Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $12,000

Description: AutographsRare Autograph Quotation Signed by Frederick Douglass!FREDERICK DOUGLASS (1818-1895). Former Slave, American Abolitionist, Writer, Orator, Statesman and Reformer.October 20th, 1883-Dated, Exceedingly Rare & Important Autograph Quotation Signed, "Fred. K Douglass" penned upon a folded Octavo leaf, measuring 5" x 8", Choice Very Fine. Moderate even overall tone present to the blue lined wove period paper, boldly penned in deep rich brown ink, bearing an excellent vivid signature, measuring 1.75" long. Here, Frederick Douglass pens, in full: "John Brown saw slavery through no mist or cloud, but in a light of infinite brightness which left no one of its ten thousand horrors concealed. - (Signed) Fred. k Douglass. - Washington D.C. Oct. 20th 1883" Frederick Douglass knew John Brown through abolitionist circles but did not approve of Brown's intent to start a slave revolt, thinking that Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry would negatively influence public opinion against the abolition of slavery. However, years later, Douglass would recognize Brown's contribution to ending America's "peculiar institution". Newspaper clipping affixed to interior page announcing Douglass' second marriage: "The Colored Septuagenarian Weds a Young White Woman".

by Swann Auction Galleries

December 17, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: FELIX SCHWORMSTÄDT (1870-1938) HAMBURG - AMERIKA LINIE / VERGNÜGUNGSREISEN ZUR SEE. Circa 1904. 41 1/2x26 3/4 inches, 105 1/2x68 cm. Institute Act. Ges. Vorm. O. Troitzsch, Berlin. Condition B+: minor creases and abrasions in margins and along horizontal folds; tape on verso; bottom margin slightly trimmed. Paper. The concept of "Pleasure Cruising," as opposed to using a steam ship to travel from one destination to another, was originated by Albert Ballin, the director of the Hamburg America Line. The first pleasure cruise was a 57-day Mediterranean tour that left Cuxhaven in 1891. While it is impossible to identify the ship on which these elegantly-attired travelers are enjoying a leisurely afternoon, the ship in the background is the Deutschland, the Hamburg America Line's only four-stacker, whose maiden voyage was in 1900. Schwormstädt was a painter and illustrator who worked for both the Hamburg America Line and North German Lloyd Bremen. This is the German version. Passenger Ships front end-paper, Monarchs p. 165, Chemnitz 449.

Viola, "The Indian Legacy of Charles Bird King";Andrew J. Cosentino, "The Paintings of Charles Bird King (1785-1862), Smithsonian Institution Press, 1977Note:The subject of this watercolour is known from the lithograph published for Thomas Lorraine McKenney's (1785-1859) and James Hall's (1793-1868) masterwork book: "History of the Indian Tribes of North America with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs" renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The lithographic portrait plates are based on paintings by American artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862), who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington, D.C., to educate the American public and to preserve them in a series of portraits. Most of the original oil portraits were painted from life in the studio of C.B. King beginning in the winter of 1822 and 1842, the rest were copied from watercolours executed in the field by young frontier artist James Otto Lewis. It is recorded that a number of period copies exist of the over 143 portraits of Indian Chiefs and elders painted by King in the form of contemporary copies made by King himself or his students, such as George Cook, and many other unidentified artists. Herman J. Viola notes that a large number of copies were painted of the Indians as copies for the Indian delegates who sat for their portrait; to fill additional orders, or for record keeping purposes. The series of portraits executed for the McKenney and Hall project provide the only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century and has been described as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed". Since a fire at the Smithsonian destroyed most of the paintings in 1865, the published lithographs and the contemporary copies painted by various hands, survive as our only record. "An Osage Warrior" has become one of the most recognized Indian portraits executed for the McKenney & Hall project. It's image appears on the front cover of William H. Truettner's book: "Painting Indians and Building Empires in North America, 1710-1840". Charles B. J.F. Saint-Memin's original watercolour: "An Osage Warrior" on loan from the Winterthur collection, is included in the international exhibition of historic plains Indian art: "The Plains Indians Artists of the Earth and Sky" which began at the Musee du Quai Branly in France and recently opened at the Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City where "An Osage Warrior" occupies a full page colour illustration. It is also the subject most frequently reproduced and is subject of contemporary prints and giclee print reproductions.

Lot 28: "Desmoines House" print, 277/300 by Richard Schmid

by WorldCrest Auctions, Inc.

November 29, 2014, 10:00 AM CST

Arlingon, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $750

Description: The oil painting, "DESMOINES HOUSE" was painted by Richard Schmid, the Gilcrease Museum Rendezvous painter for 1986. This limited edition print of "Desmoines House" was issued in May, 1986 to commemorate the 1986 Gilcrease Rendezvous exhibition of works by Richard Schmid. This is number 277/300 of the signed, limited edition print. 17" x 26" Richard Schmid was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1934. His earliest artistic influence came from his maternal grandfather, Julian Oates, an architectural sculptor. Richard's initial studies in landscape painting, figure drawing, and anatomy began at the age of twelve and continued into classical techniques under William H. Mosby at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Mosby, a graduate of the Belgian Royal Academy in Brussels and the Superior Institute in Antwerp, was a technical expert on European and American realism. Studies with him involved working exclusively from life, at first using the conceptual and technical methods of the Flemish, Dutch, and Spanish masters, and eventually all of the late 19th century European and American painters. The emphasis in each period was on Alla Prima, or Direct Painting systems of the various periods. However, Richard's individual style and the content of his work developed along personal lines. In 2005, Richard Schmid was presented with the Gold Medal award from the Portrait Society of America during their annual portrait conference held in Washington DC. Richard is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate degree from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT. At ceremonies hosted by the American Society of Portrait Artists in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000, Richard Schmid received the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Richard Ormond, Sargent's grandnephew, presented the award. In May 2005, Schmid received the prestigious gold-medal award from The Portrait Society of America at their annual conference held in Washington, DC.

Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

Lot 434: Ancient American Carved Stone Bowl 3 eagle handles

by Eternity Gallery

December 7, 2014, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $1,000

Description: Ancient American Carved Steatite Stone Bowl with 3 eagle handles; Height: 2 inches = 52 mm; Weight: 110 g; Condition: No defects, pleasant to touch; Provenance: Bought at Prehistoric and Historic artifact Auction in Ohio, USA. References: As with many American Indian arts, there were originally many different native sculpture traditions in North America. In the Southwest, Indian sculptors carved small stone figurines in animal, human, and supernatural shapes, usually known as "storytellers" or "fetishes." Further to the north, the Inuit ("Eskimos") carved ceremonial dance masks from wood and figurines from ivory and soapstone. Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism, which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates are subducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting. It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years. Historical Uses Soapstone is used for inlaid designs, sculpture, coasters, and kitchen countertops and sinks. The Inuit often use soapstone for traditional carvings. Some Native American tribes and bands make bowls, cooking slabs, and other objects from soapstone; historically, this was particularly common during the Late Archaic archaeological period.[2] Locally quarried soapstone was used for gravemarkers in 19th century northeast Georgia around Dahlonega and Cleveland, as simple field stone and "slot and tab" tombs. Vikings hewed soapstone directly from the stone face, shaped it into cooking-pots, and sold these at home and abroad.[3] Soapstone is sometimes used for fireplace surrounds and woodstoves, because it can absorb and evenly distribute heat while being easy to manufacture. It is also used for counter tops. A weathered or aged appearance will occur naturally over time as the patina is enhanced. Applying mineral oil simply darkens the appearance of the stone; it does not protect it in any way.<br /> <strong>Condition</strong> No defects, pleasant to touch;<br /> Low Estimate: 500;<br /> High Estimate: 1000;<br /> Original: Yes;<br /> Circa: 500-1500 AD;

c 1781 Handwritten Eulogy, American Revolutionary War Hessian Mercenary Deserter

Lot 138: c 1781 Handwritten Eulogy, American Revolutionary War Hessian Mercenary Deserter

by Early American

December 13, 2014, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,000

Description: American Revolution1781 Eulogy Written for an American Revolutionary War Hessian Mercenary Deserter from Burgoyne's British Armyc. 1781, Handwritten Manuscript Eulogy, Written for an American Revolutionary War Hessian Mercenary Deserter from "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoyne's Bristish Army after Saratoga, Very Fine.1781-Dated Handwritten Eulogy for a Hessian Mercenary who was also a Deserter from General John Burgoyne's British Army, measures 8" x 12.5" with 2 pages, complete upon a fine quality wove period paper. Minor paper loss at lower corner tips far away from any text, folds and faint foxing. Apparently written and read to his local upstate New York Church members, as after his Deserting the Army at Albany, New York, Borch remained living in that area of America. It reads, in part:"Reverend Christian Borch was born at Berlin, Prussia. He came over to America with the Hessian troops in the revolutionary war. He was in the army under the command of Genl Burgoyne, who invaded the State of New York in 1777, with the British and German troops from Canada, by the way of Lake Chaplain, and was with the whole army conquered and made prisoners at Saratoga. By the capitulation it was granted to Genl Burgoyne, that He and his army should march as prisoners of war from Albany to Boston, and from thence be conveyed to Great Britain. On the march from Albany to Boston many of Burgoyne's soldiers deserted and refused to proceed on the march of the Hessian and German troops... among those who refused to follow Burgoyne to Boston was Mr. Borch. He left the British Army at their departure from Albany and stayed in that vicinity...". This Eulogy continues on to state that Borch had became a schoolmaster and a devoted Christian, married, etc. It concludes with a statement by the reader that there will be a sermon preached in a place called Magers Blachten in the center of Livingston in 1781.Overall, a well written, readable and clean document. Historic in its presented content as it clearly displays how, in certain circumstances, British Soldiers and their Hessian Mercenaries, would remain and settle new roots in America during the American Revolutionary War Era.
