1919 LA GUIRLANDE Pochoir Fol Amour BRUNELLESCHI Cupid

Lot 649: 1919 LA GUIRLANDE Pochoir Fol Amour BRUNELLESCHI Cupid

by Riverview Estate Auctions

January 1, 2015, 6:00 PM CST

Shakopee, MN, USA

Estimated Price: $25 - $35

Description: This is a group of two vintage 1919 LA GUIRLANDE pochoirs. 1919 LA GUIRLANDE pochoirs. From the article 'FOL AMOUR'. By UMBERTO BRUNELLESCHI and Jean Hermanovits. Two beautiful pochoirs from the 1919 French publication, LA GUIRLANDE (La Guirlande d'art et de la literature). A lovely festooned girl by Brunelleschi and secondly, a cupid who is in blindfolds with an arrow through his heart--this darling illustrated by Jean Hermanovits. Both have text on reverse. SIZE: Girl: 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" (4 1/2" x 7" plate size) Cupid: 3" x 5" actual size. La Guirlande was one of the most exclusive of the Paris fashion publications (edition size of only 800) and is quite rare as it was produced in 1919 and 1920 only with a total of 11 issues. Its literary editor was Jean Hermanovits, and the artistic director was the great art deco illustrator Umberto Brunelleschi. Umberto Brunelleschi: Born 1879 in Montemurdo in Tuscany, Brunelleschi studied in Florence and moved to Paris in 1900 where he soon established himself as a printer, book illustrator and costume designer. His most famous graphic works were printed using the pochoir technique of stencil coloration that enhanced his vividly colored images. He was a major contributor to many of the deluxe French fashion publications including "Journal des Dames et Des Modes," "Gazette du Bon Ton" and "Les Feuillets d'Art." Brunelleschi was also the artistic director of the short lived but significant "La Guirlande d'art et de la litterature" (1919-1920). The magazine employed other great artists like Barbier, Benito, Wegener, Zinoview & the Neopolitan artist Mario Cito Filomarino. In the 1920s he diversified into set and costume designs for the Folies Bergere, the Casino de Paris, the Chatelet and theaters in New York, Italy and Germany. Among his credits include many costumes created for the marvelous Josephine Baker. ****** We provide in-house shipping. Low shipping costs! Combine items to save even more! Click on the Shipping tab below for details.

Condition Report: Excellent, near mint condition with no damage, creases, dents or fading. Any tiny imperfections were original to time of printing and hand coloring.

RARE c1919 WWI Theatre Program Germany Third Army Cohan

Lot 456: RARE c1919 WWI Theatre Program Germany Third Army Cohan

by Riverview Estate Auctions

January 1, 2015, 6:00 PM CST

Shakopee, MN, USA

Estimated Price: $75 - $100

Description: This is a rare vintage circa 1919 theatre program from Germany from the 'Third Army Stock Company' Y. M. C. A. Part of the 'Over There Theatre League' and efforts with George Cohan as President, under the direction of Dorothy Donnelly. These officers and enlisted men were ministering angels that lightened the heart, naturally heavy from war obstacles. The play is Seven Keys to Baldpate, George M. Cohan's successful mysterious melodramatic farce. Staged by Harrington Reynolds. Starring Harrington Reynolds, Helen Scott, Eugene Mcgovern. Dorothy Donnelly is best known to the American play going public for her performance in the title of "Madame X." Long one of the organizers and leaders of the Stage Women's War Relief, Miss Donnelly was slated to go overseas as a dramatic coach and organizer of soldier drama activity as soon as war conditions permitted. Unfortunately her plans were subject to the same delays that unavoidably deterred the Over There Theatre League, but Miss Donnelly left on September 17, 1918, and spent in France and Germany almost a year of untiring effort which made her one of the best known and best loved figures in the American Army. March, 1919 - no fewer than 132 soldier shows, with a total personnel of 127 officers and 2656 enlisted men, were already playing in the Third Army. During March, these shows gave 2640 performances. They depended almost wholly on the Y for costumes, and any hour in any day you would find the office of the Costume Department full of dough boys trying on a soubrette or Pierrot or "vamp" or ingenue garbs and getting themselves pinned up. The Y head field coach, Miss Wenner, reported in March 16 additional soldier shows forming under her supervision. And under the personal direction of Miss Dorothy Donnelly, of the Y Entertainment Department, the Third Army Stock Company had begun its career. SIZE: 6" x 11". ****** We provide in-house shipping.
