LARGE HORSE FROM BURIAL GOODS

Lot 43: LARGE HORSE FROM BURIAL GOODS

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

November 22, 2014, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €0 - €7,000

Description: Terracotta with paint coating. China, Tang (618 - 907), TL-testedThis authentic, well-preserved, very lively and quite large horse, a so-called "prancing horse", has been tested by the renowned British Oxford Authentications laboratory and confirmed to be approximately 1200 years of age. The long-legged animal has one of its front legs elevated, the rear legs slightly bent, the tail shortened and bound, and the mane clipped. The small narrow head with large eyes shows the expression characteristic for Tang-horses. Hanging down between the eyes and small pointy ears, are two large tips of the mane. The saddle lies above a decoratively painted saddlecloth. On it, the original painting is largely remains preserved. The Mane, ears, hooves and upper side of the head on the animal that is otherwise painted red and standing on a rectangular base plate, are white. There is no opening on the abdomen. Due to the long storage time and also exposure to earth, there are many incrustations. The overall condition - consistent with the age - is very good.Note: In the Tang-period, which was a golden age of Chinese culture, intense horse-breeding was periodically operated. Diverse races (including the Arabian) were brought to China as tributes. In the year 725, the number of horses in imperial stud farms supposedly reached around four hundred thousand.This terracotta has been tested by Oxford Authentications and confirmed to be around 1200 years of age.HEIGHT 50,5 CM, LENGTH 54 CMFrom an Austrian private collection

THE SAINT MILAREPA

Lot 3: THE SAINT MILAREPA

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

November 22, 2014, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €0 - €1,000

Description: Silver-bearing bronze. West-Tibet, presumably 17th - 18th cent.Milarepa, who lived in the 11th to 12th century, is a historic and respectfully also a remarkable figure, as there are surviving autobiographic works by him. He is easily distinguishable by his hand, which he is holding in a shell-shape against his ear, in order to better hear the transcendental voice and teachings. His facial features with wide open eyes convey strain as well as joy. Milarepa, who enjoyed many followers and spent the last years of his life as a hermit in a cave, is sitting with a tucked-up leg on stag-fur; the head with antlers is rendered in full plasticity at the front. Noticeable on the heavily creased garment are the seams, engraved meticulously and unusually deep with floral vines. In the other hand the Guru (the venerable) is holding a raktapala (blood-filled skull cup). Precisely cut head hair, on the fastening is a vishvavajra. Patina, very well preserved.HEIGHT 16 CMFrom an Austrian private collection

White Jade Figure of a Recumbent Qilin, 19th/20th C.

Lot 53: White Jade Figure of a Recumbent Qilin, 19th/20th C.

by Auctionata

October 30, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,200 - €1,500

Description: White jade China, 19th/20th century Plastic figure of the mythical creature Qilin Detailed elaborate figure Brown inclusion on the tail Length: 6.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Munich Qilin The Qilin is known as one of the four Chinese miracle creatures. It is a chimera animal - a sort of stag with a dragon's head and ox hooves combined with a lion's head and a carp's beard. Even though the beast is thought to be rather large, it is known to be able to walk on grass without breaking it or crushing bugs. Fitting this, the Qilin is also known to live off a strict vegetarian diet. Its name is a combination of the maleQiand the female Lin and thus incorporates the principle of Yin and Yang and the dualism of the sexes. According to Chinese mythology, Qilins can turn thousand years old. The first Qilin was apparently caught back at Confuzius' time, but was immediately killed - much to the philosopher's disappointment. Lacking any comparable animals, the Chinese called the first giraffe they saw a Qilin - it was brought to China by the famous seafarer Zheng He (1371-1433/35) who brought the animal from one of his journeys to his emperor Yongle (1360-1424). Until today, giraffes are actually called kirin in Japanese and Korean. Condition: The jade is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The length is 6.5 cm. Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $60,000

Description: Certified long Archaic magnificent Chinese Jade belt buckle, Age: Attributed to early Chinese Dynasties: -Xia (2100-1600 BC);Shang (1600-1046 BC);Zhou Dynasty (1045-256 BC); Length: 8.2 inches = 21 cm; Thickness: 28 mm; Width: 1.25 in. = 35 mm; Weight: 4 oz. = 111.27 g; Microscopic research at x50 and x 200 magnification: marks of ancient tools and natural jade aging. Condition: used, well preserved, hand-carved, no defects;Provenance: from private collection in Florida, USA;Review of the Literature and Discussion:The belt hook was initially a dress accessory, but eventually became a collector item. A few jade hooks have been found at a Lingzhou site (34002250 BC), Neolithic culture. Belt hook was at its most widespread during the Eastern Zhou period (770-256 BC). Traditionally, the Chinese people tied knots to fasten their clothes. Belts were used tighten loose robes, mainly to facilitate movements, especially in outdoor activities. The stud on the back of the hook would would have been pushed through a slit on one end of the belt, while the other end would be equipped with a ring could be inserted into the hook.In Northern Song era , scholars avidly collected ancient jade or bronze belt hooks. By 17th century, belt hooks were put to a number of novel uses: elegant picture hooks on the wall or brush rests on scholars desks.Qing dynasty robes for men were not as loose as those of of the preceding Ming dynasty, and there is a very little pictorial evidence to show that belt hooks were worn as a clothing accessory.Although it was a considerable amount of jade hooks made in 18th and 19th century, they were made only to satisfy collecting craze of that era.since the hook was not intended to be worn, the gap between the dragon's head and the chi is very small.Another characteristic of Qing workmanship is that the chi is raised above the body of the hook to a level almost parallel wit the dragon's head. Conclusion:1) The hook in our auction is really worn and made to wear a clothing as a practical accessoires; 2) This hook has traces of ancient tools and signs of being buried for several hundred years; 3) There is a high probability that the hook in this auction was made in Eastern Zhou Dynasty 770-256 BC.
This jade hook is accompanied by certificate of authenticity.
Condition used, well preserved, hand-carved, traces of ancient tools, no defects;
Low Estimate: 30000.0;
High Estimate: 60000.0;
Original: Yes;
Circa: 770-256 BC;

Pair of Blue White Ginger Jars, Qilin and Scholars Rocks, Qing

Lot 37: Pair of Blue White Ginger Jars, Qilin and Scholars Rocks, Qing

by Auctionata

October 30, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €640 - €800

Description: Porcelain with blue underglaze painting China, Qing dynasty (1644-1911) Ginger jars with articulated shoulder and matching lid Each wall is decorated with Qilin in front of scholars rocks and plants Unglazed foot and neck Height with lid, each: 17 cm Diameter: 10 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Berlin Qilin The Qilin is known as one of the four Chinese miracle creatures. Its name is a combination of the male Qi and the female Lin and thus incorporates the principle of Yin and Yang and the dualism of the sexes. Blue and White Style The blue white porcelain had its golden age in the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), but it believed that this porcelain type was first made in the Tang Dynasty (618-906). Especially the proverbial 'Ming vase' characterizes mainly the European idea of the Chinese porcelain art. The blue color is caused by a mixture of cobalt oxide and water. The color has been painted onto the porcelain before glazing and firing. After that it is coated with a transparent glaze. Condition: The porcelain ginger pots are in good condition with slight manufacturing flaws here and there. Each height with lid measures 17 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
