Lot 86127: Counsellor at Law (Universal, 1933). Half Sheet (22" X

by Heritage Auctions

March 28, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $2,000

Description: Counsellor at Law (Universal, 1933). Half Sheet (22" X 28"). The legendary John Barrymore stars as a successful lawyer whose life begins to fall apart. Father to bratty step-children, and married to a woman who is ashamed of his humble beginnings (played by Doris Kenyon), George Simon soon learns who his real friends are when an ethics scandal erupts, in this excellent drama directed by William Wyler. The cast is a who's-who list of Hollywood legends, including Bebe Daniels, Melvyn Douglas (in an early role), Thelma Todd, Mayo Methot (Bogart's wife), and Isabell Jewel. This is the first half sheet we've presented from the film, and it features a classic Barrymore profile image. Chips in the bottom corners have been restored, tears in the faces/border at the bottom left have been touched up, along with two tears in the left border. Fine+ on Paper.

Cleopatra (20th Century Fox, 1963). Six Sheet (83.5

Lot 86125: Cleopatra (20th Century Fox, 1963). Six Sheet (83.5" X

by Heritage Auctions

March 28, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $1,200

Description: Cleopatra (20th Century Fox, 1963). Six Sheet (83.5" X 83.75"). "Lavish" hardly even begins to describe this enormous production, which began life as a modest $2 million movie. However, by the time all was said and done, the cost ballooned to $44 million (including $194,800 for star Elizabeth Taylor's 65 costumes, the most ever spent on outfits for a single actress to that point), and involved thousands of actors and extras, and over three years of production. The result was one of the most visually spectacular films in history, and one that is still enormously popular. Richard Burton and Rex Harrison starred opposite Taylor as Marc Antony and Julius Caesar, respectively, and the film claimed four Oscars with an additional five nominations. This is the sensational six sheet, a massive poster for a big movie. Signs of light handling include pinholes, fold wear, crossfold separations, and a couple of small tears in the background. Howard Terpning artwork. Folded, Very Fine-.

The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). Window Card

Lot 86021: The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). Window Card

by Heritage Auctions

March 28, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $6,000

Description: The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). Window Card (14" X 22"). In 1930, what would become one of Dashiell Hammett's best known works was serialized in the pages of Black Mask, a popular detective fiction pulp of the day. An immediate hit, it didn't take long for Warner Brothers to see the potential in Hammett's story, especially as they were beginning to have success with their line of popular crime films such as Little Caesar (1931) and The Public Enemy (1931). Faithfully adapted from Hammett's novel, the film starred Ricardo Cortez as private eye Sam Spade, one of detective literature's greatest creations. When the studio tried to re-release the film in 1936, they were unable to obtain the approval of the Production Code, owing to such "lewd" content as Bebe Daniels' nude bathtub scene, overt suggestions of Spade's sexual involvement with female clients, and the inclusion of strong homosexual themes, like the suggestion that Wilmer the gunsel and Caspar Gutman are involved in a homosexual relationship. Although all of these elements were fine in the less restrictive pre-Code Hollywood era, when the Code grew teeth a few years later, such references and innuendos were enough to have a picture shelved. There the film remained until television brought it from the vaults fifty years later. Of course everyone remembers the John Huston directed film noir version starring Humphrey Bogart made ten years later but as movie poster collectors know, the rarity of posters from this 1931 version is legendary. This wonderful window card is the first copy we have seen from this film. It had a small corner chip off of the lower left and some grease pencil writing in the upper white imprint area. The poster has been washed and pressed. Fine+.

Lot 86490: What Women Love (First National, 1920). Norwegian One S

by Heritage Auctions

March 28, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $1,200

Description: What Women Love (First National, 1920). Norwegian One Sheet (25.5" X 34.5"). Annette Kellerman was the swimming sensation of Australia in the first decade of the 20th Century, but is most well known for advocating a woman's right to wear a one piece bathing suit. The popularity of the "Kellerman" suit was so controversial at the time, she was arrested for indecency in Boston in 1907 for donning the creation. Kellerman was a distance swimmer, diver, theatrical performer, mermaid, feminist, fitness advocate and an internationally acclaimed silent movie star. The aquatic goddess was often referred to as the "Diving Venus," as her measurements closely mirrored those of the Venus de Milo. A Heritage first, this is the Norwegian one sheet from the melodrama What Women Love. Artist Niels Pedersen Rohder brings water nymph Kellerman to sun-kissed life in vibrant, stone litho color. Left and right edge wear, small chips in the bottom right corner, and creasing in the left border are the only signs of handling detected. Rolled, Fine/Very Fine.
