NORMAN ROCKWELL - Original color collotype and lithograph

by Stanford Auctioneers

May 17, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,200

Description: Norman Rockwell (American, 1894 - 1978). "The Texan". Original color collotype and lithograph. Printed 1973. Signed in pencil, lower right. Light cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Very good to fine condition. Norman Percevel Rockwell was a 20th-century American painter and illustrator. His works enjoy a broad popular appeal in the United States for their reflection of American culture. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios he created for "The Saturday Evening Post" magazine for more than four decades. This image is also known as 'Gary Cooper as the Texan' and 'Movie Star Being Made Up', and was the cover illustration for 'The Saturday Evening Post' of May 24, 1930. Rockwell was impressed by his model, writing that "My model…was Gary Cooper. He was already a very well-known actor at the time. He posed for me in Hollywood for three days and worked as conscientiously as any model I ever had. Everyone on the lot was crazy about him, and I could see why." Arthur L. Guptill, 'Norman Rockwell, Illustrator.' In this image, Rockwell plays with the stereotype of the manly cowboy by showing a makeup artist putting lipstick on the Cooper. The thickly painted canvas reinforces the theme of cosmetics, and highlights how magazines strived to glamorize movie stars for their covers. Printed by the Jaffe Press. Published by the Circle Gallery Ltd. Image copyright © The Norman Rockwell Estate / © SEPS: Licensed by Curtis Publishing, Indianapolis, Indiana. Overall size: 28 x 22 in. (711 x 559 mm). He worked as Christopher Reeve's stunt double in Superman I & II and appeared in many Hollywood epics such as Batman, Indiana Jones, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, not to mention various James Bond films. His TV work included popular series like The Avengers, Dr Who, The Professionals, Poirot and Midsomer Murders. Occasionally credited as an actor, he also made Road Safety commercials.

The image dimensions are 48.3 x 39.4 cm and the sheet dimensions are 50.5 x 40.8 cm. George Hurrell (1904-1992)After his education at the Art Institute of Chicago, George Hurrell actually intended to become a painter, but he eventually began his photographic career in 1925, when he made a number of impressive shots of the artists’ colony in Laguna Beach, California. His photographs of the silent film star Ramón Novarro finally captured the attention of Norma Shearer and MGM, which lead to the offer of the position as chief portrait photographer of the production company in 1930. Hereafter he worked for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures and would also become one of the first persons, introducing the genre of glamour photography. Hurrell became famous for his skillfully staged facial features caused by light and shadows. Besides, he also developed his own techniques in the field of lighting and blur, whereas he was soon considered a master of retouching. Hurrell worked with icons such as Humphrey Bogart, Greta Garbo, Robert Redford and Rita Hayworth. Later, he also portrayed stars like Brooke Shields, Sharon Stone and John Travolta. His works were internationally exhibited in countless group and solo exhibitions. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Saint Exupery 1st signed US edition 'Wind, Sand and Stars' in DJ

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,600 - $2,000

Description: SAINT EXUPERY, ANTOINE DE. (1900-1944). French aviator and author best known for The Little Prince and Wind, Sand, and Stars. Signed book. (“Antoine de Saint Exupery”). 306pp. 8vo. N.p., N.d. The 1939 first American edition of Wind, Sand and Stars inscribed in French on the half-title to Mr. J. A. Allard “in very friendly remembrance.” An impoverished aristocrat, Saint Exupery pioneered international postal flight, first in Africa and, later, in South America. As a manager for the French company Aéropostale, he regularly negotiated the release of downed pilots who were captured by Moors, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honor. In 1926, his first novella, The Aviator was published in a magazine and his first book, Southern Mail, was published in 1929 followed by Night Flight in 1931, for which he was awarded the Prix Femina. In 1939, he published Wind, Sand and Stars, a memoir that recounts his life at Aéropostale, including the 1935 plane crash in the Sahara Desert and his dramatic rescue by a passing Bedouin. The French edition was published in February 1939 and the English translation, which differed substantially from the original, appeared in the U.S. later that year. Following Germany’s 1940 invasion of France, Saint Exupery again took to the skies, fighting with the French Air Force before France’s capitulation prompted him to seek exile in the United States. Two weeks after his arrival in New York he accepted the National Book Award for Wind, Sand and Stars, which had been bestowed upon him the previous year. He remained in New York until 1943, a period during which he authored Flight to Arras, Letter to a Hostage and The Little Prince. Despite exceeding the age limit by eight years, Saint Exupery convinced General Eisenhower to authorize an exemption allowing him to fly with an American military convoy to Algiers where he joined the Free French Air Force in the spring of 1943. He disappeared into the Mediterranean Sea the following July while flying a reconnaissance mission over the Rhone Valley. Much speculation surrounded the disappearance of France’s literary hero until 1998 when his identity bracelet was found by a fisherman. In 2000, some remains of his aircraft were located nearby, confirming that his plane had crashed south of Marseilles. Saint Exupery is scarce in signed trade editions. In dust jacket and in very good condition, with wear along the edges and spine and a moderately loose binding. The inside is clean and tight.
