HANDWRITTEN LYRICS TO

by Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Delaware, OH, USA

Estimated Price: $150 - $250

Description: HANDWRITTEN LYRICS TO "ELLSWORTH'S AVENGERS" AND A CDV OF ELMER ELLSWORTH. Dated October 12, 1862. Two pages, handwritten lyrics to the song by A.L. Hudson (and originally sung to the tune "Annie Lisle" by H.S. Thompson), on paper with the printed header depicting the Battle of Winchester, and page 2 with the stamp of noted historian Samuel P. Hildreth. 8"h. 5"w. Together with a Gurny & Son CDV of a uniformed Ellsworth with a landscape background. Elmer Ellsworth (1837-1861) was an ambitious young man whose rise to prominence was cut short on May 24, 1861 when he became the first Union soldier killed in the Civil War. He grew up in Illinois and studied law in Chicago where he also mustered the Cadet Attachment to the 60th Illinois Militia. A Springfield attorney named Abraham Lincoln hired young Ellsworth as a clerk in 1860, and Ellsworth followed Lincoln to Washington in 1861. Shortly thereafter, he moved to New York and raised the 11th New York Volunteers, modeling their training, and their uniforms, on the Algerian and French troops fighting in North Africa, called the Zouaves. Having recruited firemen for his unit, Ellsworth nicknamed them the Fire Zouaves. On May 24, 1861, Ellsworth and his Fire Zouaves began their occupation of Alexandria, Virginia. There they encountered a large Confederate flag hanging over the Marshall House inn. In Ellsworth's determined attempt to take down the flag, he was gunned down by innkeeper James Jackson, who was promptly killed by Zouave Corporal James Brownell. Ellsworth immediately became a martyr for the Union cause, inspiring songs and poetry, and a nation of patriotic souvenir-collectors began seeking out photographs and autographs of the fallen soldier.

Chester A. Arthur extremely rare signed photograph

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,800 - $3,500

Description: ARTHUR, CHESTER A. (1829-1886). America's twenty-first president. SP. ("Chester A. Arthur"). 1p. Cabinet. N.p., N.d. A sepia cabinet card by New York photographer Anderson depicting a somewhat diffident looking Arthur in three-quarters profile; boldly signed on the photographer's mount. After the Civil War, Arthur began his political career as collector of the Port of New York, a position to which he was appointed by President Grant and held from 1871-1878. While the head of the Customs House, he kept the spoils system of the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party in place. However, Grant's successor, Rutherford B. Hayes, sought to reform the Customs House and replaced Arthur. He rose to national prominence when James Garfield ran for the presidency with Arthur as his running mate, narrowly winning the 1880 election. Garfield was shot in July 1881 by an assassin claiming to be a Stalwart supporter of Arthur. It was assumed that President Arthur would continue to exploit the spoils system, much as he did during his days in New York. Instead, he made civil service reform a top priority in order to gain the support and trust of his critics and the nation. He signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act into law in 1883, creating a new stipulation that federal employees would be selected on merit based on the results of examinations. In very fine condition, except for a pinhead abrasion on the left side of his chest. Scarce.

H.G. Wells signed corrected proof of a book review

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $800

Description: Corrected Proof of a Book Review - WELLS, H.G. (1866-1946). English author, journalist and historian. DS. (“H. G. Wells”). 1p. Tall narrow folio. June 29 [1914]. Corrected proof for his article “The Great Community,” a book review of The Great Society: A Psychological Analysis by GRAHAM WALLAS (1858-1932) published in The Nation on July 11, 1914. Wells was born into a household, “penurious on the verge of squalor… [and] Wells’ origins and upbringing… profoundly influenced not only his novels but his social attitudes and explained much which seemed contradictory in his public character [including] the Socialist-individualist,” (DNB). Wells was remarkable for his foresight and imagination in such famous works as The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The Outline of History. In addition to the prescience of his writing, Wells’ was deeply concerned about society’s future, an interest that led him to seek answers from such political groups as the Fabian Society, a group of British intelligentsia interested in Socialism and co-founded by economist Sydney J. Webb. “In politics, as in his social relationships, Wells was impatient, irascible, and unpredictable. He flounced in and out of party Socialism. He was the enfant terrible of the early Fabians who were nevertheless stimulated, if exasperated, by his clash with [English author and Fabian George Bernard] Shaw and the Webbs. Realizing that the leadership would not come his way, he resigned in 1908,” (DNB). Wallas joined the Fabian Society in 1886 and two years later he was elected to its executive committee alongside Webb and Shaw. Wallas also taught at the London School of Economics and served on the London School Board. In 1904, he resigned from the Fabian Society, disagreeing with the organization’s stance on tariff reform. Around this same time, he began publishing his works on the psychology of politics. “In an era when others were mainly interested in the operations of laws and institutions, Wallas dealt with the human side of political problems and dealt with it as a socialist and nonconformist who believed fervently in equality” (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences). His first major work, Human Nature in Politics, published in 1908, argued against rationalist thought, noting that political actions is influenced by “personal affection, fear, ridicule, the desire for property, etc.” (Human Nature in Politics, Graham Wallas). His 1914 book, The Great Society, built upon these themes, indicating that the modern industrial society’s centralization of power and division of labor “deprives people of intimacy and initiative; that although it provides them with security, paradoxically it makes happiness more difficult to attain” (ibid.). Folded, and with Wells’ numerous corrections written in his small, refined hand; in very good condition and uncommon in this form.

Russian bronze medal Tsar Alexander II liberates serfs in 1861

by Eternity Gallery

May 12, 2015, 1:00 AM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $6,000

Description: Russian Bronze Medal, Tsar Alexander II liberates peasants-slaves in 1861 Obverse: 19 February 1861, with name of the artist at the bottom: from the model of count Tolstoy, by Z. N. Kozin Reverse: God bless Russian Christian people for the liberated labor/work Diameter: 68 mm = 2.7 inches Weight: 139.27 g Condition: genuine patina and oxidation, was not cleaned Emancipation of the serfs Soon after the conclusion of peace, important changes were made in legislation concerning industry and commerce, and the new freedom thus afforded produced a large number of limited liability companies. Plans were formed for building a great network of railways, partly for the purpose of developing the natural resources of the country, and partly for the purpose of increasing its power for defense and attack. The existence of serfdom was tackled boldly, taking advantage of a petition presented by the Polish landed proprietors of the Lithuanian provinces and, hoping that their relations with the serfs might be regulated in a more satisfactory way (meaning in a way more satisfactory for the proprietors), he authorized the formation of committees "for ameliorating the condition of the peasants," and laid down the principles on which the amelioration was to be effected. This step was followed by one still more significant.[citation needed] Without consulting his ordinary advisers, Alexander ordered the Minister of the Interior to send a circular to the provincial governors of European Russia (serfdom was rare in other parts), containing a copy of the instructions forwarded to the Governor-General of Lithuania, praising the supposed generous, patriotic intentions of the Lithuanian landed proprietors, and suggesting that perhaps the landed proprietors of other provinces might express a similar desire. The hint was taken: in all provinces where serfdom existed, emancipation committees were formed. The emancipation was not merely a humanitarian question capable of being solved instantaneously by imperial ukase. It contained very complicated problems, deeply affecting the economic, social and political future of the nation. Alexander had to choose between the different measures recommended to him and decide if the serfs would become agricultural laborers dependent economically and administratively on the landlords or if the serfs would be transformed into a class of independent communal proprietors. The emperor gave his support to the latter project, and the Russian peasantry became one of the last groups of peasants in Europe to shake off serfdom. The architects of the emancipation manifesto were Alexander's brother Konstantin, Yakov Rostovtsev, and Nikolay Milyutin. On 3 March 1861, 6 years after his accession, the emancipation law was signed and published. Year: 1861; Low Estimate: 3000; High Estimate: 6000; Condition: Excellent; Original: Yes;
