by Bibliopathos

March 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Milano, Italy

Estimated Price: €1,000 - €1,200

Description: THE DOGMATIC THEOLOGY OF JESUITS, 8 VOLUMES Petavius, Dionysius - Thomas, J. B.. Dionysii Petavii opus de theologicis dogmatibus. Barri-Ducis, Guerin, 1866.8 volumes in 4to, half vellum. Fundamental Petau's theological masterpiece, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of Christian doctrine from the historical point of view. CONTENT: 1: In quo de Deo deique proprietatibus agitur. 6: In quo rursum de incarnatione verbi agitur. 7: In quo rursum de incarnatione verbi postea de diversis et primum de ecclesiastica hierarchia agitur. 8: In quo rursum de ecclesiastica hierarchia, postea de poenitentia agitur. Denis Petau (1583-1652), also known as Dionysius Petavius, was a French Jesuit theologian. He was one of the most brilliant scholars in a learned age. Petau was born at Orleans, where he had his initial education; he then attended the University of Paris, where he successfully defended his theses for the degree of Master of Arts, not in Latin, but in Greek. After this he followed the theological lectures at the Sorbonne, and, on the advice of Nicolas Ysambert, successfully applied for the chair of philosophy at Bourges. At Paris he formed a friendship with Isaac Casaubon, then librarian at the royal library, where he spent all his spare time studying the ancient Greek manuscripts. At Orleans he was ordained deacon and presented with a canonry. In 1603 he was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Bourges, but resigned his place two years later, in order to enter the Society of Jesus. After spending two years at Bourges he returned to Paris, and began a correspondence with Fronton du Duc, the editor of John Chrysostom. In 1605 he became a Jesuit, taught rhetoric at Reims (1609), La Flèche (1613), and at the Collège de Clermont (1618). During this last period he began a correspondence with the Bishop of Orleans, Gabriel de Laubepine (Albaspinaeus), on the first year of the primitive Church. Beginning in 1622, he taught positive theology for twenty-two years, and during this time he left France on only two occasions: first in 1629, to teach ecclesiastical history at Madrid at the invitation of Philip IV; second in 1639 to become a cardinal at Rome where Pope Urban VIII wanted him. At sixty years of age he stopped teaching, but retained his office of librarian, in which he had succeeded Fronton du Duc (1623), and devoted the rest of his life to his great work, the Dogmata theologica. Condition Report: Usual light foxing, but a very fine set.

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: M.N. Nathan and Lewis Ashenheim. Announcement to the Jewish Public of Jamaica... [plans to publish Jamaica's first Jewish periodical "Bikooray Hayom," The First Fruits of the West]. [1] leaf (2 pages). Edges minimally frayed unaffecting text. 4to.• Announcing the intended publication of an exclusively Jewish monthly periodical - contingent however upon the financial support of the Jews in Jamaica themselves. Outlined here are the potential religious and educational benefits of the periodical, adding that the existence of such an independent Jewish organ would result in the Jews of Jamaica accruing a "more exalted station, amongst their Christian Brethren."Printed by R.J. Cordova in 1844, The First Fruits of the West was the first Jewish periodical in the West Indies. A total of ten issues were published. "The importance of the First Fruits of the West lies in the effort made to present Jewish history, traditions, rituals, literature and news in a 'popular idiom' for the layman. It was feared that unless such exertion occurred, Jamaican Jewry would be totally assimilated into the larger society." See Institute of Jamaica, Spanish & Portuguese Jews of Jamaica, in: The Jamaica Journal no. 43, p. 98.Of Dutch origin, Moses N. Nathan (1801-83) was Rabbi in Kingston and St. Thomas for two decades before accepting a position in 1850 to serve the pulpit in New Orleans and later Charleston. Scottish-born Lewis Ashenheim (1817-58) immigrated to Jamaica in the 1820's where he practiced as a physician. He married into the local Sephardic DeCordova family.Kingston, Jamaica, November 3rd, 1843.

by Heritage Auctions

March 28, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,600

Description: Royal Mail Travel Poster (1933). Stock Poster (25" X 40"). Kenneth Denton Shoesmith (1890-1929) was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors and the British Society of Poster Designers. He exhibited widely, and was enlisted by travel carriers such as the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Royal Mail Line to enhance the allure of maritime leisure voyages in the 1920s and 1930s. A perfect example is this full-bleed stock poster, with a powerful ocean liner streaking across the sea with the greatest of ease, dazzling passengers with luxury as new shores and adventures await. This poster would have been displayed both domestically and in other countries to list dates and destinations in the language of choice. Prior to restoration, there was a tear in the right border that extended into the background, and a chip at the bottom left. Fine+ on Linen.

Gonzales Coques (1618-1684), Circle, Family Portrait, 17th C.

Lot 61: Gonzales Coques (1618-1684), Circle, Family Portrait, 17th C.

by Auctionata AG

March 24, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €12,800 - €16,000

Description: Oil on canvas, relined Netherlands, 17th century Circle of Gonzales Coques (1618-1684) - Flemish portrait and history painter Dimensions: 138 x 185 cm Elaborate carved wooden frame: 153 x 200 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany A preferred portrait painter of the Antwerp bourgeoisie, Gonzales Coques (1618-1684) painted numerous family portraits that influenced significantly his artistic circle. Here is a typical 17th century portrait made by a painter from the circle of Coques, in which are featured the family members and their status in society. At the same time, the portrait becomes a Memento Mori through the memoires that holds the family head in hand. Condition The painting is overall in good condition, showing slight abrasion, paint losses to the margins and fine craquelure. In the lower area, there is a horizontal crease or pressure mark, which was reinforced on the relined canvas on the reverse. The inspection under UV light reveals some minor and major areas of retouching to the figures and the background, especially to the horizontal line. The frame shows light wear. The size of the painting is 138 x 185 cm, and the frame measures 153 x 200 cm.Gonzales Coques (1618-1684) Gonzales Coques studied with Pieter Breughel the Younger and David Ryckaert the Elder. Around 1640/41, he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. Coques stood in the service of Charles I of England, Frederik Hendrik of Orange and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. He was a popular portraitist and painted mostly small-format portraits in the style of Anton von Dyck, so that he was nicknamed 'Little van Dyck'. Works of Coques are found in major museum collections, including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

HISTORICAL FRENCH MODEL 1786 BRONZE ONE-POUNDER CANNON INSCRIBED

Lot 2086: HISTORICAL FRENCH MODEL 1786 BRONZE ONE-POUNDER CANNON INSCRIBED "EGALITE, LIBERTE" (EQUALITY & LIBERTY), CAPTURED DURING IRISH REBELLION OF 1798.

by James D. Julia

March 16, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Fairfield, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: NSN. This wonderful bronze three stage cannon inscribed "Egalite, Liberte" within a cartouche at breech, signed and dated by maker "Ramus Au Creusot" in 1794. M. Ramus was director of the foundry named Creusot. Le Creusot (Saone-et-Loire) originally set up as "Fonderie Royal" in 1781 was an important maker of cannon, especially for the Navy, and became one of the most important industrial manufacturers by the early 19th century; their cannon are rarely found. This cannon was recovered from the French ship "HOCHE"; a 74 gun French "ship of the line" which was captured by the English squadron in the Irish sea on October 12, 1798 according to a 1981 receipt from Holland & Holland, London. The HOCHE was on its way to assist the United Irishman and Irish volunteers against the British. This vessel's 74 large cannon were retained & reused by capturing British forces. Wolfe Tone, the leading figure in the "Society of United Irishmen" was captured on this vessel, which was the "coup de grace" for the Irish Rebellion. The British renamed this vessel HMS Donegal in honor of County Donegal where the French attempted to land to support the Irish in the 1798 Rebellion. HOCHE was the flagship of the French Fleet. HMS Donegal being totally refit had an illustrious naval career capturing both French and Spanish vessels including the capture of the AMFITRITE in November 1804 and the RAYO which had escaped Trafalgar October 1801; she served until 1845. Model "1786 Pierrier" is the official name for this popular swivel mounted cannon used world wide in the late 18th century. In 1786 the French formalized the first known 'model' of swivel cannon, a brass gun that followed exactly the 1767 pattern then in use for larger guns, except the little 2.0" caliber Pierrier did away with the vent astragal. Otherwise it is just half-size duplicate of the contemporary French 6-pounder gun." This particular gun is beautifully marked as can be seen in photos as well as having a great history. PROVENANCE: Holland & Holland 1981, Val Forgett, Jr. Collection, Springfield Arsenal, LLC Artillery Collection. CONDITION: Tube is about 40" overall, with 38" bbl length and smooth 2" bore. Trunnion to trunnion distance is about 9". Cannon is very good to fine overall with rich dark, smooth green patina & discernible markings as can be seen in photos. Cannon is mounted on an old naval style step carriage with wood wheel which is sound, solid and very good overall. 4-54092 JS128

A William IV weight-driven hook-and-spike wall clock Whitehurst and Son, Derby

Lot 44: A William IV weight-driven hook-and-spike wall clock Whitehurst and Son, Derby

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

March 17, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

Newbury, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £1,000 - £1,500

Description: A William IV weight-driven hook-and-spike wall clock Whitehurst and Son, Derby, circa 1834 The two train four pillar plated eight-day bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by standard fifteen-inch pendulum and stamped with serial number 4895 to backplate, the 9 inch circular white painted Roman numeral dial with gilt painted outer band, steel spade hands and signed WHITEHURST, DERBY to centre, the movement fitted with sheet metal dust covers, the rear with hanging hoop and spurs, 23cm (9ins) high. Provenance: the property of a private collector. Exhibited TIME & PLACE, English Country Clocks 1600-1840 The Antiquarian Horological Society at The Museum of the History of Science, University of Oxford, 25th November 2006 - 15th April 2007, exhibit number 68. Illustrated in Craven, Maxwell John Whitehurst of Derby page 193. John Whitehurst (I) was born in Congleton, Cheshire in 1713, he was apprenticed as a clockmaker to his father (of the same name) before setting up business in Derby in 1736 - the same year he installed a turret clock to the newly completed Guildhall. He was an accomplished maker and scientist who had a particular interest in geology. He moved to London in 1780 in order to take up position at the Royal Mint as 'Stamper of the Money Weights' as well as pursue his scientific interests. He was founder member of the Lunar Society and was elected to the Royal Society in 1783. He died in 1788 leaving the Derby clockmaking business to his nephew also called John (II) who in-turn took his son of the same name (John III) into partnership in 1809. The firm traded as 'Whitehurst & Son' until 1834 when the business reverted to just 'Whitehurst' on the death of John (II). The business continued under the Whitehurst name until the death of John (III) in 1855 when it was sold to Roskell of Liverpool who subsequently wound up operations in 1862. However a former employee, John Smith, resurrected the business which is still trading today as 'Smith of Derby'. The current lot utilises a simple but ingenious form of single-arbor countwheel warned striking which, by using pins fitted to the greatwheel (rather than slots in a countwheel) to lock the striking removes the need for the provision of overlift. This, coupled with the efficient layout of the going train (incorporating half-seconds period pendulum and chain pulley wind) exemplifies Whitehurst's approach to clockmaking which, in the case of the current lot, has resulted in a timepiece perfectly engineered for backstairs use. IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING THE CATALOGUING OF CLOCKS: Movements, dials and cases: movements and dials are described as relating to the cases in which they are housed in one of the following three ways: the case.... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial started life in the current case. in a case... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial are in a case of correct period and type (and may well be original to the movement and dial), however there is evidence to suggest that they may not have started out life together. now in a case... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial are no longer in the original case as it is not of correct period and/or type. Pendulums, weights, winding and case keys: unless specifically indicated otherwise in the catalogue description it can be assumed that all clocks with cases are sold with the requisite pendulum and correct number of weights (where appropriate), however we cannot guarantee that they are original to the clock. This excludes lantern clocks or loose movements which are more often than not offered without pendulums or weights. We do not indicate in the catalogue description whether winding or case keys are present with any specific clock. As many clocks are consigned without keys please check with the department to establish whether they are present or not prior to bidding. Condition: due to the mechanical nature of clocks and the fact that most are of great age we cannot offer any guarantee as to whether they are in working order or free from major faults or restoration. Although we endeavour to catalogue items in a fair and informed manner, omission of any comments or observations regarding the condition or originality of a clock in the description does not necessarily indicate that it is free from significant faults, restoration or is in working condition. We would strongly advise any prospective purchaser to view the item in person or request a condition report and/or further images prior to bidding. Measurements: dial measurements are given in inches, other dimensions such as height are given in centimetres and inches. The measurement given for the height of a longcase clock excludes any removable finials in order to provide an approximate minimum ceiling height in which the clock can be accommodated.
