PHILIP GUSTON Untitled.

Lot 45: PHILIP GUSTON Untitled.

by Swann Auction Galleries

November 12, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: PHILIP GUSTON Untitled. Lithograph, 1966. 330x570 mm; 13x22 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 22/25 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by Hollander's Workshop, Inc., New York, with the blind stamp lower right. From A Suite of Ten Lithographs. A superb impression of this very scarce lithograph. Born Philip Goldtsein to Russian emigré parents in Montreal, Guston (1913-1980) attended the Los Angeles Manual Arts High School, where he became friends with Jackson Pollock (both he and Pollock were expelled from that school for a satrical pamphlet they created). Guston pursued a career in the arts that led him to the Otis Art Institute and a lifelong friendship with artist Reuben Kadish. Guston and Kadish toured Mexico in 1935, meeting Diego Rivera, and by 1936 had arrived in New York to work under the Federal Art Project, WPA. His first solo show at the Midtown Gallery, New York, in 1947 was followed by travels to Italy. When he returned to New York in the 1950s, he renewed his friendship with Pollock, as well as Adolph Gottlieb and Willem de Kooning, and began painting in a looser, more expressive style. Guston's lithographs from the 1960s reflect the imagery of his painting and drawings from this time (see lots 46-48); they seem to represent still lifes--like the present work--drawn with bold, gestural strokes not unlike Pollock's Black Paintings from the early 1950s.

Description: 6 July 1864 LONDON. 10% Debenture of £500. black. Large format, with folds and a little staining. Formed London, around 1860, presumably to mine in Italy (name and text of share), but in fact mined gold at the new alluvial discoveries on the Arrow River, Otago, New Zealand. In 1862 the sailor William Fox discovered gold in the Arrow River. By the end of that year over 1,500 miners were camped along the river and a small canvas town had grown up by the Arrow River. In 1863 the population was around 300. At its height the town (Macetown) boasted a school, a church and two hotels. By 1865 most of the alluvial gold had been extracted and miners left for the gold fields of the West Coast. The company disappeared from records by the mid-1860s. Description: Wood, cane, clay, plant fiber and spider websVanuatu people, South Maleluka, circa 1950Sculpture displayed in the men's house to ensure the well- being of the communityCane frame with over-modeling for the bodyPainted with black, white and red pigmentsMounted on modern baseHeight: approx. 142 cmGood conditionProvenance: Private collection, Belgium Large, expressive ancestor figure with decorative painting This ancestral figure was created around 1950 by the Vanuatu people, indigenous to the South Pacific. The sculpture has a cane frame with vegetable fiber paste over-modeling for the body and is decorated with three-color pigment painting. The head is possibly an over-modeled skull of an ancestor, the hair is of spider-web. Many cultures of the South Pacific see the head as the seat of the human soul. Thus some tribes keep the head of their lost ones as a relic in the form of these so-called rambaramp figures. The life-sized figures were only created for men of a high social rank and displayed in the men's house. Painted ornaments and patterns are intended to show the identity and status of the deceased. It was believed that the spirits of the dead could live on in these figures. The figure is mounted on a modern base. The figure is in good condition. The body shows cracks and minor losses due to the nature of the material. The figure measures approx. 142 cm in height.
