1950. LITERATURE: Worker Magazine, New York, Sunday, February 12, 1950, n.p., illustrated; New Foundations, A Student Quarterly, Spring 1950, cover illustration; B. Moore, "Charles White: America's Most Celebrated Negro Artist," Sepia 11:5, May 1962, pp. 5-9; R. Bearden and H. Henderson, "Charles White," A History of African-American Artists, New York, 1993, pp. 405-17. This work retains the artist's original wood slat frame. With pure virtuosity and attuned skill, Charles Wilbert White utilizes the techniques of hatching and cross-hatching to create this portrait of the noted abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman. As exemplified by the stylized structure of Tubman's hands and the humanity of her face, the image juxtaposes the overt stylization of his earliest work with his later, more delicate drawings of common people. During his earlier work with the WPA, White had explored similar historical subjects, most notably in his mural for the 1940 American Negro Exposition in Chicago and, three years later, in Contribution of the Negro to American Democracy at the Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). Later that decade, White would feature figures depicted in these works in individual or group portraits, some of which were presented at his first solo show at ACA Galleries in New York in 1947. Contributing to his complexity as an artist of social concern, his formative skills had been informed by the Mexican muralists and by his work with the Taller de Gráfica and later with the New York Graphic Workshop and The Art Students League. In this exquisite portrait of Harriet Tubman, a tattered map of the Underground Railroad hangs in the background as her clenched left hand rests upon a simple wood table. Her gentle but intense gaze and her right hand point upward, beyond the frame of the composition. As White was particularly politically and socially-minded during these years of artistic production, one can immediately identify the passion and intensity with which he illuminates Tubman's historical and personal significance.

Condition Report: Date of 1950 appears to be added later by another hand and retraced over the previous "49."The ink medium is in stable condition throughout and well adhered to the primary paperboard support. The primary support is a Bainbridge laminate structure with a fine western wove facing paper applied to the surface. The paperboard support has minor losses and has somewhat begun to delaminate along the edges and corners due to frame installation methods, handling, and abrasion over time; these areas of insecurities and regions of delamination were consolidated with wheat starch paste to prevent loss. The facing paper was somewhat severely darkened and discolored overall and part of the discoloration has been reduced through removal of the grime layer in surface cleaning. However, the discoloration due to the inherent nature of the paperboard darkening over time cannot safely be addressed. The paper core of the laminate paper board is acidic in nature and has begun to discolor, affecting the facing paper. In addition, long-term exposure to the environment without glazing has resulted in some discoloration to the surface. There are several regions of pressure sensitive tape residue along the edges and corners, which were reduced mechanically under the microscope. The small areas of remaining residue are at the extreme edge of the object and cover only minor areas of the ink image. The object is in good condition overall. Framed Dimensions 37.25 X 27.25 Inches

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Vincenzo Maria Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. Jean Harlow (born Harlean Harlow Carpenter; March 3, 1911 - June 7, 1937) was an American film actress and sex symbol of the 1930s. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivaled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world by the late 1930s, often nicknamed the "Blond Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde", and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died during the filming of Saratoga in 1937 at the age of 26. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.
