JAMES BAMA - SAGE GRINDER

Lot 159W: JAMES BAMA - SAGE GRINDER

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $760 - $950

Description: James Bama - Sage Grinder - Image Size: 18"w X 14"h. Limited Edition Of: 75?.the Whitney Gallery Of Western Art At The Buffalo Bill Historical Society In Cody, Wyoming Provides One Of The Most Concise Descriptions Of James Bama?s Artwork It Has Been Our Pleasure To Read: "the Artist's Natural Talent, Academic Training, And Practical Professional Experience As An Illustrator Equipped Him With The Tools To Succeed As An Easel Painter. Influenced By Photography, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, And Illustration, Bama Fused These Media And Styles Into An Ultra-detailed Brand Of Realism Based On Complex Compositions. Unlike Many Artists Working In The American West Today, He Steadfastly Refused To Paint The Old West But Instead Dedicated His Career To Painting Real People Of The Modern West. His Detailed Portraits Capture The Ethnic And Cultural Complexity Of The American West Through People Who Live Simultaneously In Two Worlds." "sage Grinder" Is One Of Bama?s Most Recognized Paintings And A Perfect Example Of His Vision For Capturing The West. ?my Model For This Painting,? Begins Bama, ?was A Young Navajo Girl, A Student At Brigham Young University. One Summer, On The Outskirts Of Cody, She And A Number Of Other Indians Re-created An Early Native Village To Demonstrate The Manner In Which The Indians Lived Before The Arrival Of Columbus. Charging Admission, They Taught Such Crafts As Sage-grinding, Cooking And The Making Of Weapons. The Entire Encampment Was All Very Well Done. It Was A Rare Opportunity For Me To Pose Them And To Produce A Series Of Paintings ('pre-columbian Indian With Atlatl' & 'pre-columbian Indian' Are Included In This Group). Before The Summer Ended They Packed Up Camp And Disappeared. I Have Not Heard From Them Since.? The Workshop Anniversary Fine Art Edition Of "sage Grinder" Puts On Canvas What Could Previously Only Be Viewed Under Glass. At 18? X 14? You Can See The Extraordinary Attention To Detail That Once Led A Collector To X-ray A James Bama Painting To Determine Whether He Had Actually Painted An Original Work Art Or Doctored A Photograph (the X-ray Proved It Was A Painting). No Western Art Collection Could Be Complete Without The Inclusion Of A James Bama Painting As Part Of It. The Anniversary Edition Canvas Of "sage Grinder" Is Truly One Of James Bama?s Best.

In Fact, He (and Howard Terpning®) Have Won The Award Twice! Morgan?s First Prix De West Award Came In 2001 For "the Dance" And The Second In 2008 For "indian Stories." As Morgan Relates, The Model For "the Artist" May One Day Show In The Prix De West As Well: "the Idea For This Painting Came Very Naturally. My Daughter, Brittany, Is Following In Her Parents Footsteps And Is Quite The Artist At 14. (morgan?s Wife, Jo Ann, Paints Under The Name J. Peralta). "she Has Posed For Me Many Times, Notably In 'the Dance.' Here, She Is A Girl Set With Kitchen Tasks But Has Put Them Aside To Partake In Her First Love, Painting. Although She Should Be Peeling Those Potatoes, She Would Rather Set Up Items From Her Mother's 1890s Country Kitchen And Paint A Still Life In Watercolor. Behind Her On The Cabinet, Other Paintings Are Pinned. I Tried To Portray That Intensity Of Young Inspiration To Be An Artist. It's An Unstoppable Force When Given The Right Encouragement."

ANDREW DENMAN - PRIMARY

Lot 695W: ANDREW DENMAN - PRIMARY

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $960 - $1,200

Description: Andrew Denman - Primary - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - - Image Size: 22"w X 22"h. Limited Edition Of: 75?.?sometimes All Signs Point To The Need To Paint A Certain Painting And That Was Certainly The Case With 'primary,'? Relates Andrew Denman. ?a Local Gallery Owner Called To Let Me Know Of The Unfortunate Demise Of A Beautiful Red-breasted Sapsucker And Offered Me The Chance To Collect The Bird. I Wanted To Honor The Bird And This Dramatic Trompe L?oeil Treatment, The Primary Colors And The Symmetrical Composition, Lend The Piece The Iconic Feel I?d Envisioned. One Gets The Sense Of This Beautiful Woodpecker Rising Again. ?i Had Already Laid My Model To Rest When I Realized That The Composition Would Not Be Complete Without The Fallen Feather In The Lower Part Of The Picture. I Was Kicking Myself For Not Having Kept A Few Of The Sapsucker?s Feathers When I Remembered That My Grandmother Had Given Me An Envelope Of Feathers She?d Collected From Her Property A Week Earlier That I Had Not Yet Opened. Sure Enough, Among Them Was The Feather I Needed! Although The Red-breasted Sapsucker Is Not A Rare Bird, I Had Not Seen One In The More Than Twenty Years I?d Lived In The San Francisco Bay Area And My Grandmother Had Randomly Found Just The Feather I Needed At Precisely This Time. It?s Extraordinary. To Add To The Magic, I Was Taking A Walk Not Two Blocks From My House A Week After I Finished This Painting When One Of These Splendid Birds Flew Right Across My Path. It Felt As Though Nature Were Speaking To Me, Giving Me A Little Nod Of Encouragement And Approval.?

Explains Judy Larson. ?on The Morning Of September 8, Colonel Wright And His Troops Spotted A Large Cloud Of Dust Which Revealed The Position Of 800 Palouse Horses. At A Young Age, Hansel Demonstrated His Artistic Ability; Throughout His Life, He Never Swayed From His Dream Of Becoming An Artist. As Long As The Artist Can Recall, His Love Of Wildlife And The Outdoors Have Inspired His Work So He May Share His Vision Of Nature?s Wonders. The World Hansel Paints Is Not Always The World He Sees. At The Age Of Twelve, He Was Diagnosed With A Degenerative Eye Condition, Which Has Left Him Legally Blind. Working Only One Or Two Inches Away From The Canvas, Hansel Painstakingly Paints In The Details Of A Work, While Forming In His Mind A Clear Picture Of The Finished Painting. Hansel Also Relies On His Camera To Capture His Ideas And Bring Them Into Focus. He Uses Photographs To Bring The Landscapes And The Wildlife Models Back To His Studio. At This Stage Of Starting A Painting, He Enlarges The Photographs, If Necessary, To See Them More Clearly. Amazingly, The Artist Then Gazes Through His Glasses And Commences His First Brush Strokes As His Painting Comes To Life A Few Square Inches At A Time. Hansel?s Visual Challenges Require Him To Spend More Time On A Painting Adding His Details Than Many Artists?.sometimes Working Four Months On A Single Canvas. Hansel Wants His Artwork To Be Judged On Its Own Merit, Not On The Basis Of An Artist With A Visual Impairment. Description: Alan Bean - Lone Star - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - - Image Size: 33"w X 22"h. Limited Edition Of: 250?."some Months After I Had Reported To The Manned Spacecraft Center In Houston, Texas, I Was Given A Silver Astronaut Pin To Wear In My Lapel. It Was A Shooting Star With An Orbit Around Its Tail. I Wore That Pin Proudly Until November, 1969, When Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon And I Climbed Into Our Apollo Xii Spacecraft For Our Flight To The Moon. I Had My Silver Pin Tucked Safely In The Left Thigh Pocket Of My Spacesuit And While It Was Still There, I Descended The Lunar Module Ladder For My First Steps On The Ocean Of Storms. "oh, So Carefully, I Removed My Silver Pin, Took One Last Look At It And Gave It My Strongest Underarm Toss Toward Surveyor. I Can Still Remember How It Flashed In The Bright Sunlight Then Disappeared In The Distance. It Was The Only Star I Ever Saw Up In That Black Sky, The Sunlight Was Just Too Bright On The Moon's Surface To See Any Of The Others. I Often Think Of My Silver Pin Resting In The Dust Of The Surveyor Crater, Just As Bright And Shiny As It Ever Was. It'll Be There For Millions And Millions Of Years Or Until Some Tourist Finds It And Brings It Back To Earth."

Mastering His Visual Limitations, He Has Learned To Create Beautifully-detailed Images With Magnification And Low-vision Aids. This Determination And Being Blessed With A Talent To Create His Outstanding Images Have Brought Him National Recognition. Since His First Print Release In 1987, He Has Produced Nearly 100 Limited Editions, And Many Have Sold Out. The Artist?s Attention To Detail And Distinctive, Colorful Landscapes Are Very Popular With Art Collectors Nationwide.
