Meissen, Art Nouveau Figure of a Cow, Erich Hösel, 1924-1934

Lot 71: Meissen, Art Nouveau Figure of a Cow, Erich Hösel, 1924-1934

by Auctionata

October 29, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €960 - €1,200

Description: Porcelain with white glaze and underglaze polychrome paint Germany, 1914 Design by Oskar Erich Hösel (1869-1953) - German sculptor and porcelain designer Manufactured by the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (Pfeiffer mark), 1924-1934 Model number V 151 Underglaze blue crossed swords mark, incised model number V 151, impressed number 115 as well as painter's number 7 Naturalistic shaped grazing cow with white fur and brown spots Long oval base in white Overall dimensions: 15 x 25 x 7 cm Good condition, first choice Fine Art Nouveau work by Erich Hösel, who became the artistic director of the Meissen porcelain manufactory in 1903 The present Meissner Art Nouveau porcelain figure of a cow was designed by Oskar Erich Hösel (1869-1953) in 1914. The sober design is characterized by a calm form and discreet coloring. The underglaze paint shows subtle iridescent shades. Since 1903, the artistic director of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, Oskar Erich Hösel, carefully promoted the modernization of the company. Especially the animal figures were able to raise the popularity of the manufactory and put it on a par with the work of Royal Copenhagen and Nymphenburg. The figure bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, the incised model number V 151, the impressed number 115 and the painter's number 7 to the underside. It is of first choice and in good overall condition, showing light wear. A horn tip and a point on the base are chipped. The dimensions of the figure are 15 x 25 x 7 cm.Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality - the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the porcelain's high quality. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and the company goes as far as to have its own mine to win the needed kaolin from, also known as china clay, for production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a 'master painter' in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Large Meissen Porcelain Figure, 'Science', Germany, 1894-1924

Lot 62: Large Meissen Porcelain Figure, 'Science', Germany, 1894-1924

by Auctionata

October 29, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €4,800 - €6,000

Description: Porcelain with polychrome décor and on-glaze gold accents Germany, 1894 Design by Emmerich Andresen (1843-1902) - German sculptor and porcelain designer Manufactured by Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, 1894-1924 Underglaze blue crossed swords mark, incised model number 'P. . 136' and impressed mark '121' Scientia reading a book, standing with attributes of science on a rock and rocaille base Globus and further books on a tree stump in front of an owl, a magnifying glass and a glass vial Height: 46 cm Good, restored condition, first choice Stunning allegorical representation of the science with extremely fine and detailed modeling and decor This beautiful porcelain figurine was designed in 1894 by the German sculptor and porcelain designer Emmerich Andresen, who was head of the sculpture workshops of the Royal Meissen porcelain manufactory from 1886 to 1902. Andresen was an exponent of the academic-classical art. He was involved in the artistic decoration of the imperial yacht 'Hohenzollern' and found an interested buyer of his works with Kaiser Wilhelm I. The impressive figure of the 'Scientia' testifies to Andresen's great artistic talent. Not only the fine decor of the robes of the present allegory of the science is striking, also the sculptured forms with the modeled folds and the great wealth of detail are particularly noteworthy. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, the incised model number the 'P. . 136' and the impressed mark '121'. The figure is of first choice and in good restored condition. Inspection under UV light reveals restored points affecting the books, leaves of the tree and the figure. Very good impression with the naked eye. The height of the figure is 46 cm. Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality - the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners - and extremely expensive. Meissen Porcelain, Allegorical Group, 'Earth', 1860-1924

Lot 61: Meissen Porcelain, Allegorical Group, 'Earth', 1860-1924

by Auctionata

October 29, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,200 - €4,000

Description: Porcelain, polychrome painted decor with on-glaze gold accents Germany, 1775 Design by Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799) - French sculptor and porcelain designer Manufactured by Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, 1860-1924 (pommel period) Underglaze blue crossed swords mark with grinding bar, incised model number D. 83, impressed marks 95 and 163, painter's number 68 Cybele, the Phrygian earth goddess with mural crown, key and cornucopia sitting on a lion Surrounded by four putti with flowers and crops Oval naturalistic earth and rock base From the series of the Four Elements Dimensions: 25 x 21 x 18 cm Good, restored condition, second choice Magnificent group by the French model master Michel Victor Acier and his assistant Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805) The beautiful porcelain figurine group of the 'Earth" was designed by Michel Victor Acier in 1775 with the assistance of Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805) as part of a series of the four elements. Detailed and with varied movements, the group depicts in the center Cybele, the Phrygian earth goddess with mural crown, seated on a lion. She holds a cornucopia and a key in her hands and is surrounded by four charming putti with different attributes. Born in Versailles, Michel Victor Acier, a great-grandfather of the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, was responsible for the artistic design of Meissen porcelain from 1775. From 1780, he worked as a Royal Saxon model master in Dresden and counted King Friedrich II among his favorers. The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, the incised model number D. 83, the impressed marks 95 and 163 and the painter's number 68. The figure is of second choice and optically in good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals a number of restored points affecting the arms, the leaves and the base. Parts of the rake, the garland and the robe of a putto are missing. The dimensions of the figural group are 25 x 21 x 18 cm. Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality - the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners - and extremely expensive.

Verner Panton, 10 Sample Fabrics, Mira-X, Switzerland, 1980s

Lot 5: Verner Panton, 10 Sample Fabrics, Mira-X, Switzerland, 1980s

by Auctionata

October 22, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €4,800 - €6,000

Description: Various printed textiles Switzerland, 1980s Design: Verner Panton (1926-1998) - Danish designer and architect Manufactured by Mira-X, Switzerland Each with original manufacturer's label Exhibited at the Danish furniture fair in Copenhagen and Brussels 1987/88 Dimensions: c. 260 x 130 cm, pattern Terzo: c. 150 x 130 cm Very good condition Provenance: Belgian private collection A comprehensive collection of fabric samples from the 1980s, some with rare pattern designs This collection comprises ten textile samples with various print patterns, produced by Mira-X. Specifically, these include the patterns Columba and Diora from 1983, Orion and Rubin from 1984, Opal from 1984-85, Cinna and Magnum from 1985, Secundo from 1987 and the two patterns Terzo, Quarto. As ever Panton built the patterns of the multi-colored designs from the three basic geometric forms circle, triangle and square. But whereas in the 1960s and 70s large-scale and simple repeats in bright colors were creating the typical look of Pop Art and the Space Era, Panton's designs from the 1980s are complex and detailed. The colors too are more muted. In 1987 and 1988 Verner Panton was the curator of the furniture fair in Copenhagen and Brussels, where these samples, stretched on wooden frames, were exhibited. The fabrics measure c. 260 x 130 cm (on fabric with the pattern Terzo measures c. 150 x 130 cm). They are in excellent condition with minimal signs of age and wear. Verner Panton (1926-1998) The Danish architect and designer Verner Panton is one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century. After studying at the Technical University in Odense and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen he worked for Arne Jacobsen. He quickly developed his own personal style. Panton preferred artificial materials and loud colors, conferring the pop art aesthetic to furniture and interior decoration, which strongly influenced our image of the sixties and seventies. His designs such as the Panton Chair and the Moon Lamp are considered as milestones of design history until the present day. One of the most important clients of the factory was Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), so that the factory gained a great importance and Louis XV decided the construction of the Sèvres manufactory.
