Robert Indiana Art Print Self Portrait 69 Skid Row

by Universal Live Auctions

April 9, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Northbrook, IL, USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This self portrait contains the great, bolg geometric shapes the artist is known for. Artist: Robert Indiana Title: Self Portrait 69 Skid RowMedium: Lithograph on paperSheet size: 10 1/2 x 14 1/8 inchesCondition: ExcellentBiography:Robert Indiana (1928- ) was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, and he later took the "nom de brush" of his home state. He studied at art schools in Indianapolis and Utica, the Chicago School of the Art Institute and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine. In 1953 and 1954 he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, afterwards settling in New York, hanging out with art stars Ellsworth Kelly and Jack Youngerman. Indiana's 1973 "Love" stamp was probably the most widely distributed Pop image ever (300 million were issued - the artist was paid $1,000 for his work), but his subject matter is drawn from decidedly UN-Pop American literature and poetry. Best known for sign-like paintings and sculpture, Indiana has also done figurative painting, written poetry, produced opera and collaborated on the film "EAT" with Andy Warhol. His work is held in every major collection of contemporary art, including: Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, The Netherlands; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan; Allentown Museum of Art, Pennsylvania; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Brandeis Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Albright-Knox Gallery of Art, Buffalo, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, Delaware; Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, Germany; Los Angeles County Museum, California; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California."(Indiana) has influenced a younger generation of ''word'' artists like Jenny Holzer, Christopher Wool and Barbara Kruger, and at its best it has a jumpy vitality that registers the beat of American life," wrote Grace Glueck in her 1999 review of the artist's retrospective at the Portland Museum of Art, ''Love and the American Dream: The Art of Robert Indiana.'' And the beat goes on - this image has lots of staying power and freshness and may be the perfect addition to your collection of 20th century prints.

Description: [Walter Crane, subject]. P. G. Konody. The Art of Walter Crane. London: George Bell & Sons, 1902. First edition, one of 100 copies on Arnold's handmade paper, this being number 11. Davis, of the socially-prominent Emma Fenton, a Daughter of the American Revolution, whom the artist painted when he was only 23. Doubtless her debutante portrait, Emma Fenton emerges from Davis's canvas as a distinct personality, despite all the attention lavished upon her beautiful gown and other decorative trappings.

Condition Report: Framed in a handsome ornate gilt frame. Lined canvas.

Markus Pierson 'AMERICAN COYOTE IN PARIS NO. 33'

by Universal Live Auctions

April 9, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Northbrook, IL, USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: American Coyote in Paris No. 33Medium: Photolitho on PaperOrientation: verticalImage Size: 4.75 x 9.25 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 14.5 inchesEdition Size: 195: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Biography Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life's ups and downs. He has had nearly one hundred solo exhibitions in galleries across America, Australia and New Zealand, while also being featured at various prestigious international fairs including Art Miami, Artexpo New York, Sofa Chicago, Chicago Contemporary & Classic, and palmbeach3. Markus has amassed a collector base which includes Heads of State, major corporations and celebrities worldwide. Markus' wife and muse is artist, Sheryl Pierson. The two live and work in a converted loft in Kansas City, Missouri. "There's no doubt in my mind that my success has more to do with luck than talent, more to do with stubbornness than vision, more to do with ignorance than insight, but the fact remains that I pursued my dream and attained it against staggering odds. I say this now to anyone who will listen: even if I had failed, it would have been worth it. Better to face a brutal truth than to grow old wondering what might have been. " Markus Pierson

Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip Prod

Lot 94254: Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip Prod

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Description: Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip Production Cel Setup (Walt Disney, 1959). A beautiful production cel of Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip sharing a kiss in the closing "Once Upon a Dream" song Sequence, in which her dress changes from pink to blue during a fight between the fairies with their wands. The cel is in an unbelievable hand-painted studio custom publicity setup in the shape of a heart -- rather appropriate, since the film was released on 1/29/59, near Valentine's Day. The balance of the cel is painted pink with insets of the film's characters looking on. The cel is placed on a hand-painted Disney Studio Art Props presentation background featuring clouds. This is one of the most elaborate publicity cel setups we have come across. A nice image of the couple measuring 6". There is cracking in the pink area, as well as cracks and small paint loss in Aurora's dress and slight paint loss to Phillip's head. The other characters are in Fine condition. There is tape around the edges of the set-up. A rare item in Very Good condition. From the Bob Dorfman Collection.
