[Medieval Manuscript] Leo Magnus, ca. 1000

Lot 115: [Medieval Manuscript] Leo Magnus, ca. 1000

by Bibliopathos

March 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Milano, Italy

Estimated Price: €6,000 - €8,000

Description: MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT SERMO DE PASSIONE DOMINI [Fathers of the Church]. Leo Magnus, Sermo De Passione Domini, [Italy, about 1000]. Single leaf of vellum previously used as a cover in a vellum binding (348x215 mm), handwritten in brown ink. Carolingian minuscule, text in Latin on two columns. Extremely scarce medieval manuscript dating back to the 11th century. It contains a passage of pope Leo Magnus' Sermo De Passione Domini, his homily on the Lord's Passion. The text comes precisely from the II and the III chapters of the LXV sermon and, as the work in its whole, deals with the death and resurrection of Christ, its meanings and the analysis of the roles of all the characters involved. The passage is the following, excluding the part within the square brackets that has been added for completeness: Sermon LXV, Chapter II [Transcursis igitur iis quae passionem Domini praecesserunt, quid documentorum habeat sacramentum paschale tractemus.

Condition Report: Slightly faded. The verso is illegible due to abrasion. Very scarce medieval fragment, handwritten around the year 1000.

ACTIEN-BAUVEREIN

Lot 736: ACTIEN-BAUVEREIN "PASSAGE"

by Boone Shares - The Scripophily Center

March 28, 2015, 10:30 AM CET

2020 Antwerp, Belgium

Estimated Price: €50 - €100

Description: 1 July 1870 PREUSSEN. BERLIN. Aktie 100 Thaler (Gründeraktie). black, buff. #20000. No 15877/14783. Constructed a 'Passage' between 1869 and 1873 to link the Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden in a neo-renaissance style. On March 19th 1873, the building was inaugurated by Emperor Wilhelm I and named after him. On the ground floor there is a 128 meter corridor for shoppers. Alfred Grenander rebuilt the Passage in the style of "Neuen Sachlichkeit". In 1943, following an air attack, the passage was nearly completely destructed. Nowadays it is the location of the Westin Grand Hotel. This very decorative share from 1870 shows a large vignette of the original Passage. A few pinholes, folds, lower right corner missing (outside printed part of the share), also two small repaired tears. One of the prettiest of all German pieces.

Peter Paul Rubens, copy after, The Virgin and Child

Lot 61: Peter Paul Rubens, copy after, The Virgin and Child

by Lempertz

March 18, 2015, 2:30 PM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €4,000 - €5,000

Description: This piece is painted after a work by Rubens currently kept in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, but which once belonged to the picture gallery of Sanssouci. In this depiction of the Virgin, Rubens in turn drew inspiration from a Virgin and Child (private collection, Brussels) by Barent van Orley (1495 - 1542). However, he replaced van Orley's interior with a view of a forest clearing. Like in the precursor, Mary is here shown standing behind a balustrade hung with an Oriental rug and turning the pages of a manuscript, a motif also used in Orley's work. The artist of the present painting adhered particularly strictly to Ruben's version when depicting the landscape in the background of this work, but has varied the still life in the lower right corner by replacing Ruben's composition of fruit with flowers in a glass vase. Like in the Berlin work, for which Rubens collaborated with Jan Brueghel the Elder (for the landscape and flowers) and Frans Snyders (for the fruit), this painting is also thought to have been a collaborative work between two artists. Pieter van Avont (1600 - 1652) has been considered as the author of the Madonna and Christ Child figures.
