Mossman, meteorologist on board the Antarctic Ship "Scotia", comprising: 17 letters written by Robert Mossman to his father and another relation, Isabella, charting his journey and experiences on board the ship, visiting destinations on his journey South such as Kingstown in Ireland, Madeira, the Cape Verde Islands, Port Stanley, the South Orkneys and Buenos Aires, written between 1902 and 1905, many mentioning other crew members, wildlife, living conditions and his meteorological work; also a letter from expedition leader William Bruce to Mossman's father, from Port Stanley on 9th February 1904, relating to Robert's work; also 7 faded photographs, between c.12 x 16 and 16 x 20cm, taken at Port Stanley and sent home by Robert Mossman, showing penguins, a 'sea elephant', and views of Port Stanley - the images were engraved and reproduced in the 'Edinburgh Evening Dispatch'; also 3 smaller very faded photographs showing men on board a ship; also many newspaper clippings and magazine offprints relating to the expedition, such as: Bruce, W.S. Condition Report: Contents includes: - Full-page clipping of Scottish Antarctic Expedition team from 'The Scots Pictorial' - Loose certificate appointing Robert Mossman 2nd Lt. in Volunteer Forces - Newspaper clipping referring to Mossman and Antarctic Expedition - Copy of: Bruce, W.S. The Scottish Antractic expedition, [offprint from?] The Scottish Geographical Magazine, June 1900, blue wrappers, map - Further pasted articles and newspaper clippings - 1907 photograph of Mossman - Invitation from Mr and Mrs Bruce to reception? on Scotia - Robert Mossman's business card - Menu for a meal on board the Scotia on 18th Oct. 1902 - Another - Copy of telegram from Mr Bruce with Mr Ferrier's compliments, Madeira 19th November 1902 - Letter no.1: Sent by Mossman to his father on 19th November 1902 - describing leaving Scotland, the weather, saying "there is not much to say about life on board" and writing "we shall remain off Madeira for two dys after which we make for the FalklandIslands (Port Stanley)." Written on 2 sides of 'Antarctic Ship Scota' headed notepaper, and another short note, pasted onto page, describing Madeira - Letter no.2: Sent by Mossman to Isabella, from Madeira on 20/11/1902 - describing arrival in Madeira, some information deleted (possibly censored?) - Letter no.3: Sent by Mossman to Isabells from Kingstown, Ireland, November 4th 1902, describing journey and arrival - Letter no.4: Sent by Mossman to his father from Kingstown, Ireland, November 5th 1902,describing Kingstown: "I went ashore of Kingstown on Monday but do not think much of the place or the people, it seems a poverty stricken, tumbledown town with nothing to recommend it." - Letter no.5: Sent by Mossman to Isabella from 'near St Vincent, Cape Verde Islands, 1st? December 1902, saying the weather has been fine since leaving Madeira and that they have mostly been able to make good progess, describing a bout of food poisoning and describing flying fish coming landing on the ship - 3 telegrams regarding the expedition, sent from Edinburgh, referring to safe arrival in the Falkland Isles and issues regarding mail delivery - Letter no.6: 5pp. letter sent by Mossman to his father from written at sea before arriving at Port Stanley, dated 1st January 1903, anticipating that he won't be able to send further letters for several months, describing the journey, seeing sharks, the heat, Christmas dinner onboard the boat, catching a sun fish, taking meteorological observations, other expeition members, last note in letter made on January 6th in Port Stanley - Letter no.7: Letter from Mossman to his fathe, dated 24/1/1903 at Stanley, Falkand Isles, explaining that they are about to leave, that soe of te ship's animals have died, also "I send some hotographs of penguins & shags taken nea here…" - Letter no.8: Letter from Mossman to Isabella, sent from Port Stanley on 10th January 1903, 4.5pp. "This is a very dull place although of course it is a welcome change after two months at sea.", a severe storm, church, local dress, enclosed photos including sea elephant - 7 photographs, c.12x16.5cm and c.16.5x20.5cm, faded, showing the 'sea elephant', penguins, men in tussoch grass, Port Stanley x2, more penguins, new government works at Port Stanley, along with an article entitled 'Progess of the Scottish Antarctic Expedition' dated Wednesday February 25th 1903 with 3 engraved reproductions of some of these photographs - Letter from the 'Edinburgh Evening Dispatch', returning the photographs (presumably to Mr Mossman snr.)

Manufacturer: Colt Model: National Match BBL: 5 inch round Stock: Gauge: 45 ACP Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 6277NM Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent, with 99% of the original blue finish, showing some light handling marks and edge wear. The grips are very good, with the gold worn off the right medallion and some mild dings. The box is good with tape repairs. Mechanically excellent.

A Colt Conversion Unit slide assembly is currently installed with Patridge front and micro-click adjustable rear sights, the standard markings on the left, opened ejector port and a floating chamber barrel. The frame is fitted with an adjustable skeleton trigger, "VP/Y" trigger guard, serrated thin hammer, serrated mainspring housing and smooth stag grips with Rampant Colt medallions. Included with the pistol is a complete National Match barrel assembly, two 45 ACP magazines, small tools, and spare recoil spring plug and slide stop. Manufacturer: Colt Model: National Match BBL: 4 3/4 inch round Stock: Gauge: 22 LR Finish: blue Grips: stag Serial Number: 943NM Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Very fine as refinished with 95% of the blue finish, showing bright wear on the high edges and scattered light handling marks and spotting. The grips are excellent with a few tiny dings around the edges of the screw holes. The spare components are in good condition showing evidence of handling and wear. Mechanically excellent.

Description: U.S. Springfield Armory 1911A1 National Match Semi-Automatic Pistol Manufactured in 1943 by Union Switch and Signal, the frame of this pistol was sent to Springfield Armory to serve as the base of a National Match pistol. The Colt Government Model slide is numbered to match the frame, with high-rise serrated Patridge front and square notch rear sights, a "NM 7790429/N M" marked Colt barrel with matching serial number and a "7267718/N M" marked bushing. The "FJA" inspected frame has a Rockwell hardness test mark on the left side, with a "L" ahead of the slide stop, "T" and "SA" on the right side, and "NM" on the trigger guard. Fitted with a thin checkered hammer, serrated adjustable alloy trigger, checkered grip strap, serrated mainspring housing, checkered grips and an unmarked parkerized magazine. Manufacturer: Union Switch and Signal Model: 1911A1 BBL: 5 inch round Stock: Gauge: 45 ACP Finish: parkerized Grips: walnut Serial Number: 992278 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Excellent as arsenal upgraded to national match specification, with 95% of the parkerized finish remaining, showing some bright edge wear, a light takedown line on the frame and minor handling marks overall. A small dent is present on the right rear of the frame next to the grip safety, which does not affect function but has left a bright contact spot on the safety. The grips are excellent, with a few dings on the crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
