Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Short Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Special Order Features

Lot 1029: Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Short Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Special Order Features

by Rock Island Auction Company

December 6, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,000

Description: Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Short Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Special Order Features Winchester Special Order Model 1894 Takedown rifle with rare special order features that include Swiss buttplate, 22-inch full octagon barrel, double set triggers, 2/3 magazine, pistol grip stock and special front, rear and tang sights. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Records Office letter that lists the special features and states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on April 19, 1907. The combination of special order features on this rifle is extremely rare, particularly the nickel-plated Swiss buttplate. No Model 1894 rifle with identical features is pictured in the comprehensive illustrations of Model 1894 variations in "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. The rifle is fitted with a replacement Lyman 32W front sight with ramp and white bead and a Lyman No. 56 receiver sight. The barrel has two (one non-factory) rear sight dove-tails fitted with blanks. The front and rear sights and dove-tail blanks are later additions; the Cody letter lists the original rifle sights as: "Lyman combination front and leaf, Marble flexible joint rear cup disc" (these sights are absent). The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine and receiver with casehardened hammer and lever. The forearm and pistol grip stock are straight grain walnut with checkered panels and a medium polish piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21 1894." ahead of the first sight dovetail. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark and "25-35 W.C.F." are stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel between the second sight dove-tail and the receiver. A "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the receiver. The serial number "332279" is stamped across the front of the lower receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-TRADE MARK" in three lines. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894 BBL: 22 Inch Stock: walnut checkered Gauge: 25-35 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 332279 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% of the original finish. The blue finish is thin on the lower two-thirds of the takedown collar and the lower portion of the receiver ahead of the lever cut-out. The contact points on the lever have faded to a silver patina. The stock and forearm are both in very fine overall condition and retain nearly all of the original finish. The flat checkering on the forearm and pistol grip shows light-moderate handling wear. All of the markings are crisp. The replacement front and rear sights are in excellent condition. This is a unique example of a special order Winchester Model 1894 Takedown rifle with a rare, documented combination of special order features.

The receiver is in excellent overall condition with pristine side plate joints and shows only a few, very minor, handling marks. The inscriptions on the side plates are extremely crisp. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine has only very minor high point wear and a mild patch of light pitting on the center top of barrel. The loading gate has 90% plus or more of the niter blue finish intact under a coat of old grease. The hammer has vivid case colors. The case colors on the lever have faded to an attractive blue patina. The barrel legend and tang serial number are sharp. The bore is mirror bright. The deluxe, fancy grain, English walnut stock and forearm retain more than 90% of the high polish piano finish and are in excellent condition; wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. Winchester factory presentation rifles are extremely rare. Only a few Model 1866 rifles have silver-plated receivers and buttplates or deluxe English walnut stocks and forearms. This rare and spectacular rifle has the unique combination of a Winchester factory presentation and equally rare silver-plated finish with deluxe English walnut stock and forearm.

Rare Documented Early Special Order Antique Winchester Extra Light Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot 1039: Rare Documented Early Special Order Antique Winchester Extra Light Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

by Rock Island Auction Company

December 6, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: Rare Documented Early Special Order Antique Winchester Extra Light Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1897. This rifle along with a number of special order features also has a very rare extra lightweight 22 inch "pencil" barrel with 2/3 magazine tube (these would be two separate options) and this is a very early extra light example with the front sight dovetailed into the barrel. Winchester quickly learned how dangerously thin the barrel material could get under the dovetail cut, very critical in larger calibers, so almost all of the extra light guns were found with a ramped front sight with the ramp either integral to the barrel or silver soldered to the barrel. The muzzle on this rifle has a diameter of only 7/16 inch. This rifle also features a special order Lyman front blade sight, Lyman three leaf rear sight and Lyman tang mounted short range peep sight and a shotgun butt and hard rubber buttplate. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "30 W.C.F." at the breech. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. Blue finish with a casehardened hammer and lever, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The accompanying factory letter verifies the 22 inch round barrel, extra light rifle configuration, caliber, plain trigger, 2/3 magazine, shotgun butt with hard rubber buttplate, that it was received in the warehouse on October 25, 1897 and shipped out of the warehouse with 2 other guns to order number 16981 on October 27, 1897. This rifle is pictured, identified by serial number and described on page 56 of "The Winchester Model 94 The First 100 Years" by Robert C. Renneberg. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894-Carbine BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 30 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 28202 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 60% plus of the original blue finish with most of the finish loss on the receiver, which has a mix with original blue finish and smooth gray and brown patina. There is some mild thinning on the muzzle and a few minor scratches on the barrel. Much of the original bright case colors remain on the hammer, while the lever has a smooth dark patina with strong case colors in the protected areas. The wood is very good with a few scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. A very nice example of an extremely rare early extra light Model 1894 rifle with 2/3 magazine and factory special order options.

by Rock Island Auction Company

December 6, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $25,000 - $40,000

Description: Winchester Third Model 1876 Carbine with Rare Casehardened Receiver with Factory Letter Winchester Model 1876 carbine manufactured in 1883. The included factory letter confirms that it originally had a casehardened finish, was received at the warehouse on February 24, 1883, and shipped on February 26, 1883, as part of order number 2475. The carbine has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The receiver has the rare, special order, color casehardened finish. The barrel band, hammer, lever, trigger and buttplate are also color casehardened. The barrel, forearm tip, dust cover, bolt and loading gate are blued. The carbine has the distinctive full length forearm and metal forearm tip. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a carbine style buttplate with no trap. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish. The barrel has a standard Winchester steel front sight and a unique, non-factory tangent rear sight. The right side of the sight has 100 and 225 yard elevation markings and the sight has precision adjustments for elevation and windage. The rear sight is contemporary to the carbine. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The barrel and cartridge elevator have no caliber markings which indicates the carbine is chambered for the .45-75 cartridge. The upper receiver tang is drilled and tapped for a sight and is roll-stamped: "{ MODEL. 1876.}" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number "32664" is stamped between the lever latch and the tang screw in script numerals. Winchester Model 1876 carbines with special order casehardened receivers are very rare. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45-75 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 32664 Class: Antique Condition: Extremely fine. The carbine retains 85% plus of the blue and color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel; wear is limited to some scattered age spotting. The factory legend is clear. The rear sight has about 70% of the niter blue finish intact. The forearm endcap has 75% of the blue finish with patches of age discoloration. At least 90% of the high polish blue finish is present on the dust cover and the loading gate has about 80% of the fire blue finish. Close to 95% of the vivid case colors are present on the receiver, hammer and lever. The receiver has minimal finish loss but does show some scattered age spotting. There is some discoloration on contact points of the lever. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a gray-brown patina and there are traces of pitting on the buttplate heel. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant storage marks and most of the original finish remains. This is an excellent example of a rarely encountered and very desirable Winchester Model 1876 Carbine with special order casehardened receiver that is confirmed with the included factory letter.

Lot 3016: Documented Ultra Rare, Deluxe, Special Order, Factory Engraved, Gold Inlaid Presentation Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Seven-Leaf Express Sight and Factory Letter

by Rock Island Auction Company

December 7, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $35,000 - $55,000

Description: Documented Ultra Rare, Deluxe, Special Order, Factory Engraved, Gold Inlaid Presentation Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Seven-Leaf Express Sight and Factory Letter Special order Winchester Third Model 1873 rifle with extremely rare factory "Seven Leaf Express" rear sight. Examples of this sight are pictured and described on pages 316-317 of "WINCHESTER NEW MODEL OF 1873 VOLUME I" by James D. Gordon. James Gordon describes the sight as: "The rarest and most interesting rear sight found on Model 1873s". He identifies only ten rifles by serial number known to have been fitted with this special sight. Gordon further states that the majority of the rifles with Seven-Leaf Express sights have special order features such as engraving, plating or deluxe wood and two of the known rifles have "rare matted barrels". He notes that most of the Seven Leaf Model 1873s were recovered from Africa. In addition to the Seven Leaf Express sight, this rifle has a special order 26-inch octagon barrel with matted top flat, single set trigger, factory engraving on the forearm cap, dust cover, receiver and buttplate, silver-plated finish and deluxe, fancy grain, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with ebony insert. The left side of the receiver is factory inscribed with the gold-filled presentation: "A.I.N. DURAN HOOP STAD" in a circle on the left side plate. The right side plate is engraved with a hound's head surrounded by scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The engraving was almost certainly executed by master engraver John Ulrich and is similar to his work illustrated in "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that lists all the rifle's features including the inscription and states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 27, 1882. Research identifies "Hoopstad" as a town in South Africa located in what was once the Boer Orange Free State. Considerable fighting between the British and Boers took place in and around Hoopstad during the Boer War (1899-1902). "Duraan" is a common Afrikaner name and that Albertus Duraan (b. Orange Free State circa 1848) is very possibly the "A.I.N. DURAN" who was the recipient of this rifle. In addition to the special features, the top of the matted barrel flat is roll-stamped with the Winchester two-line legend with King's Improvement patent dates. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "- MODEL. 1873.-" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number "104936/A" is stamped in script across the lower tang behind the lever latch. The left side of the barrel is stamped F157U just ahead of the forearm cap. In addition to the silver-plated forearm cap, dust cover, receiver and crescent buttplate, the rifle has a blued barrel, magazine and loading gate, casehardened hammer, lever and trigger. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1873 BBL: 26 Inch Stock: fancy walnut checkered pistol grip Gauge: 44 WCF Finish: blue/silver-plated/gold inlaid Grips: Serial Number: 104936 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The rifle shows moderate wear associated with use in the field. The barrel and magazine retain at least 85% of the possibly period refurbished blue finish with scattered surface rust and handing wear. The Seven Leaf Express sight has about 80% of the blue finish. The sight leaves have some scattered patches of surface rust and the sight base has light pitting. The engraved scrollwork is crisp and gold inlaid presentation is nearly all present. The silver plated finish on the forearm cap, receiver, dust cover and buttplate has flaked and shows moderate to heavy wear with about 50% of the silver plating. The plated surfaces are lightly pitted and the buttplate are gray patina with mild pitting. The stock and forearm are also very good. The checkered panels are worn. There is a hairline crack in the left stock wrist and an old chip in the left side of the pistol grip. Although this rifle shows considerable use it remains one of the most elaborate Deluxe, Special Order, Factory Engraved, Gold Inlaid, Presentation Winchester Model 1873 rifles extant and one of the very few Model 1873 rifles fitted with the ultra rare Winchester Seven Leaf Express sight. A great opportunity to own a possible one of a kind significant documented Winchester presentation 1873 rifle.

The carbine has a full blue finish and varnished walnut, military style forearm with grasping grooves, hand guard and stock with carbine butt. The right side of the receiver is engraved: "FROM/THE COLONEL and his LADY VIRGINIA/TO/"RUSTY" CASTEEL/APRIL 3, 1937" in five lines. The barrel is fitted with a ramp front sight with sheet steel front sight cover. The rear sight is the standard military style folding leaf with 1000 yard ramp and 1800 yard leaf. A sling ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The buttplate has a sliding trap. The top of the receiver is stamped with the oval "W/P" Winchester proofmark followed by ".30/ARMY". The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the elongated Winchester New Haven address and 1895-1907 patent dates. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 95/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.U.S. PAT. OFF & FGN" in three lines. The serial number "425111" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. Attached to the rear sight is an original, typed Winchester tag which gives the zero for this carbine using .30-40, 180 grain Power Point Super X cartridges. This unique, presentation, Model 1895 carbine is one of the very last examples of the Model 1895 Winchester manufactured. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 95 BBL: 22 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 30 ARMY (30-40) Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 425111 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent plus. The carbine retains 99% of the original blue finish. Some very minor cycling scuff marks are present on the sides of the magazine and loading lever and some very minor finish loss on the heel of the buttplate and the top of the bolt. The stock, forearm and hand guard are in almost new condition with all of the original finish remaining. The engraving on the right side of the receiver is crisp and sharp. This is a unique and fully documented example of a Winchester Model 1895 carbine with presentation engraving and special front sight. The writer has never seen another 95 carbine like this one!

When released, this telescopic sight cost in excess of 10 times the purchase price of the average rifle from the same company.
