Description: Vintage gelatin silver press print New York, USA, 1962 Bill Ray (b. 1936) - American photographer Copyright stamp on verso 'CREDIT TO READ: Bill Ray LIFE MAGAZINE © Time Inc.' Image size: 24.2 x 16.7 cm Very good condition Bill Ray was a staff photographer for LIFE magazine; the present iconic picture of Marilyn Monroe already fetched over €3,600 at an international auction In 1962, Marilyn Monroe had one of her last and most remembered performances on the occasion of president JFK's 45th birthday. Her dress was made of a sheer and flesh colored marquisette fabric und served for her sultry rendition of 'Happy Birthday' that immediately captured the crowd. Bill Ray took the present picture from above the stage, after having quietly disappeared form the shielded area reserved for the press. The photograph played an important role in the legends that eventually grew around both the actress and JFK. The gelatin silver print shows the copyright stamp 'CREDIT TO READ: Bill Ray LIFE MAGAZINE © Time Inc.' on the verso. Further stamps, the label 'Photo MASI' and a number of notes such as 'Marilyn Monroe sings "Happy Birthday" to JFK [...]' are also verso presented. The print is in very good condition considering its age; there are only a few faint flaws along the upper and lower edge. The image size is 24.2 x 16.7 cm and the size of the sheet is 25.5 x 20.5 cm. Bill Ray (b. 1936) Bill Ray was born in Nebraska and started to work as a photographer in 1957, when he was active under contract with the National Geographic. In the same year, he was offered a freelance job with LIFE magazine. In 1957 he finally became their staff photographer and captured some of the most important actors, musicians or politicians of his generation, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles or Marilyn Monroe. Besides, Ray also traveled around the world, documenting the Vietnam War and numerous further historic events. Ray had studios in New York, Beverly Hills and Paris and produced alone 46 covers for the magazine 'Newsweek'. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. by Auctionata

January 8, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,040 - €1,300

Description: Gelatin silver press print New York, USA, 1962; printed later in 1989 Bill Ray (b. 1936) - American photographer Copyright stamp on the verso 'CREDIT TO READ: Cecil Stongton LIFE MAGAZINE © 1989 Time Inc.' Image size: 18.5 x 19.4 cm Good condition Bill Ray was a staff photographer for LIFE magazine; one of his iconic pictures of Marilyn Monroe fetched over €3,600 at an international auction In 1962, Marilyn Monroe had one of her last and most remembered performances on the occasion of president JFK's 45th birthday. Her dress was made of a sheer and flesh colored marquisette fabric und served for her sultry rendition of 'Happy Birthday' that immediately captured the crowd. The present picture reveals one of the rare images of Monroe together with Kennedy and his brother Robert F. Kennedy at a private after party in Manhattan. The secret service had strict instructions not to allow any photographs of the president and the actress together. The picture could only survive because the negatives were in a dryer during the confiscation. The gelatin silver print shows the copyright stamp 'CREDIT TO READ: Cecil Stongton LIFE MAGAZINE © 1989 Time Inc.' on the verso. A second stamp, the label 'Photo MASI' and further inscriptions such as 'Marilyn Monroe, Bobby + John Kennedy at [...] birthday party for JFK' are also presented on the verso. The print is in good condition considering its age; the photo paper reveals light handling marks and superficial damages along the edges. The image size is 18.5 x 19.4 cm and the size of the sheet is 26 x 20.5 cm. Bill Ray (b. 1936) Bill Ray was born in Nebraska and started to work as a photographer in 1957, when he was active under contract with the National Geographic. This rural stretch of land has produced some of the finest wines on the planet for a good two centuries. Vines thrive on the "golden hillside" between the Morvan hills and the Saône plain. The 28 districts of the Côte d'Or are geographically divided into two regions. The northern part is Côte de Nuits, named after the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and produces great red wines from Pinot noir. Côte de Beaune is the southern half, where valuable Chardonnay white wines on a par with Pinot noir are produced. The Grand Cru vineyard stretches across seven hectares of a hillside on the lower part of the Mont-Rachet hill. Marl and scree thinly cover the hill's solid chalk bedrock, forcing Chardonnay into the rock. The best growths have a unique presence, fineness and density. With just three-and-a-half hectares of vines, this Grand Cru vineyard is the smallest of the four Grand Cru sites belonging to Puligny-Montrachet. Chardonnay thrives on this gentle, southeast-facing slope. A solid chalk bedrock is located beneath the weathered chalk detrital, in which the vines must take root if they are to survive. The resulting white wines possess a depth of taste, are rich in finesse, aromatic and long-lasting.Both 1995 and 1996 were very good vintages for white wine from Burgundy. While the 1995 vintage brought wines with great acidity, the 1996 vintage wines are more fruity and concentrated. The 1995 vintage Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet was rated 94 to 97 points in Robet Parker's The Wine Advocate in 1997. In the same year, this wine was given a full score of 100 points in Wine Spectator magazine. The 1996 Leflaive Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet was rated 95 points by Robet Parker and 91 points in Wine Spectator in 1999.The fill levels are good (< 4 cm). The labels are slightly damaged and some are slightly soiled. The capsules are in perfect condition. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

David Douglas Duncan SELF-PORTRAIT USA 1969 Author-Signed First Edition Photographic History Of 1968 Presidential Nominating Conventions

by National Book Auctions

January 4, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Title: Self-Portrait: U. S. A.Author: David Douglas Duncan - David Douglas Duncan is an American photojournalist and among the most influential photographers of the 20th century. He is best known for his dramatic combat photographs. His career as a photojournalist had its origin when he took photographs of a hotel fire in Tucson, Arizona where he was then studying archaeology at the University of Arizona. His photos included one of a hotel guest who made repeated attempts to go back into the burning building for his suitcase. That photo proved to be newsworthy when the guest turned out to have been notorious bank robber John Dillinger and the suitcase to have contained the proceeds of a bank robbery in which he had shot a police officer. Unfortunately, after turning the film over to the Tucson Citizen, the film was lost forever, and the photos never printed. After college, Duncan began to free lance, selling his work to journals such as The Kansas City Star, Life and the National Geographic Magazine. After Pearl Harbor Duncan joined the Marine Corps, earned an officer's commission, and became a combat photographer. After brief postings in California and Hawaii, he was sent to the South Pacific on assignment when the United States entered World War II. Though combat photographers are often close to the action, they rarely fight. However, in a brief engagement at Bougainville Island, Duncan found himself fighting against the Japanese. Duncan also covered the battle of Okinawa. Duncan would be on board the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender. His war time photographs were so impressive that, after the war, he was hired by Life to join their staff upon the urging of J.R. Eyerman, Life's chief photographer. During his time with Life he covered many events including the end of the British Raj in India and conflicts in Turkey, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.Perhaps his most famous photographs were taken during the Korean War. He compiled many of his photos into a book called "This Is War!" (1951), with the proceeds going to widows and children of Marines who had been killed in the conflict. Duncan is considered to be the most prominent combat photographer of the Korean War.In the Vietnam War, Duncan would eventually compile two additional books "I Protest!" (1968) and "War Without Heroes" (1970). Here, Duncan stepped out of his role as a neutral photographer and challenged how the US government was handling the war.Aside from his combat photographs, Duncan is also known for his photographs of Pablo Picasso to whom he had been introduced by fellow photographer Robert Capa. Eventually, he was to publish seven books of photographs of Picasso. Duncan became a close friend of Picasso and was the only person allowed to photograph many of Picasso's private paintings. Duncan now lives in Valbonne, France, close to Mougins where Picasso spent his last 12 years.Greatly assisting Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) during their early years, in 1965 Duncan was presented with the 200,00th Nikon F built in recognition for his use and popularization of their camera. In 1966 he published "Yankee Nomad" a visual autobiography that collected representative photographs from throughout his career. In 2003 this was revised and published under the title of "Photo Nomad."Duncan traveled extensively in the Middle East, having been stationed there for 10 years as a Life photographer after World War Two. He later published "The World of Allah" in 1982Publisher: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., PublishersCity: New YorkYear: 1969Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 240 pagesWidth: 11.5" Height: 14.25"Book Details: This volume contains a photographic history of the presidential nominating conventions of 1968."David Douglas Duncan, the former Life photographer, originally covered the two conventions in his acclaimed television specials for NBC News. He has now assembled his extraordinary work in this book: "Self-Portrait: U.S.A.." It moves chronologically (and intimately) from Rockefeller's jubilant arrival in Miami through Nixon's acceptance of the Republican nomination; from the first view of Mayor Daley's Chicago with its welcome signs and police dogs though the turbulence both inside and outside the convention hall which rocked the city and the nation. Although vastly different, the two conventions marked a watershed of American politics, stimulating a great new flow of history. Duncan has now revealed the face of our county -- young and old -- reacting to some of the major clashes of the world of today." (From text of front jacket flap)Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first edition. An inscription on the page opposite the title page reads "15 Oct (?) 69 / illegible word / For Irving Bernstein / One photographer / to another . . . / Good luck! / David Douglas Duncan."This folio volume is bound in blue cloth with bright stamped gilt lettering to the spine and the party emblems of the Republican and Democratic Parties stamped in gold, within gilt circles, on the front cover. The book shows light shelfwear. The binding is sound. The volume has photographic endpapers. The interior is clean and without markings. The intact dust jacket displays shelfwear. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States.
