Speaking of the film, Hayworth said "I guess the only jewels of my life were the pictures I made with Fred Astaire...and "Cover Girl," too." Ned Scott (American, 1907-1964)Born in Paris, France, Ned Scott became interested in photography at the age of 22. Soon after he joined the Camera Club of New York, where he met influential photographer Paul Strand. Invited by Strand to work on the set of a film in Mexico, Scott then moved to Hollywood to continue this career path as a freelance still photographer. Among the most notable films he photographed for are "Stagecoach" (1939) and "Long Voyage Home" (1941). In 1945, Scott signed a contract with Columbia Pictures, working with stars including Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, Humphrey Bogart and Janet Blair. He worked with Columbia until 1948, after which he became an entrepreneur in the publishing industry.

Vintage 1920's or 1930's Era Vincent Zito Caricature of JEAN HARLOW D. 1937

Lot 220: Vintage 1920's or 1930's Era Vincent Zito Caricature of JEAN HARLOW D. 1937

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Vincenzo Maria Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. Jean Harlow (born Harlean Harlow Carpenter; March 3, 1911 - June 7, 1937) was an American film actress and sex symbol of the 1930s. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivaled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world by the late 1930s, often nicknamed the "Blond Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde", and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died during the filming of Saratoga in 1937 at the age of 26. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

1920-30's Vincent Zito Caricature of Harry Richman Autographed by Richman

Lot 214: 1920-30's Vincent Zito Caricature of Harry Richman Autographed by Richman

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. This autograph is guaranteed to pass authentication or your money back. Harry Richman was an American entertainer. He was a singer, actor, dancer, comedian, pianist, songwriter, bandleader, and night clubperformer, at his most popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Richman was born as Harold Reichman in Cincinnati, Ohio to Russian Jewish parents. He changed his name to "Harry Richman" at age 18, by which time he was already a professional entertainer in vaudeville. He worked as a piano accompanist to such stars as Mae West and Nora Bayes. With Bayes' act he made his Broadway debut in 1922. He appeared in several editions of the George White's Scandals in the 1920s to acclaim. He appeared in the 1931 Ziegfeld Follies. He made his feature movie debut in Hollywood in 1930 with the film Puttin' on the Ritz, featuring the Irving Berlin song of the same title, which gave Richman a phonograph record hit that year. His film career was short lived due to his somewhat overpowering personality, and his limited acting skills. (Leonard Maltin wrote of Puttin' on the Ritz: "A songwriter drinks and goes blind - after seeing this you'll want to do the same".) This made little difference to his career as he remained a popular nightclub host and stage performer. Harry Richman died in Hollywood, California. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

1930-40's Vincent Zito Caricature of Gracie Allen Signed by Allen JSA Y31549

Lot 194: 1930-40's Vincent Zito Caricature of Gracie Allen Signed by Allen JSA Y31549

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: This caricature comes with a full letter from JSA. Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Vincenzo Maria Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie "Gracie" Allen (July 26, 1895 - August 27, 1964), was an American comedienne who became internationally famous as the zany partner and comic foil of husband George Burns. For contributions to the television industry, Gracie Allen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6672 Hollywood Boulevard. Burns and Allen frequently used running gags as publicity stunts. During 1932-33 they pulled off one of the most successful in the business: a year-long search for Allen's supposedly missing brother. They would make unannounced cameo appearances on other shows, asking if anyone had seen Allen's brother. Gracie Allen's real-life brother was apparently the only person who didn't find the gag funny, and he eventually asked them to stop. (He dropped out of sight for a few weeks, at the height of the publicity.) The inside cover of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THIS COVER IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

William Gaxton (née Arturo Antonio Gaxiola, December 2, 1893 - February 2, 1963) was a star of vaudeville, film, and theatre. Gaxton appeared on film and onstage. He debuted on Broadway in the Music Box Revue on October 23, 1922 and went on to star in such hits as Rodgers and Hart's A Connecticut Yankee (1927), singing "Thou Swell"; Cole Porter's Fifty Million Frenchmen (1929), singing "You Do Something to Me"; Of Thee I Sing (1933) with Victor Moore; Cole Porter's Anything Goes (1934), with Ethel Mermanand Victor Moore; White Horse Inn (1936); Leave It to Me! He and Victor Moore became a popular theatre team in the 1930s and 1940s; they also appeared in several films and shorts together. Although a fine vocalist, Gaxton's strength was his comic timing and he often requested songs of his be removed from shows in favor of giving him more time for comedic scenes. An example of this was the removal of "Easy to Love" from Cole Porter's Anything Goes . The song reappeared in the show 53 years later, sung by Howard McGillin in the 1987 Broadway revival.
