THE PROPERTY OF MUMBLES RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB, SWANSEA, WALES An h

by Graham Budd Auctions

May 18, 2015, 10:30 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £15,000 - £20,000

Description: THE PROPERTY OF MUMBLES RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB, SWANSEA, WALES An historic New Zealand 'Original All Blacks' shirt from the tour of the British Isles and France in 1905-06, with fern badge and canvas overlay to the shoulders and upper chest and back, small areas of damage, leather neck line extending down the lacing-v The Original All Blacks, also simply known as "The Originals", were the first New Zealand national rugby union team to tour outside Australasia. They toured the British Isles, France and the United States of America during 1905-1906. Their opening game was against Devon on 16 September 1905 whom they defeated 55-4. Such was the surprise that some newspapers in Britain printed that Devon had scored 55 points and not the All Blacks. They went on to defeat every English side that they faced, including a 16-3 victory over English county champions Durham. They defeated the national teams of Scotland, Ireland and England and suffered their only loss of the 35-match tour when defeated 3-0 defeat by wales at Cardiff Arms Park. The 1905 All Blacks tour of Britain went on to achieve legendary status within the rugby world and New Zealand in particular. They scored 976 points and conceded only 59, and thus set the standard for all subsequent All Black sides. The tour also saw the first use of the All Blacks nickname and established New Zealand's reputation as a world class rugby nation as well as the famous black shirt becoming an international sporting icon. The present "Originals" shirt is believed to have been worn in the match v Swansea at St Helens Ground 30th December 1905, the last match in Britain before the tour proceeded to France.

Ernest Shackleton extramarital love letter signed

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $4,500 - $5,000

Description: "Polar Man" Writes A Love Letter Eight Days Before the Nimrod Sails for Antarctica: "This will be the last I can write till I do so from the ice" - SHACKLETON, SIR ERNEST. (1874-1922). British Antarctic explorer who came within 97 nautical miles of attaining the South Pole on his 1907-1909 expedition. ALS. (“Your Polar Man”). 3½pp. 4to. [New Zealand], December, 23, 1907. Written on four sheets of British Antarctic Expedition 1907 stationery to Australian actress Isobel “Belle” Donaldson. ----- “This on the eve of Christmas is the first chance I have really had of writing to you not but that many times I have sat down with the intention and desire to do so but always something came in the way or I could not write what I wanted to say for words written are poor things to convey one’s inmost thoughts and after our long talks and the time in Sydney they are doubly feeble and inadequate. There is so much that I want to say to you yet I cannot. If you only knew how glad I was to hear that things went well last night or rather Saturday night. You would have wired me even a longer one for I was thinking and wondering all the time how you were getting on. I was living all through the piece and yet that is only a small bit of your life. There is so much for you to see and do and go through that at times I feel anxious as to how you will do it and yet keep fresh and young. All these things concerning you are far more in my thoughts than you can ever think but I do so want to see you get on and all things go well with you. Life and all that goes to make up life is so very complex and so hard to understand that I am often inclined to let it all slide but the interest in [?] is too great. I am always thinking about you yet I cannot sit down and write when there are these hundreds of miserable business letters coming in. I am so glad you liked the flowers and I feel that you may think I had plenty of chance to write when really and truly I have not. I shall always always remember our days on the India and those days in Sydney and thus are only an earnest [sic] of the days that are to come in the future. It is impossible for me to explain in writing really what I mean and though this letter seems stilted and short I want you to realize that my thoughts are with you and that your success in life in all ways will be one of my most earnest wishes. In thought and companionship we came very near each other and this will always be in our lives. I was so glad to get your photo this morning. It is very good but I miss the blue of the eyes and that infinite changing charm that makes you what you are. This will be the last I can write till I do so from the ice. Will you remember me to Elsie Edwards and I am sending along the … now. Remember me to all and tell … I got his letter but am so rushed that I cannot answer. Tell him I will not forget him if I go North. Remember me also to Mr. Thornton. Now girl I shall always think of you & pray if my prayers are of use. I do wish I could see you now. May the New Year be good to you. Your “Polar Man” ----- Shackleton began his distinguished exploration career under the guidance of Robert F. Scott, in whose Discovery expedition he took part. In 1906, Shackleton began planning his own expedition, seeking sponsors for the British Antarctic Expedition and buying supplies, equipment and the aging sealing vessel Nimrod. After much preparation, the Nimrod set sail on August 7, 1907, while Shackleton, stayed behind and “turned his mind to the men who would accompany him. Four hundred had applied. As he sifted the letters Shackleton pondered his requirements. The men must not only be fit, disciplined and well qualified: they would need the ‘marked individuality’ common to explorers of the unknown – and they would also have to live together in a cramped hut, completely isolated from the world. Finding a team would not be easy. In the end only two of the shore party of fifteen had previous polar experience,” (Antarctica: Great Stories from the Frozen Continent, Allen et al.). Of his crew three were Australian, two New Zealanders and one from Tasmania. “Shackleton finally left [England], on the last day of October… He travelled by the overland route; across the Channel, by special train from Calais to Marseilles, there to catch the waiting P & O liner - in his case RMS India - through Suez,” (Shackleton, Huntford). It was on board the India, and notwithstanding his marriage to Emily Dorman since 1904, that Shackleton “fell passionately in love with a girl called Isobel Donaldson. It was more than just a shipboard romance… [during the expedition Shackleton named] a mountain after her. To this day, Mount Donaldson, overlooking Beardmore Glacier remains a memento of the affair,” (ibid.). Shackleton’s connection to Donaldson continued after the expedition safely returned from having nearly reached the South Pole, and in 1910, he inscribed to her a copy of The Aurora Australis, the first book written, printed and bound in the Antarctic. Only 45 of the approximately 100 copies are known survive. Donaldson’s copy was sold by Sotheby’s in 1970 and now belongs to an Irish collector. Recent scholarship suggests that he may have had at least one other affair during his marriage. On a voyage from South Africa to England in 1903, he met and became attached to Hope Paterson, but kept his feelings from Emily. In 1908, while leading the British Antarctic Expedition, he named a dome-shaped hill at the foot of the Beardmore Glacier Mount Hope in her honor. The explorer later sent a piece of rock from Mount Hope’s summit to Paterson (sold by Bloomsbury in 2011). Our letter was written just eight days before the Nimrod sailed for Antarctica on January 1, 1908. In addition to discovering the approximate location of the south magnetic pole, Shackleton’s party broke the record for coming closest to the southernmost tip of the world, a record that held until Amundsen attained the pole on December 14, 1911. Accompanied by the original, hand addressed envelope bearing a canceled New Zealand stamp and fragment of a red wax seal. Letters from this period and on this stationery are uncommon; a love letter is exceptionally rare, possibly unique.

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €16,000 - €20,000

Description: Oil on canvas France, presumably 1920s Serge Férat (1881-1958) - Actually Sergei Nikolaevič Jastrebcov, Russian-French painter and exponent of Cubism Signed ‘FERAT’ on the reverse We thank Ms. Anisabelle Berès for the scientific advice Dimensions: 73 x 91 cm Frame: 77 x 95 cm Good condition In the late 1910-20s Férat created many expressive still life compositions under the influence of Cubism in which he repeatedly arranges fruits and fish; his still lives fetch up to €68,000 at international auctions This painting depicts a still life with fish and fruits in predominant bright shades of blue. This composition does not show the stylistic features of Cubism so obviously anymore, Férat was also influenced by other stylistic tendencies at that time. However, he always remained faithful to the use of bright colors. Condition: Sporadic craquelure, small color flaking in the bottom, a somewhat greater loss of color (1 cm) in the top center. Otherwise over all of good impression. The image dimensions are 73 x 91 cm, the framed dimensions 77 x 95 cm. Serge Férat (1881-1958) Serge Férat, actually Sergei Nikolaevič Jastrebcov, was born in Moscow in 1881. In 1900 he moved to Paris with his partner Helene von Oettingen, where he studied at the Academie Julian. He quickly made the acquaintance with the artists of the avant-garde, among his friends were Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Alexander Archipenko, Léopold Survage, Max Jacob, Ardengo Soffici and last but not least Guillaume Apollinaire, who became a close friend and colleague. His work was always devoted to cubism. Since 1906 he exhibited at the Salon Indépendants and in 1935 at the Wildenstein Gallery within in the exhibition ‘Les créateurs you cubisme’, to name only a few. Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,920 - €2,400

Description: Watercolor on thin cardboard Austria, um 1920 Josef Stoitzner (1884-1951) – Austrian painter and graphic artist Signed lower left ‘JOSEF STOITZNER’ Sheet dimensions: 32.3 x 39.9 cm Frame: 37.3 x 44.3 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Vienna Characteristic composition by Josef Stoitzner, whose motives were deeply related to Realism and yet beared a modern sense in terms of the painter’s objective artistic approach; similar mountain landscapes fetch up to €9,000 at international auctions Condition: The watercolor is in good condition, consistent with age. The upper right corner of the cardboard is slightly torn. The sheet dimensions are 32.3 x 39.9 cm and the frame measures 37.3 x 44.3 cm.Josef Stoitzner (1884-1951) Josef Stoitzner studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna, from 1906 to 1909. At that time he also became a member of the Vienna Secession, where he would regularly have the opportunity to exhibit his works. After studying, Stoitzner was active as a teacher and later, in 1932, he was offered a lecturing position by his former academy institution. Parallel to his job, Stoitzner built up a large collector’s base, which he initially provided with Art Nouveau woodcuts. Stoitzner’s mature oeuvre included still lifes, landscapes and interiors that were not inspired by avant-garde movements, but unveiled his fascination for the Salzburg region. For around 20 years, Joseph Stoitzner’s works have been re-discovered by art lovers and the market. In 2010 the Salzburg Museum organized a great retrospective in favor of the artist.
