The breviary's evangelic tendency becomes obvious in prayers like 'Ein Gebet zu sprechen vor der empfahung des Sacraments' (a prayer to be said before receiving the sacrament), 'Ein Gebet zu der heiligen Dreyfaltigkeit' (a prayer to the Holy Trinity) or 'Ein Gebet für Weltliche Obrigkeit' (a prayer for secular authority). Additionally, the absence of prayers to saints and a focus on the sacrament of the Communion clearly show the works reformatory character, to which Luther's Psalter, printed by Hans Lufft in 1531, is bound in.Illustration With the gilt-heightened heraldic woodcut crest of Augustus I, Elector of Saxony in a masterly old coloring on verso of the title leaf. The crest shows the two crossed red swords and the black and golden band in floral tendril frames, embellished with numerous small birds like owls, parrots, finches, redbreast etc. sitting on acanthus twines.Collation 1 endpaper with ownership entry; 1 title leaf (A1), 59 unnumbered leafs (A2-8, B-G1-8, H1-4) German part; 15 unnumbered leafs (a1-8, b1-7) Precatio contra hostes; 2 leafs (c1-c2) register and publisher's imprint. The total of 77 leafs make this text complete. Lacking the blank leaf b8.Bound in: Luther's „Der Deudsch Psalter, mit den Summarien" The bound in book of psalms was made in the printing shop of Hans Lufft from Wittenberge the first publisher of Luther's translation of the bible and later Luther's preferred publisher. This work is an extremely rare print of the translation of the psalms which Luther had already completed in 1531.Collation: Title leaf with woodcut border (A1); 270 unnumbered leafs (A2-8; B-Z8; Aa-Ll8), making a total of 271 (of 272) leafs. Lacking the last blank leaf Ll8. The text is complete.Condition In very good to excellent condition. Strong impression on firm paper. Inner joints and book block somewhat brittle. Some gatherings somewhat loosened in book block. Paper slightly but evenly browned. Upper margin cropped somewhat closed in places. With very neatly executed entry of the two psalms in red ink according to the dates of the church year by a contemporary hand (the elector's?).Binding Valuable and splendid calf binding with eight corner fittings made of fine silver, which also cover the edges and were fastened with silver pins. Each corner piece shows three flowers with foliage growing out of a stylized corm. Clasp fittings made in form of eight small great astrantia major. The clasps are endowed with the entwined monogram of John George I, Elector of Saxony, in ligature (1585-1656). 18th century calf binding. Chiseled gilt edges on all three sides, which are slightly rubbed. Three bands. Dimension of binding: 14 x 10 x 5 cm.Provenance John George I, Elector of Saxony (1585-1656).Augustus I, Elector of Saxony (1526-1586) August of Saxony, also called Augustus, became elector of Saxony in 1553, shortly after the death of his brother Moritz, elector of Saxony. He led the governing body of the Lutheran and reformed imperial states, in doing so, he put strong focus on the balance of interests between the Catholic and the Protestant league. For instance, in favor of the Ernestinian branch of the House of Wettin, he gave up a large part of his territory in context of the Naumburg Treaty in 1554. He fought against the Calvinists side by side with the Catholic emperors of the House of Habsburg.References I: VD16 ZV 17351. Only proof of one copy in the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha.
