Baby Mosasaur Skeleton, Morocco, Late Cretaceous

Lot 91: Baby Mosasaur Skeleton, Morocco, Late Cretaceous

by Auctionata US

April 19, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $64,000 - $80,000

Description: 'Halisaurus Arambourgi'Late Cretaceous period, 73-65 million years agoOulad Abdoun Basin, Morocco60% complete specimenApproximate dimensions of skeleton (height x width x depth): 25 x 67 x 13 inches (rib cage) (63.5 x 170.2 x 33 cm)Dimensions of crate (height x width x depth): 27 x 41 x 31 ½ in. (68.6 x 104.1 x 80 cm)This 'Halisaurus Arambourgi' is an extinct genus of marine lizard which belongs to the mosasaur family. The fossil presented here originated from the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous period in the Oulad Abdoun Basin in Morocco. The reptile was a powerful swimmer, gliding through the sea like a snake with its long, sinuous body. The mosasaur also had double-hinged jaws and flexible skulls, much like our modern-day snakes, allowing them to swallow their prey, such as fish, ammonites and sharks, whole. This excellent specimen is 60% complete with a few built up areas to complete the skeleton, and is situated on a tall stand, making the mosasaur a beautiful, 3D display piece. The skeleton approximately measures 25 x 67 x 13 inches (height x width x depth). Due to the aged nature of the materials, please note that the preservation of fossils often includes reparation, restoration, and enhancement. A specimen is rarely uncovered in totality and customarily entails the replacement and reconstruction of various elements lost from the decay and erosion process. This also may require the professional highlighting, shading, or coloring of separate pieces for the exhibition of a comprehensive, integrated appearance.

Fossil Ichthyosaur Holzmaden, Germany, Jurassic

Lot 92: Fossil Ichthyosaur Holzmaden, Germany, Jurassic

by Auctionata US

April 19, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $36,000 - $45,000

Description: 'Stenopterygius guadriseissus'Jurassic periodPosidonienschiefer Formation, Holzmaden, GermanyOverall dimensions (length x width x depth): 49 x 30 ½ x 3 ¼ in. (124.5 x 77.5 x 8.3 cm)Length of fossil: 40 in. (101.6 cm)The ichthyosaur, or 'fish lizard', first appeared over 250 million years ago, 20 million years before the first dinosaur. As one of the important icons of paleontology, the ichthyosaurs represent an important case study "from feet to flippers " in evolutionary biology: They appear to have evolved from land-dwelling reptiles who took to the ocean, as evident by the structure of their flippers which seem to have once resembled hands. This virtually complete skeleton is in excellent state of preservation. Due to meticulous preparation, the surface texture of the bone can be seen clearly, particularly in the skull. Also noteworthy are the two rows of tiny, sharp teeth which have been finely prepared in three-dimension. This skeleton is captured in profile and includes the left paddle-like forelimb. It is fully articulated without significant distortion or displacement of the bones, which allows one to appreciate the unusual evolutionary design of this once-great marine reptile. Overall, the complete specimen measures 49 x 30 ½ x 3 ¼ inches, while the fossil measures 40 inches in length.

Lot 63: Fossil Shark's Tooth, Florida, Miocene

by Auctionata US

April 19, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $480 - $600

Description: 'Carcharocles megalodon'Miocene periodSwanee River, Florida, USADimensions (length x width): 5 3/8 x 3 ¾ in. (13.6 x 9.5 cm)Auctionata possesses a level of ownership in the present lot in whole or in part, or has an economic interest in the lot equivalent to an ownership interest. The deadliest animal in the Earth's oceans, the Megalodon, is among the most coveted specimens for the prehistoric collector. Their massive teeth are all that remain of these great carnivores as their cartilaginous skeletons are rarely preserved in the fossil record. The present example was found in the Swanee River, Florida, and displays complete enamel retention, exceptional serrations along its edge, and a soft slate blue patina blending into an olive toned tip. Measuring 5 3/8 inches in length and 3 ¾ in width, it is easy to image just how deadly a mouthful of these teeth would have been.

It was on September 13, 1937 that Kainsaz streaked across the sky alarming the local Soviet citizenry. Uncertain as to its origins, KGB agents were placed on high alert and recovered the four largest specimens. The partial slice with one edge of fusion crust offered here is from one of the original masses deaccessioned by Russian Academy of Sciences. Kainsaz contains particles that scientists believe were created prior to the formation of our solar system-and is the oldest substance mankind can touch. The white CAI's (calcium-aluminum inclusions) are among the first substances to have condensed out of the gaseous nebula from which our planets formed. The partial slice measures 1.3 x 0.9 x 0.1 in. MICKEY HART HAND WRITTEN _FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN_

Lot 643: MICKEY HART HAND WRITTEN _FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN_

by Donley Auction Services

April 12, 2015, 12:00 PM CST

Union, IL, USA

Description: The handwritten lyrics to _Fire on the Mountain_ as scribed by Mickey Hart with a hand written set list on the back that several expert people believe will prove to be written by Jerry Garcia. Everyone knows that members of the Dead, as well as Robert Hunter very seldom hand wrote song lyrics out either partially or in their entirety and that is why they are so unbelievably rare and generally never seen or even heard of. In terms of scarcity dozens of hand written Beetles lyrics have surfaced over the decades, yet fewer than half a dozen hand written Grateful Dead lyrics have in this time. Hand written Fire on the Mountain lyrics by Mickey Hart are incredibly rare Grateful Dead historical documents seldom offered in public sales. Estimate: $50,000-80,000
