H.M. ROYAL YACHT OPHIR (1901)

Lot 48: H.M. ROYAL YACHT OPHIR (1901)

by Charles Miller Ltd

October 29, 2014, 12:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £300 - £400

Description: H.M. ROYAL YACHT OPHIR (1901) an impressive ship's badge, removed from one of the two 32-foot steam cutters carried aboard Ophir during her royal tenure, the oval copper plate depicting the yacht's distinctive device of a Tudor rose within a royal garter engraved Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense and laid upon the stock of a crowned anchor, with rope-twist border -- 12½ x 9½in. (32 x 24cm.), mounted on a wooden oval for display, an interesting relic of the rare charter of a commercial vessel for royal duty; sold with a printed copy of the illustrated mss. journal of Petty Officer Harry Price, RN, entitled The Royal Tour, 1901, or the Cruise of H.M.S. Ophir, publ. by Webb & Bower, Exeter, 1980 Ophir was a highly distinctive twin-screw steamer ordered for the Orient Line's prestigious Australian service in 1891. Built by Robert Napier & Sons at Glasgow, she was registered at 6,814 tons gross (2,920 net) and measured 465 feet in length with a 53½ foot beam. Powered by two of her builder's own triple-expansion engines she could make 18 knots at full speed and, whilst she had passenger accommodation in three classes, her first class public rooms were particularly lavish. In fact, so luxurious were her appointments that she proved a logical choice when the government found it necessary to charter a suitable liner to convey the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary) on their overseas tour in 1901. After minor modifications, including the positioning of two 32-foot steam cutters over the poop, and thereafter repainted in her new white livery, Ophir left Portsmouth on 16th March 1901 for the first-ever Royal Tour in the modern sense. Every continent in the Empire was visited except India, and by the end of the seven-month voyage, she had steamed 45,000 miles. Returning to commercial sailings the following year, her royal connection made her even more popular with the travelling public although her running costs were so high that she was frequently laid up during the low season. Serving as an armed merchant cruiser during the Great War, she was paid off for the last time in 1919 and broken up in 1922.

De-Acquisitioned 12-Pound Carronade

Lot 18: De-Acquisitioned 12-Pound Carronade

by Carol Watson's Orange Coast Auctions

November 22, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Irvine, CA, USA

Description: De-acquisitioned 12 Pound Carronade, captured or salvaged from the British in the War of 1812 and mounted on its present carriage. (Although the present carriage is the later American and not the Royal Navy original.) Recovered as de-acquisition from the Maritime Museum in Savanna, Georgia, where it had languished gathering dust for decades. Supposedly, in the interest of protecting it from the coastal ocean air of Savanna, the whole piece, gun and carriage, was coated with a thick layer of orange anti-fouling paint and then covered with a heavy coat of black naval grade paint. The touch hole was filled in with copper. Our consignor restored the touch hole, applied multiple coats of linseed oil to the wood, replaced the original wheels, two of which had collapsed and split apart and all four of which had worn too flat to turn, due to having been crudely made of soft wood in the early 19th Century. The original stool bed was missing as was the quoin. Removal of the paint revealed the long-lost serial number ''T/115'' and the designation ''S.B. 12 pr.'' Guns were sometimes made for specific ships, which may explain the initials ''S.B.''. All original hardware has been retained and iron tires added to comply with Royal Navy deck guns. The barrel shows some traces of its use in combat. In addition to a chip out of the muzzle ring, there are multiple small splinter marks on the muzzle standoff. An interesting side point: The Duke of Wellington is said to have preferred iron guns made at Carron (the origin of this design and a place noted at the time primarily for bell foundering) because they didn't explode as often as other makes. The truth of this was soon borne out at Waterloo. Barrel length to ball: 41''. Outside dia. of barrel at mouth: 7-1/4''; inside dia. of barrel at mouth: 5-1/2''. Est.: $15,000-$20,000.

Lot 45: Yoruba, Royal Court Maternity Figure, Wood, Nigeria, c. 1920

by Auctionata

November 5, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,080 - €2,600

Description: Medium light wood with polychrome pigments Yoruba people, Nigeria, circa 1920Seated figure with a baby attached to the back and nursing in the frontVery fine figure carved for a shrine within the royal courtSurface with old dry patinaHeight: 64 cmGood condition Provenance: Private collection, Potsdam Certainly a piece carved by a master carver; for a similar example see Sotheby's New York, 20 May 1987, lot 262 and most probably by the same handThis superb figure, in a seated position, with a baby attached to the back and nursing baby in the front is of exceptional quality. It was carved circa 1920 by the Yoruba people for a shrine within the royal court. The surface shows nearly a century of old dry patina, with subtle polychrome pigments of white, black and ochre. The coiffure is finely layered in braid form, the eyes are carved in coffee bean shape with an expressive nose and mouth. In Yoruba culture twins are of particular importance, as this specific ethnic group has the highest twinning rate in the world. It is thus not surprising that the present maternity figure is depicted with two infants.Literature:Stefan Eisenhofer (ed.), Kulte, Künstler, Könige in Afrika, Linz 1997William Fagg, Yoruba. Sculpture of West Africa, New York 1982The sculpture is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. There are some drying cracks, minor losses and light abrasions to the surface. The height measures 64 cm. (tfa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
