Lot 308: "Citoyens, la Patrie est en Danger"

by Autographes Enchères

April 25, 2015, 5:00 PM CET

1252 Meinier, Switzerland

Estimated Price: €80 - €90

Description: Law n. 1852 "Qui fixe les mesures à prendre quand la Patrie est en Danger", 7 printed pages, 4to; Paris, 8 July 1792 "an 4e de la Liberté". Head-piece with vignette and the trois-lys. Fine condition. Important law, signed by Louis XVI on the basis of a decree approved by the National Assembly on 4 and 5 July. Among the emergency rules are included the order, to all citizens that can use a weapon, to consider themselves permanently in service. It is compulsory for all people living or travelling in France, to wear a cockade in the three national colours; any cockade with different colours will be considered as an act of rebellion. Any proof of rebellion will be judged by a court and, if recognised as intentional, punished by death. This law was a reaction of the National Assembly to the war declared from foreign countries against the Revolutionary power. Less than a month after the publication of the law, the Parisians invaded the Tuileries and the royal family had to put herself under the protection of the National Assembly. The monarchy was no more. [Memorabilia]

Cambridge Glass Company in Cambridge, Ohio was chartered in 1873 and National Glass Company out of Pennsylvania organized it a few years later providing land and a building. The association with National Glass was doomed to failure, and by November 1907, the National Glass Company was formally placed into receivership, and the ?Big Three? of the (18) National plants struck out on their own. These factories were the Cambridge Glass Company, the Indiana Glass Company, and the McKee-Jeannette Company, all of which had been profitable. 1907 saw the financial collapse of the National Glass Company but this had no effect on the operations of the Cambridge Glass Co. and facility lease payments continued to be paid to National and its receivers. After three years of legal and financial proceeding that dissolved the National Glass Co., the Cambridge Glass Company was able to purchase the buildings in which it was operating. Now, eight years after it made its first piece of glass, Cambridge Glass Company was a completely independent company whose principal stockholder was Arthur J. Bennett. The company prospered under his ownership and around 1910 acquired the rights to the idle factory of the former Byesville Glass and Lamp Co. and expanded its operations into that plant, located a few miles south of Cambridge. xxxxxxxxxxxxx.Through the early years the company operated its own coal mines and consumed many tons daily producing raw gas to fire its melting pots. In addition to the gas it produced, the factory used natural gas from its own wells and also bought gas from other well owners. By 1920, the trend was away from the heavy pressed and imitation cut glass and toward lighter pressed and blown ware. Also by this time several etchings had entered the Cambridge line, among them Marjorie, named after Mr. Bennett's daughter. The early 1920s saw all operations stopped at the Byesville plant with all work now being done at the main plant in Cambridge. At the beginning of 1922, a new trade mark, the now familiar letter C enclosed in a triangle, was introduced. During the early to middle 1920s a variety of opaque colors were brought into the Cambridge line, most being produced for only one to three years. Later in the 1920s transparent colors became very popular, replacing the opaques. Complete dinnerware lines, plain and etched, were being sold as was a large selection of decorative and accessory items. The company continued to produce a complete line of pharmaceutical items, a line that was continued until 1954 when the original company ceased operations. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.Business grew as lines increased in part due to a manufacturing license to produce other company patterns, specifically in 1916, the United States Glass Company and the Duncan & Miller Glass Company granted both Cambridge and McKee Glass Companies licenses to manufacture certain pressed, figural, and cut lines under their patents. This arrangement was very satisfactory for all parties, and with in house innovation, the Cambridge Glass Company grew and thrived, peaking around the 1930s, when it had become one of the most revered glass companies in the world. The 1930s were prolific years, with colors such as Carmen, Royal Blue, Crown Tuscan, Heatherbloom and Forest Green developed and brought to market. New dinnerware lines and numerous new etchings including the famed Rose Point, became part of the Cambridge line. All this took place in spite of the effects the Great Depression had on company operations. During its peak years, Cambridge had as many as 700 employees working three shifts with all three furnaces running at full blast. Mr. Bennett continued as company president; his son-in-law, Wilber L. Orme, was vice-president; William C. McCartney was corporate secretary and sales manager; G. Roy Boyd Was treasurer and J. C. Kelly kept the plant running as factory superintendent. In July 1939, Mr. Bennett sold his controlling interest in the company to his son-in-law, Wilber L. Orme. Mr. Bennett continued as company president until his passing in February 1940. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. After WW II, demand for fine handmade glassware waned and foreign machine-made competition grabbed much of the market share. In 1954, the Cambridge plant closed, ending a very prosperous run. In an unsuccessful attempt to reopen and stay open, the company finally melted down in 1958 selling many of its molds and equipment to Imperial Glass Company in Bellaire, Ohio. With the heart of the community shattered, National Cambridge Collectors was created in order to preserve the area?s glass heritage. They recovered many of the moulds and equipment previously sold-off. No sooner did Cambridge Glass Company pass, than new life was breathed into four off-shoots that would continue the legacy of Cambridge glass. These four cornerstones of todays Cambridge legacy are Mosser Glass, Boyds Crystal Art Glass, Degenhart Glass Museum and National Museum of Cambridge Glass. All are open for business and tours.

1856 Charleston SC PORTER Slave Hire Identiciation Tag, Copper. License number 9

Lot 229: 1856 Charleston SC PORTER Slave Hire Identiciation Tag, Copper. License number 9

by Early American

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,000

Description: Black History1856 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire #9 Identification Tag1856-Dated. Charleston (SC) "PORTER" Slave Hire Identification Tag, by Veronee. Copper. License number 9. Choice Fine. This authentic, original Slave "Tag" or "Badge" is Diamond shaped, measuring about 1.5" square, made of Copper. Standard small round hole punch at top for suspension, as made. There is some waviness from actual use, the color having an even, natural patina. This Tag has a full and clear "1856" date, plus a fully clear and complete punch for the "PORTER" occupation at center. It has a deeply punched "9" being the exceedingly low Tag serial number. As the number on the badge indicates, this Slave was just the 9th to be licensed as a PORTER in the year 1756.It stands as a Great Rarity as being a single digit license number! There was a restriction imposed on the license limiting the Slave to work only in the designated field of the stated occupation. In the case of this Badge, the Slave was to be hired out only as a PORTER - a person who worked in a warehouse or dock moving crates, etc. The city name is quite easy to read and is full. An excellent color, quite clean and fully readable example of this scarce "PORTER" occupation type with license number "9".In her 2011 article, Cast in Bondage: Charleston Slave Tags and Slave Badges for "Smithsonian Magazine", author Victoria Dawson gave a succinct and compelling explanation of Slave badges -"It seems, at first glance, an innocuous if enigmatic artifact, a copper medallion 1.5 inches square, rough-edged and engraved with the words ''Charleston. 571. Porter. 1856.'But the inscription-a city, a number, an occupation and a year-is stamped on a rare fragment of the past, known to scholars of the period as a slave hire badge, one of three in the cultural collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The tag likely hung from the neck of a slave for a calendar year, representing all that we will ever know of one man: a porter in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1856, industrious and trusted enough to be leased out by his master for short-term hire but required by law to be licensed and to wear or carry a metal identification tag at all times."
