by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: MARTHA WEST BARE (American, 1864-1940) Still Life with Chrysanthemums in an Oriental Vase, circa 1885 Oil on canvas 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Signed lower right: M. Bare FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Little is known about the talented 19th-century still-life painter, Martha West Bare of Philadelphia, whose few known works bear a strong resemblance to those of Milne Ramsey, another Philadelphian with whom she may have trained. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1888-1890, at the National Academy of Design in 1890, and at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. In 1895 she married Russell T. Boswell, a lawyer of note, and in the 1900 census, at age 36, they are listed in Philadelphia. Her obituary states: "The couple moved to Washington, D.C. about 1926, shortly after her husband was appointed an attorney for the Department of the Interior." Her known artwork seems to pre-date her marriage.

Condition Report: Original unlined canvas on original stretchers. Along left edge there is a thin line of loss along a paint scratch which probably developed through contact with an ill-fitting frame.

Estimated Price: €2,880 - €3,600

Description: Oil on canvas, relinedNetherlands, 18th centuryCircle of Jean Baptiste Bosschaert (1667 - 1746) - Flemish painterAccompanied by an expertise of Professor Justus Müller Hofstede (1981) Gilt stucco frameOverall dimensions, framed: 59 x 50.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, Germany18th century colorful and lively small sized Flemish still life of flowers The present painting is the work of an artist active in the circle of the Flemish artist Jean Baptiste Bosschaert, and dates from the 18th century. It depicts a decorative floral still life, which is characterized by a fine brushwork and fresh vibrant colors. The bronze urn is filled with a variety of flowers, including carnations, jasmine, narcissi, chrysanthemums, convolvulus, irises and lilies. The painting is mounted in a gilt stucco frame. The paint surface has been consolidated in the darker areas and has oxidized in parts. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the foreground and the foliage, as well as strengthening to darker details. The frame shows minor wear. The overall dimensions, framed, are 59 x 50.5 cm. The stretcher measures 45 x 37 cm. The painting is accompanied by an expertise of Professor Justus Müller Hofstede (1981), who fully ascribed the painting to Jean Baptiste Bosschaert.Jean Baptist Bosschaert (1667-1746)Jean Baptiste Bosschaert was born in Antwerp , where he was active throughout his life. He trained with the flower painter Jan Baptist de Crépu. In 1693, he became a master of the Antwerp Guild. Bosschaert mainly painted still lifes and flower depictions. Ottmar Elliger the Elder, Still life with Flowers, Red Admiral Butterfly and a Grasshopper

Lot 1092: Ottmar Elliger the Elder, Still life with Flowers, Red Admiral Butterfly and a Grasshopper

by Lempertz

May 16, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €100,000 - €120,000

Description: Signed and dated lower left: Ottmar. Elliger. fecit. A °. 1667. The painter and author Arnold Houbraken wrote in 1718 that Elliger was a pupil of Daniel Seghers in Antwerp. His early works display the influence of the German-Netherlandish still life painter Jacob Marrel, who was active in Frankfurt at the time. Elliger presumably worked in Copenhagen for several years during the 1650s before moving to Amsterdam where he married the sister of the painter Jacob van Walscapelle in 1660. He is known to have lived in Hamburg in 1666 and became court painter to Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg in Berlin in 1670, along with Willem Fredericksz. van Royen. Elliger mainly painted portraits and still lifes, and dated works of his are recorded between 1653 and 1678. The present signed and dated work was painted in Germany in 1667. The delicate, carefully spaced depiction of the flowers is typical of the contemporary German taste. The work displays a plethora of different blooms, including yellow iris, tulips, peonies, forget-me-nots, chrysanthemums, daffodils, harebells, anemones, aquilegias, lily of the valley, roses and a pink. Elliger appears to have had a penchant for depicting the undersides of blooms, as seen in the white peonies in the lower left corner. The harmonic interplay of the white petals with the contrasting calyx and the complex, reversed depiction of the hanging flower all testify to Elliger's prowess as a painter, as do the fine reflections in the water droplets on the grey stone bench. The green grasshopper and the red admiral butterfly present a fine contrast to the otherwise monochrome background of the work. Ottmar Elliger the Elder
