Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Excellent, showing only minor handling marks on the pipe overall. Some light wear is present on the case, concentrated along the edges, with the lining in very good condition. A top quality piece in unsmoked condition, which would make a prime addition to an advanced meerschaum collection.

Historic Stag Horn Accented Hardwood Tobacco Chest, Marked as a Gift from Nazi Labor Chief Robert Ley to SS Chief Heinrich Himmler

Lot 1528: Historic Stag Horn Accented Hardwood Tobacco Chest, Marked as a Gift from Nazi Labor Chief Robert Ley to SS Chief Heinrich Himmler

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $12,000 - $18,000

Description: Historic Stag Horn Accented Hardwood Tobacco Chest, Marked as a Gift from Nazi Labor Chief Robert Ley to SS Chief Heinrich Himmler Measuring 14 inches wide, 7 1/2 inches tall and 8 inches deep, this chest is constructed from hardwood that has been shaped and carved to simulate an iron-banded rough hewn chest in the German folk art style, with stag horn accents and a set of four short stag feet. Each side features a stag handle with the center carved into a one inch long bear's head, and the lid has a golden Nazi eagle flanked by gold "H" on a silver oval with an oak leaf engraved gold border inside a stag panel. The interior is divided into a pair of lead-paneled boxes with solid lids and horn handles, and the lid is lined with red velvet, bearing a plaque engraved "UNSEREM REICHSFUHRER SS/MEINEM LIEBEN PARTEIGENOSSEN/Heinrich Himmler/ IN HERZLICHER VERBUNDHEIT/DR. ROBERT LEY 7. OKT. 1938" (Our Reichsfuhrer-SS, my beloved party comrade... In heartfelt solidarity...). A World War One aerial artillery spotter with a doctorate in chemistry, Ley joined the Nazi Party in 1924, angered by the French occupation of the Rheinland and lured in by the transcripts of Hitler's testimony at his trial for the Beer Hall Putsch. While sympathetic to the more socialist faction of the Party, he sided with Hitler in everything, which gave him a certain immunity to criticism for his erratic and unstable behavior. Said behavior, speculated by some historians to be the result of a brain injury suffered when shot down by the French during the Great War, included a large quantity of drunkenness, womanizing and graft. When he was made head of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labor Front), a Nazi-organized trade union that collected dues from every working man in the country, the graft became quite extreme, using union dues to pay for an assortment of real estate, cars, and a private train. Among Ley's brain children was Kraft dursch Freude (Strength through Joy), a recreational organization for German laborers, and the "KdF Mobile", better known as the Volkswagon, an abortive plan to sell cars to factory workers on an installment plan; 340,000 workers paid in, no cars were delivered. While his importance waned when Organization Todt displaced the DAF as chief labor organizer, 1938 saw Ley in his prime of power and influence, and fanciful gifts to other leading members of the Nazi Party would be well within his means. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine overall. A few sections of black filler used to cover the screws holding the stag on have chipped away, a few mended cracks are present in the front corners, and light handling marks are visible overall. A pair of cracks are forming at the rear, one in each corner where the sides interface with the back, and a few other smaller cracks and splits are visible at the seams. The lid plaque is very good, with a mixed aged patina on the silver. The inner lining is good, with the handles glued in place and some bending of the lids. Overall a fine emulation of an antique Germanic chest, attributed to two of the top men in pre-World War II Nazi Germany

Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximi

Lot 3346: Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximi

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 26, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $32,500 - $45,000

Description: Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria Produced by an unknown Damascus smith, this sword may be the finest example of the German huntsmen sidearm yet to come up for sale at our auction. A standard piece of equipment from the days of crossbows and spears well into the gunpowder age, the hunting sword was the tool of choice to give a clean end to a wounded animal, and could well be the hunters final line of defense against an enraged or cornered animal, an especially prominent danger during boar hunts. While the professional hunters who would accompany royal parties favored clean, businesslike swords, noblemen who joined or hosted those hunts needed to put forth a good face to their peers and would pay through the nose for a sword that would both get the job done and let them not get shown up by their colleagues. Measuring 33 1/2 inches overall, the core of the weapon is a 28 inch spear point Damascus blade which is fitted with a 5 1/2 inch false edge, wide single fullers and a narrow full length tang which has been fitted from the pommel down to the sheath tip with fine silver, much of it gold washed for engraving contrast and all of it bearing the repeating hallmarks of "BI" and "13". Additional gold highlighting and engraving are present on the blade with both fullers decorated with a 7 1/2 inch scene of a grotesque dragon head breathing scroll foliate fire, and a hunting dog pursuing a wild hare through the flames, and both sides of the ricasso have a 3 1/4 inch long scene of a pair of hunting dogs bringing down prey in the woods, a boar on the left and a stag on the right. The clamshell languet is equipped with a green felt pad and an extended lip to protect the scabbard throat and keep moisture out of the scabbard when sheathed. Measuring nearly 3 inches across, the face of the languet is decorated with a deeply sculpted and gold backwash rendering of a scene from mythology, the death of the hunter Actaeon. Noted by the Greeks as one of the great mythological hunters, stories of his death varied in the setup, but the ending was always the same; he transgresses against Artemis, goddess of the hunt, who transforms him into a stag and watches as he is torn to shreds by his own personally trained pack of hunting dogs. One variation, where Actaeon happened upon Artemis as she bathed in a spring and made advances the virgin goddess found intolerable, is depicted here with the goddess wearing the crescent moon as a crown and turning away from the hunter to hide her naked form, while the head and forelimbs of a stag poke out of the huntsmen clothing, a hunting dog near his still-human legs. The choice of this scene is open to speculation; hubris was a common thread in Actaeon stories, and it may have been meant as a reminder to a confident man that the hunt was not without danger. Smaller scenes of comparable detail and depth are present all over the hilt with a large rabbit and a wheel lock-equipped hunter resting with his dog on the sides of the counter-guard, an alert fox and a huntsman holding his dog by the scruff of the neck on the knuckleguard, and a mountain goat and a standing bear on the grip, as well as a sculpted grotesque face on the rear quillion and a dragon head on the base of the knuckleguard. A pair of stag horn panels are mounted to the grip, each fitted with a set of three silver clamshell ornaments. The sheath is fine brown leather with sculpted and gold washed scroll designs on the throat, suspension band and tip. A small utility knife tucks into a pocket in the front of the throat, concealed by the languet, which measures 8 1/2 inches long with a 5 inch clip point blade, silver furniture engraved and gold embellished to match the rest of the set (sans hallmarks), and a pair of horn grips secured with hollow brass rivets. The rear of the throat is engraved with the coat of arms of Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria and Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, flanked with cherub supporters and topped with the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor. A founding member of the Catholic League, a coalition of German states arranged against the pro-Lutheran League of Evangelical Union, Maximilian was a major participant in the Thirty Years War and in 1621 he would receive the title of Elector and the territory of the Upper Palatinate which were stripped from his cousin Frederick V after the Bohemian uprising. This absorption of land and title led to the reconfiguration of the Duke's coat of arms as seen on this scabbard, which would remain constant until the formation of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine. The blade shows a well aged gray steel patina with a few light nicks on the edge and the engraving showing crisp, well detailed lines and over 90% of the original gold. The silver components show areas of near-black antique patina and lighter areas of rubbing with the high spots on the sculpted decoration showing a nice bright contract from the deeper, darker recesses. A very tiny hole is present in the languet immediately behind Actaeon's left knee which does not detract from the overall beauty of the decoration. The scabbard is good with a few light dings and tiny cracks around the mouth and some light scuffing on the leather. The field knife is very good, with A well aged patina on the steel and silver, mild patches of pitting and areas of metal fatigue on the blade. Taken as a whole, this is a top-notch piece of hunting equipment, a fantastic showcase of the cutler's art, and a fine combination of form and function that would stand out in virtually any collection of edged weapons, European or otherwise.

Description: Andrew Lang. The Library. With a Chapter on Modern English Illustrated Books by Austin Dobson. London: Macmillan & Co., 1881. First edition. Small octavo (7 x 4.6875 inches; 183 x 119 mm.). [iii]- xv, [1], 184 pages plus [8] pages advertisements. Lacking half-title. Three plates (two chromolithographs of bindings and a reproduction of a title-page); wood-engraved frontispiece (bound before dedication leaf), sixteen wood-engraved text illustrations, and wood-engraved head- and tail-piece and initials by Swain, O. Lacour, John Jackson, W. J. Linton, the Dalziel Brothers, T. Quartley, J. D. Cooper, and others, after drawings by Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, T. Bewick, D. G. Rossetti, John Tenniel, "E. V. B." (Mrs. Boyle), Randolph Caldecott, George du Maurier, Linley Sambourne, T. Stothard, Richard Doyle, and others. Extra-illustrated with eighty-nine additional plates and an Autograph Note Signed by Andrew Lang. Early twentieth-century brown crushed levant morocco. Covers with gilt double fillet border; spine panelled and lettered in gilt in compartments, with five gilt-dotted raised bands; board edges ruled in gilt; gilt inner dentelles; top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine and upper portion of rear cover slightly faded; joints rubbed, and starting to crack; tiny sliver missing at top of spine; lower corners very slightly bumped, other corners lightly rubbed; a few additional lightly rubbed areas; tiny nick to front cover at fore-edge. Paper slightly browned at the edges, with occasional thumbsoiling; diagonal crease across upper corner of a few leaves (now pressed); two small ink stains in outer margin of page 21; small adhesion to lower margin of page 145. Faint offsetting from some of the plates; several chromolithographed plates with slight vertical crease, most visible on the verso. An excellent example of early twentieth-century extra-illustration, in near fine condition. "There are, in every period of taste, books which, apart from their literary value, all collectors admit to possess, if not for themselves, then for others of the brotherhood, a peculiar preciousness. These books are esteemed for curiosity, for beauty of type, paper, binding, and illustrations, for some connection they may have with famous people of the past, or for their rarity. It is about these books, the method of preserving them, their enemies, the places in which to hunt for them, that the following pages are to treat" (pages 3-4). The Autograph Note Signed from Andrew Lang to [Scottish novelist William?] Black, dated "Dec. 8. / 8 Gibson Place," is written in black ink on one of four pages of a folded leaf, and presumably refers to Robert Louis Stevenson's depiction of Allan Breck Stewart in his novel Kidnapped (1886), and its sequel, Catriona (1893): "Dear Black, / In re Allan Breck [Steward] / his lingo. The Highlanders / reported verbatim in / Bishop Forbes's Lyon in / Mourning (Jacobite / Memoirs) speak ordinary / broad Scots, with a few odd idioms. I suppose / Stevenson went on / that evidence. / Yours very truly A Lang." The extra-illustrations include: photogravure plates, including "The Friendship of Books" after a painting by L. Minnigerode; a frontispiece portrait of the author, and portraits of Torquato Tasso, Confucius, Dante Alighieri, Sophia Western, and Charles Kingsley, most with descriptive tissue guards printed in red; chromolithographed plates from the series "Choice Examples of Book Illumination. Fac-similes from Illuminated Manuscripts and Illustrated Books of Early Date," and "Choice Examples of Paleography. Fac-similes from Rare and Curious Manuscripts of Oriental Countries," some with the descriptive tissue guards printed in red; numerous etched and engraved plates, many expertly inlaid to size or on India paper mounted, some with tissue guards, including portraits of Hans Sloane, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Samuel Johnson, Joseph Priestley, John Gower, Edgar Alan Poe, Edmund Spenser, Thomas Gray, William Black, and others; a folding engraved plate, mounted on card stock, of "The New Building at Cambridge in Perspective" by J. Clark, from Britannia Illustrata, or Views of All the Palaces...(London: 1724); a double-page hand-colored plate captioned "The Philistines be upon thee, Samson;" and an etched plate by George Cruikshank, on India paper mounted, captioned: "What it must come to, at last, if the Ladies go on blowing themselves out as they do!"
