Lot 453: "Compromise Agreement" Proclamation - Kollel America Polemic - New York, Cheshvan 1896

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

March 11, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Printed leaf, the agreement reached at the meeting of Kollel America representatives and representatives of Va'ad HaKlali and gaba'im of Eretz Israel in America. New York, October 1896. Agreement and regulations reached "When we all convened together, the gaba'im who support Eretz Israel here in New York and the other large cities in America, with a committee which was chosen by Kollel America in the Holy City and their emissary R' Yosef HaCohen" . The decision reached in the agreement was to cancel the establishment of Kollel America and to give special conditions to the American representatives, by the "Va'ad of all the kollelim of the Holy City". 41 rabbis and gaba'im signed the agreement in print: Rabbi Ya'akov Yosef, the Rabbi of the Kollel; Rabbi Duber Zilberman; Rabbi Katriel Sarason; Rabbi Dov Ber Abramowitz a New York rabbi; Rabbi Yechezkel Shlang; Rabbi Shmuel Zvi Wein the Rabbi of Wiżajny; Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Elyach emissary of the Va'ad HaKlali and Rabbi Yosef HaCohen emissary of America. Kollel America was established in 1896, to support the poor immigrants from America who came to settle in Eretz Israel and did not receive "Chaluka" from the veteran kollels. The establishment of this kollel kindled many disputes in Jerusalem from the veteran heads of the kollelim, who were concerned lest this rescind the Va'ad HaKlali, whose income was primarily dependent on American donations. That year, Rabbi Shmuel Salant published an open letter, sent all over the Diaspora, in which he announced, "That the obliteration of the Va'ad HaKlali is the obliteration of the entire Yishuv". He was joined by various heads of kollelim who also opposed the new kollel. This agreement was written in support of Rabbi Shmuel Salant's approach. On the other hand, the Brisker Gaon the Maharil Diskin, supported the establishment of the kollel. At the end of 1897, the Maharil Diskin published his letter in which he wrote, "Kollel America was established with my consent". Only in 1901, was an agreement reached initiated by the Ridvaz (see Item 454), with the recognition of the rights of Kollel America to collect their own funds, under certain conditions. This document is an unsuccessful attempt at the beginning of the polemic to cancel the establishment of the kollel which was founded a few months earlier. This topic was the focus of a severe public polemic which lasted five years, from 1896 until the agreement (Item 454) was reached in 1901. Printed leaf, 30.5 cm. Good-fair condition, wear damages (restored) without damage to text and stains. Not recorded in the Bibliography Institute, nor by Singerman and Goldman.

March 19, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: The Teachers Institute of The Hebrew Union College. Graduation of the First Class at the Plum Street Temple, June 15, 1912. pp. 30. Single small puncture through upper margin of many leaves, title discolored. Recent wrappers. 8vo. Unrecorded. Not in WorldCat and not in the online catalogue of HUC.• Contains order of service, various sermons and closes with a prayer by Kaufmann Kohler, president of Hebrew Union College.During the early waves of immigration to the United States, Rabbis and predominantly European-trained male teachers provided religious instruction to youth in private settings, often in synagogues. When Rebecca Gratz established the Hebrew Sunday School Society in Philadelphia (1838), teachers were "appointed from among the young ladies" of the Mikveh Israel Congregation. These "teaching ladies" were unwed, well-meaning, untrained women who did their best to provide instruction in the local Reform Sunday schools. There was no profession of Jewish education in 19th-century America. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were few paid religious school teachers. Most were volunteers, and many of those were public school teachers, trained for assignments in general education, but woefully lacking in knowledge of Judaism. It became apparent that the young American Jew could not be educated in the same manner as years past. Thus, institutions for the training of Jewish teachers developed in major American cities, especially where there were large concentrations of Jews. The Teachers Institute of Hebrew Union College was founded in 1909 by Rabbi Louis Grossmann, successor to Isaac Mayer Wise as rabbi of Congregation Bene Yeshurun, Cincinnati.Cincinnati, 1912.

CLARENCE LAWSON (1909 - 1988) His Reward, Emmett Till.

USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CLARENCE LAWSON (1909 - 1988) His Reward, Emmett Till. Painted plaster, circa 1955-1960. Approximately 432x279x89 mm; 17x11x3 1/2 inches. Incised "His Reward", lower edge recto. Signed and inscribed "Emmett Till Was Hung in Mississippi - Black Man (Eyes Gauged Out)" in ink, verso. Provenance: the estate of the artist, Chicago; private collection, Chicago. Exhibited: The Flowering - African-American Artists and Friends in 1940s Chicago: A Look at the South Side Community Art Center, Illinois Art Gallery, Illinois State Museum, Chicago, April 7 - May 28, 1993; Whose Broad Stripes and Stars: Death, Reverence, & the Struggle for Equality in America, Betty Rymer Gallery, The School of the Art Institute, Chicago, December 17, 1993 - February 2, 1994. This haunting sculpture is the first work by this distinguished Chicago sculptor to come to auction. The plaster head or mask was Lawson's reaction and his monument to the news of the horrifying death of fourteen year old Emmett Till in 1955. From Chicago, Illinois, Till was horrifically murdered - beaten, shot and his eyes gauged out - for allegedly flirting with a white young woman, while visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi. His beaten, swollen face was widely seen as his mother chose an open casket to show the brutality of his killing - the funeral was attended by thousands and images of it were published widely in the black press. "His Reward, Emmett Till" is an important political statement and one of the most modern works by the suclptor Lawson. Clarence Lawson was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1909. From 1933-1938, Lawson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he became the first black artist to receive the prestigious James Nelson Raymond Study and Travel Fellowship. Upon his return to the US, he served in the Navy, instructing wounded soldiers in arts and crafts. Lawson's work was shown in a variety of arts institutions during his lifetime including the Art Institute of Chicago, Atlanta University, the South Side Community Art Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. A bronze bust of Russian musician and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was featured, with significant praise, in the 1951 National Competition of American Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lawson moved to Sag Harbor, Long Island in 1973, where he painted, designed and built his own house.

Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

Lot 472: Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

by Eternity Gallery

March 8, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $1,000

Description: Ancient American Carved Steatite Stone Bowl with 3 eagle handles; Height: 2 inches = 52 mm; Weight: 110 g; Condition: No defects, pleasant to touch; Provenance: Bought at Prehistoric and Historic artifact Auction in Ohio, USA. References: As with many American Indian arts, there were originally many different native sculpture traditions in North America. In the Southwest, Indian sculptors carved small stone figurines in animal, human, and supernatural shapes, usually known as "storytellers" or "fetishes." Further to the north, the Inuit ("Eskimos") carved ceremonial dance masks from wood and figurines from ivory and soapstone. Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism, which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates are subducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting. It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years. Historical Uses Soapstone is used for inlaid designs, sculpture, coasters, and kitchen countertops and sinks. The Inuit often use soapstone for traditional carvings. Some Native American tribes and bands make bowls, cooking slabs, and other objects from soapstone; historically, this was particularly common during the Late Archaic archaeological period.[2] Locally quarried soapstone was used for gravemarkers in 19th century northeast Georgia around Dahlonega and Cleveland, as simple field stone and "slot and tab" tombs. Vikings hewed soapstone directly from the stone face, shaped it into cooking-pots, and sold these at home and abroad.[3] Soapstone is sometimes used for fireplace surrounds and woodstoves, because it can absorb and evenly distribute heat while being easy to manufacture. It is also used for counter tops. A weathered or aged appearance will occur naturally over time as the patina is enhanced. Applying mineral oil simply darkens the appearance of the stone; it does not protect it in any way. Condition No defects, pleasant to touch; Low Estimate: 500; High Estimate: 1000; Original: Yes; Circa: 500-1500 AD;

Description: Benjamin Colman. A Discourse had in the College-Hall at Cambridge, March 27th, 1722. Before the Baptism of R. Judah Monis... to which are added Three Discourses written by Mr. Monis himself, The Truth; The Whole Truth; and, Nothing but the Truth. One of which was deliver'd by him at his Baptism. FIRST EDITION . Four parts in one volume. Four title pages. Several notes throughout in a contemporary hand by Isaac Townsend. pp. (4), 27; (2), 4, 6, 36; (2), 40; (2), 26. Browned and stained, lower blank portion of p. 27 neatly laid to size, expert repair to final title-page with portion supplied in facsimile. Contemporary calf, light wear. 12mo. Rosenbach 17-22; Singerman 15-18; Evans 2324; Sabin 14477• Author of the first Hebrew textbook published in North America ("A Grammar of the Hebrew Tongue," Boston, 1735), Judah Monis (1683-1764) was the first Jew to receive a college degree in America. Born in Italy to a family of former Portuguese conversos and educated at Jewish academies in Italy and Holland, Monis emigrated to New York around 1715, where he established a small store and taught Hebrew to both Christians and Jews. By 1720 he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, home of Harvard College. At that time, all Harvard undergraduates were required to study Hebrew. The assumption being that no Christian gentleman could be considered truly educated unless he could read the Bible in its original language. Monis was approved by the college as instructor of the Hebrew language - Harvard's first - but not as a Jew, since Harvard required all its faculty to be professing Christians. One month before assuming his post at Harvard, Monis converted to Christianity - a conversion that attracted widespread notoriety. Local Christian clergy expressed concern that Harvard's requirement that all its faculty members be of the Christian faith had in turn pushed Monis to an insincere conversion. In the present sermons Monis defended his conversion arguing he left Judaism out of religious conviction and not opportunism.Monis's life presents a particular case of how a Jew was viewed in colonial America's public life. He came to Cambridge, which had no Jewish institutions, to teach Hebrew to Christian students. Having chosen to leave a mature Jewish community in New York City he entered Harvard as a Christian. But the Christian community looked on him with skepticism. Both the Cambridge First Church as well as Harvard College records refer to Monis as "the converted Jew," "the converted rabbi;" and "the Christianized Jew."Boston, Daniel Henchman, 1722.

[Cushman, Robert] The Sin and Danger of Self-Love Described in a Sermon Preach'd at Plimouth in New-England

Lot 2: [Cushman, Robert] The Sin and Danger of Self-Love Described in a Sermon Preach'd at Plimouth in New-England

by Addison & Sarova Auctioneers

March 7, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

Macon, GA, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: Boston: Reprinted in the Year 1724. 1st Am. Ed. 6" x 4.2". [2], vi, 24 pp.; collates as per Evans 2519 (or, A-D4). Contemporary paper wraps (doubled, or two wraps applied to this copy.) Wraps soiled, title corner-chipped, early ink to title verso, A2 with small ink-stain near bottom, corners rounded, contents toned. ****** Very scarce first American edition of the first sermon to be preached in America. We find no record of this scarce edition ever appearing at auction. The work was first printed in London in 1622 and was printed for the first time in America in 1724. Later American printings would also appear (such as the 1785 Plymouth ed., which was the second American edition) and today are quite difficult to acquire as well. The present edition has been seemingly unobtainable until now. Robert Cushman was an agent for the Separatist Leiden contingent at the Plymouth colony which arrived there in 1621. He would spend two weeks in the colony in an effort to persuade colonists to adhere to their contract with the Virginia Company. He would die in England in 1625. The sermon itself is based up on I Corinthians 10:24: "Let no man seek his own: But every man anothers wealth."
