HEAD OF THE GODDESS GUANYIN

Lot 20: HEAD OF THE GODDESS GUANYIN

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

May 14, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €4,200 - €8,400

Description: Stone with colour coating. China, Liao dynasty (912 - 1125) A very rare and appealing example of a well-preserved head in the unmistakable Liao style* and also from the period. The oval concave facial plane offers narrow, curved and slanted eyes, a notably small nose and mouth, the latter embedded between cheeks and chin. A very dominant hairstyle with a rather vaguely rendered diadem. Enthroned on top of it - directly above the frontal red ribbon in the hair - the Buddha Amitabha (Amituofo in China), with a pittance bowl in both hands above his lap. He is the "spiritual father" of Guanyin, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The hair on the back is bound up into a spiral chignon. Partly preserved colour coating with red and green tones. Mounted on a black wooden base. HEIGHT 23 CM From an Austrian private collection

Description: Red sandstone. Ayutthya Kingdom (Siam), approx. 15th to 16th cent. Strong high-arched eyebrows and a corresponding hairline. Domed ushnisha with a large flame on top (fragment). The ears are intact for the most part. Remnants of a former lacquer coating that quite certainly carried a layer of gilding over it. Gracefully mounted on a quadratic red marble base with black sprinkles. Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €4,000 - €8,000

TWO ANIMAL-HEADED CREATURES FROM A JATAKA

Lot 364: TWO ANIMAL-HEADED CREATURES FROM A JATAKA

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

May 14, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €1,600 - €3,200

Description: Glazed ceramic. Burma, Bagan Period, approx. 12th to 13th cent. Very rare, up to three-fourths highly plastic ceramic panel with two figures. Noticeable here is the especially well-preserved glaze, as seldom to be found in early ceramic works! The piece comes presumably from one of the terraces of the main stupa in Bagan. Certainly one of the many depictions from the rich Jataka scenes (stories from Buddha´s early life, of which there were supposedly over 500, also births in animal form exist). Both creatures are glazed green, somewhat pot-bellied and carry animal heads, presum. of dogs. Above all, they are laughing merrily and look very alive, which is very well-crafted. The arms are raised over their heads, palms clapping. Their position is dance-like in movement, except for the apron they are naked, in one figure the breasts are at least suggested. Elegant mounting on acrylic glass. SIZE 48 x 33,5 CM, MOUNTING 60,5 x 42 CM From a German private collection

LARGE HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI

Lot 370: LARGE HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

May 14, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €12,000 - €24,000

Description: Bronze. Ayutthya (Siam) presumably 15th - 16th cent. A very rare superhuman sized head of an important museum quality Buddha, with distinct Sukhothai stylistic characteristics. The artistic heritage of the Sukhothai is graciously respresented here. According to historical records, the small kingdom existed from around 1250, after merely one century of independence became a vassal of Ayutthya, until fully annexed in 1438. Notable about this head is the increadible mildness arising from the inner piece of mind, which is touchingly conveyed here. A similar head, although slightly larger and dated Sukhothai 14th to early 15th cent., is in the Bangkok National Museum*. The typical aquiline nose, the soft eyebrow arches running into it or the contoured mouth with raised corners. The contour of the eyebrows is rather mild on this head and also the chin has a less pronounced contour. The curved eyelids are remarkably sensitive and showcase impressive craftsmanship. Typical for the Sukhothai is the ovoid elongation, which widens to the top. The tall clear forehead continues into a sizable part of the head which is covered by hair. The many locks are clockwise spinning spirals, the ushnisha is of medium size and the ketumala on top broken off. Judging by the damage, it must have been a hefty break. A short part of the right ear is also missing. The common breakage around the lower neck has been straightend - the trivali are still intact. Overall good condition, the face and scalp with locks enterily preserved. Brown and red patina with numerous green areas. Traces show that it was once gilded, mainly around the left eye. Mounted on a black veneered wooden base. HEIGHT HEAD 43 CM, TOTAL HEIGHT 54 CM * Illustrated on page 169 of „Das Heilige Bildnis", Museum for East Asian Art, Cologne 1979 From an old German private collection
