Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximi

Lot 3346: Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximi

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 26, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $32,500 - $45,000

Description: Fantastic Royal Quality German Damascus Hunting Sword with Silver Furniture, Gold Embellishment, Extensive Engraving and Sculpted Scenes from the Hunt and Classical Mythology, and a Matching Field Knife and Scabbard Bearing the Coat of Arms of Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria Produced by an unknown Damascus smith, this sword may be the finest example of the German huntsmen sidearm yet to come up for sale at our auction. A standard piece of equipment from the days of crossbows and spears well into the gunpowder age, the hunting sword was the tool of choice to give a clean end to a wounded animal, and could well be the hunters final line of defense against an enraged or cornered animal, an especially prominent danger during boar hunts. While the professional hunters who would accompany royal parties favored clean, businesslike swords, noblemen who joined or hosted those hunts needed to put forth a good face to their peers and would pay through the nose for a sword that would both get the job done and let them not get shown up by their colleagues. Measuring 33 1/2 inches overall, the core of the weapon is a 28 inch spear point Damascus blade which is fitted with a 5 1/2 inch false edge, wide single fullers and a narrow full length tang which has been fitted from the pommel down to the sheath tip with fine silver, much of it gold washed for engraving contrast and all of it bearing the repeating hallmarks of "BI" and "13". Additional gold highlighting and engraving are present on the blade with both fullers decorated with a 7 1/2 inch scene of a grotesque dragon head breathing scroll foliate fire, and a hunting dog pursuing a wild hare through the flames, and both sides of the ricasso have a 3 1/4 inch long scene of a pair of hunting dogs bringing down prey in the woods, a boar on the left and a stag on the right. The clamshell languet is equipped with a green felt pad and an extended lip to protect the scabbard throat and keep moisture out of the scabbard when sheathed. Measuring nearly 3 inches across, the face of the languet is decorated with a deeply sculpted and gold backwash rendering of a scene from mythology, the death of the hunter Actaeon. Noted by the Greeks as one of the great mythological hunters, stories of his death varied in the setup, but the ending was always the same; he transgresses against Artemis, goddess of the hunt, who transforms him into a stag and watches as he is torn to shreds by his own personally trained pack of hunting dogs. One variation, where Actaeon happened upon Artemis as she bathed in a spring and made advances the virgin goddess found intolerable, is depicted here with the goddess wearing the crescent moon as a crown and turning away from the hunter to hide her naked form, while the head and forelimbs of a stag poke out of the huntsmen clothing, a hunting dog near his still-human legs. The choice of this scene is open to speculation; hubris was a common thread in Actaeon stories, and it may have been meant as a reminder to a confident man that the hunt was not without danger. Smaller scenes of comparable detail and depth are present all over the hilt with a large rabbit and a wheel lock-equipped hunter resting with his dog on the sides of the counter-guard, an alert fox and a huntsman holding his dog by the scruff of the neck on the knuckleguard, and a mountain goat and a standing bear on the grip, as well as a sculpted grotesque face on the rear quillion and a dragon head on the base of the knuckleguard. A pair of stag horn panels are mounted to the grip, each fitted with a set of three silver clamshell ornaments. The sheath is fine brown leather with sculpted and gold washed scroll designs on the throat, suspension band and tip. A small utility knife tucks into a pocket in the front of the throat, concealed by the languet, which measures 8 1/2 inches long with a 5 inch clip point blade, silver furniture engraved and gold embellished to match the rest of the set (sans hallmarks), and a pair of horn grips secured with hollow brass rivets. The rear of the throat is engraved with the coat of arms of Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria and Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, flanked with cherub supporters and topped with the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor. A founding member of the Catholic League, a coalition of German states arranged against the pro-Lutheran League of Evangelical Union, Maximilian was a major participant in the Thirty Years War and in 1621 he would receive the title of Elector and the territory of the Upper Palatinate which were stripped from his cousin Frederick V after the Bohemian uprising. This absorption of land and title led to the reconfiguration of the Duke's coat of arms as seen on this scabbard, which would remain constant until the formation of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine. The blade shows a well aged gray steel patina with a few light nicks on the edge and the engraving showing crisp, well detailed lines and over 90% of the original gold. The silver components show areas of near-black antique patina and lighter areas of rubbing with the high spots on the sculpted decoration showing a nice bright contract from the deeper, darker recesses. A very tiny hole is present in the languet immediately behind Actaeon's left knee which does not detract from the overall beauty of the decoration. The scabbard is good with a few light dings and tiny cracks around the mouth and some light scuffing on the leather. The field knife is very good, with A well aged patina on the steel and silver, mild patches of pitting and areas of metal fatigue on the blade. Taken as a whole, this is a top-notch piece of hunting equipment, a fantastic showcase of the cutler's art, and a fine combination of form and function that would stand out in virtually any collection of edged weapons, European or otherwise.

Post-War Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company First Model Luftwaffe General Officer's Style Sword

Lot 816: Post-War Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company First Model Luftwaffe General Officer's Style Sword

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: Post-War Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company First Model Luftwaffe General Officer's Style Sword Developed for wear by the top officers of the Luftwaffe, the General Officer Sword takes a number of design cues from the gentleman's dress swords of the 18th and 19th centuries resulting in a lightweight weapon that would look good while still being durable enough to withstand the rigors of daily wear and service use. Measuring 37 1/4 inches in overall length, the 31 inch straight single fuller blade is unmarked save for the WKC "helm" logo on the left ricasso and finished in nickel. The hilt is cast alloy with a gold colored finish showing scroll and floral decoration over much of the surface, an apple shaped counterguard with folding reverse marked "6" on the underside installed over the lightly upturned dual quillion cross guard, a "D" shaped knuckle bow, round ball pommel, flared pommel nut and a wire wrapped hardwood grip with a gilt Luftwaffe eagle badge on the obverse side. With a black leather scabbard fit with engraved gilt throat and tip. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Excellent as made in the post-war years. The blade is lightly frosted with a tiny amount of spotting and wear. A few light handling marks are present on the hilt with some smooth wear along the high edges. A small amount of play is present in the grip wire which shows a mixed aged patina. Otherwise, the hilt is tight and well fitted. The scabbard shows a small amount of scuffing and dings. A fine reproduction of a scarce Third Reich officer's sidearm.

Attractively Engraved and Gold Embellished European Military Sword, Attributed to the Household of Maurice de Saxe, Marshal General of France

Lot 1520: Attractively Engraved and Gold Embellished European Military Sword, Attributed to the Household of Maurice de Saxe, Marshal General of France

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $25,000

Description: Attractively Engraved and Gold Embellished European Military Sword, Attributed to the Household of Maurice de Saxe, Marshal General of France Produced by an unknown smith and devoid of makers marks, this sword is simultaneously a fine dress blade worthy of wearing to court and a rugged weapon of combat, and where it was necessary to compromise they did so in favor of combat utility. Measuring 40 inches in overall length, the 32 3/4 inch blade is niter blued on the forte, with a series of gold accented wire etched floral and starburst patterns and a sequence of fourteen gold highlighted four-hole perforations. The blade geometry is interesting, with the forte having a rectangular cross section with triple fullers, a thin fuller along each edge and a deep and wide central fuller which invites comparison to modern industrial I-beams, transitioning to a hexagonal cross section for the rest of the blade. As a result, the forte shows rigidity well out of proportion to it's weight. The counter-guard is of a two-piece construction, showing an attractive brass panel with raised silver and brass laurels, lightning bolts and other royal symbols when sheathed, but when drawn and presented to the enemy all they would see is a flat, unadorned steel plate well suited to defense. The rest of the hilt is also gilt, with floral quillions, silver floral ornaments, a horse head on the underside of the guard, and the crest of Saxony topped with a Germanic princely crown on each side of the egg-shaped pommel. The grip is fine twist-carved ebony, with accents of silver beaded strings and gilt wire. Notes from the consignor attribute the sword to Maurice de Saxe, noted war hero and Marshal General of France. One of up to 354 illegitimate children of Augustus II, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, also known as the Saxon Hercules, Maurice spent a good deal of his youth abroad, taking up the military life at the age of 12. Distinguishing himself in service to the Prince of Savoy and Peter the Great of Russia, Maurice was acknowledged by his father, granted title, and returned home. By the age of 17, he had participated in multiple sieges and earned command of his own regiment. Briefly leaving the military to study mathematics in France, Maurice then entered the service of the French Crown, leading to further victory and achievement on the battlefield. In reward for his consistent and exceptional performance in war, he was awarded ownership of the Chateau de Chambord, personal hunting lodge of King Frederick I, as well as the title of Marshal General of France. To man and defend his new household, Maurice raised the Volontaires de Saxe, a cavalry force recruited from veterans of the War of the Austrian Succession. Following his death in 1750, his book on military strategy "Mes Reveries" (English title: My Reveries on the Art of War) was published, to mixed opinion; the historian Thomas Carlisle suggested that de Saxe was on opium when he dictated it, while Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery hailed it as a remarkable work. Maurice's Volontaires would go on to distinguish themselves later Seven Years War. The Chateau would survive the Revolution, be used as a field hospital during the Franco-Prussian War, and serve as the home for artwork evacuated from the Louvre during World War Two, and is today preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine, less scabbard. The unique pierced blade shows a few patches of pitting, chiefly near the tip, with bright wear on the edges and over 80% of the original niter blue and gold finishes. One section in particular a few inches down from the tip has been filed and reshaped, possibly to remove some rust or damage during the period of use. The steel guard panel show a mixed brown and gray patina, with a bright patch in the center where a cloth or leather pad might have been, and the brass hilt components are very good, with strong gold overall and a well aged patina on the exposed brass. The grip is very good, with 2 absent beaded strings, some shifting of the gilt wire, and a few small chips. Though no documentation has been found for this weapon, the features and construction lend credence to the theory that it was constructed by a master bladesmith for a man who needed to look good, but had the hard-earned knowledge of the importance of a rugged and agile sidearm.

Rare Transitional Beretta Model 1932 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Italian Navy Markings, as Documented in

Lot 736: Rare Transitional Beretta Model 1932 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Italian Navy Markings, as Documented in "Beretta Automatic Pistols" by J.B. Wood

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 24, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $4,000

Description: Rare Transitional Beretta Model 1932 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Italian Navy Markings, as Documented in "Beretta Automatic Pistols" by J.B. Wood Produced in limited numbers, the Beretta Model 1931 and 1932 were the forerunners to the Model 1934, one of Italy's mainstay sidearms of the Second World War. The 1932 is the rarer of the two, with only about 1000 believed to have been made, with this one being a transitional model, retaining the "PISTOLA BERETTA 765 BREV. 1915-1919 Mo1931" marking on the slide while showing the more contoured back strap of the 1932. Blade front and dovetail rear sights, with matching numbers on the slide, frame and barrel, "BF" and "shield" stamps on the left side of the frame, and smooth grips with "R(anchor)M" Royal Italian Navy medallions. Pictures of this pistol can be found on page 62 of "Beretta Automatic Pistols" by J.B. Wood, who describes the pistol on the facing page, noting that the Model 1932 is "perhaps the rarest of the regular production guns". Manufacturer: Beretta Pietro Model: 1931 BBL: 3 1/4 inch round Stock: Gauge: 7.65 mm auto Finish: blue Grips: hardwood Serial Number: 406940 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Very fine, with 80% of the original blue finish, showing mild brown spotting, bright edge wear and scattered handling marks. Rare Chinese Model 77 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot 3325: Rare Chinese Model 77 Semi-Automatic Pistol

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 26, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $5,000

Description: Rare Chinese Model 77 Semi-Automatic Pistol Developed in the 1970s and released in the early 1980s, the Type 77 was designed by the same team of People's Liberation Army engineers responsible for the Type 64 Pistol and the Type 64 Silenced Pistol as a dedicated police sidearm. Reaching back several decades in arms design, the PLA team resurrected the "Einhander" system of Lignose with the front of the trigger guard doubling as a lever to rack the slide with the shooting hand alone. Improving on the European design, the 77's cocking lever automatically disconnects from the slide when fully retracted, and after a short let-up can be squeezed to fire the pistol. A manual safety on the left side of the frame gives the user the choice of transporting the pistol with an empty chamber and racking the slide with their trigger finger before use, or using the more conventional "cocked and locked" loaded-chamber method. Fixed sights, with "316 77(Chinese symbol) 0925953" on the slide, checkered grips with 5-point star imprints, and a lanyard ring. NOTE: Do not mistake this pistol for the more common 77B export model; this is the original, straight-blowback Model 77 in the proprietary Chinese 7.62x17 chambering. The consignor states this is the only example in the United States. While we have not verified that it is the only one, we didn't come across any others in our research and have sold no Model 77s in the past. Manufacturer: Chinese Model: 77 BBL: 3 3/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 7.62x17 Rimless Finish: blue Grips: plastic Serial Number: 0925953 Class: Modern Handgun Condition: Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish showing some light handling marks and surface blemishes on the metal and grips. Mechanically excellent.
