Scott in 1929, by S Blanckensee & Sons Ltd., Birmingham,1929, in original fitted red leather & gilt tooled retailer's case for Mackay & Chisholm of Princes Street, Edinburgh, the cover of the cigarette case exquisitely enamelled with the arms of the Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh comprising two red jacketed golfers either side of the coat of arms for the City of Edinburgh with its Latin motto NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA [WITHOUT GOD EVERYTHING FAILS], beneath is inscribed with the Society's motto FAR AND SURE, the reverse of the case engraved ROYAL BURGESS GOLFING SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH, PRESENTED TO J.M. SCOTT, A TOKEN OF APPRECIATION OF THE CONSTANT TACT, INDUSTRY AND PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE SO SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED BY HIM AS TREASURER OF THE SOCIETY 1915-1917 AND 1921-1928, DECEMBER 1929, in fine, original unused condition, 8 by 11cm., 3 1/4 by 4 1/4in., weight 159gr. 5oz. 2dwt. Provenance: By family descent The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh traces its origins back into the eighteenth century with the first publicly recorded explicit reference to its existence in 1735 appearing in a nineteenth century edition of the Edinburgh Almanac. The founding members were the city's merchants, writers, bankers and others and they played their golf on Bruntsfield Links. On 2 July 1800, the Town Council granted to the Society a Seal of Cause whereby it became a legal corporation with power to hold property, make its own by-laws and regulations and promote the game of golf amongst its members. Shortly afterwards, the Burgess Society changed its motto from "Long and Far" to "Far and Sure" and from about 1787, the Society was known as the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society until by Royal Edict dated 30 September 1929 His Majesty King George V commanded that the name be changed to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. Due to increasing congestion and traffic on the Bruntsfield Links, the Society moved to Musselburgh in 1874 where they shared a course with The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society and the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club. However, golf had become so popular that by the 1880's Musselburgh too became overcrowded. The Honourable Company moved to Muirfield in 1891 and The Burgess Society also looked around for a home of its own. They eventually chose Barnton where the Course was formally opened on 3 May 1895 and the clubhouse completed two years later.

Thomas Earnshaw, London, Movement No. 763, 58 mm, 150 g, circa 1805

by Auktionen Dr. Crott

May 16, 2015, 5:00 PM CET

Frankurt, Germany

Estimated Price: €14,500 - €17,000

Description: A rare pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement and sugar-tongs temperature compensation Case: outer case - 18k pink gold, smooth, à goutte, case maker punch mark "IM". Inner case - 18k pink gold, smooth, case maker punch mark "IM". Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, gold spade hands. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, signed, chain/fusee, moulded movement pillars, spring detent escapement, three-arm steel balance, "sugar tongs"- temperature compensation for blued balance spring, florally engraved balance cock, engraved regulator scale, chatoned diamond endstone on balance, chatoned ruby endstone on escape wheel. Thomas Earnshaw (born 1749 in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire, died 1829 in London) worked from 1794 to 1795 at 119 High Holborn and then also at 87 FenchurchStreet. There can be no doubt that he is the inventor of a spring detent chronometer escapement that outperformed the competition and prevailed over the next one and a half centuries; he also formed the concept of a balance wheel made from brass and steel that was to become the foundation of the future compensation balance. In his pamphlet "Longitude: An Appeal to the Public?" Earnshaw (apart from attacking his enemies) describes the development of his chronometer escapement in great detail. His competitor John Arnold had the support of prominent people such as Sir John Banks, President of the Royal Society and Alexander Dalrymple, Hydrographer of the Admiralty. Many famous mariners used Earnshaw?s watches with great success though; for example, no. 520 was used by Matthew Flinders on his voyage around Australia and no. 465 was in the property of the astronomer Crosley, who travelledwith Flinders. When we look at the movement numbers listed by Tony Mercer in "Chronometer Makers of the World" on page 135, this pocket chronometer fits right into the series. Cond.: Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running.

Description: [DISCOVERY VOYAGE.] A sterling silver salver signed in facsimile by eight participants of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904, more commonly known as the Discovery Voyage. N.p., October 5, 1918. Presented as a wedding gift to Royal Navy officer CHARLES ROYDS (1876-1931), the Discovery's first lieutenant after whom Cape Royds in Antarctica is named. Our sterling silver salver with scalloped rope edge and four ball and claw feet is inscribed with the seal of the Discovery Voyage depicting icebergs and a penguin encircled within a heraldic belt. Below the seal is the engraved inscription "To Captain C.W. Royds R.N. on his marriage October 5th 1918 from his old messmates in the 'Discovery' 1901-1904." Surrounding the inscription are the engraved signatures of: MICHAEL BARNE (1877-1961; "Michael Barne"). Barne's responsibilities as a member of Scott's Discovery expedition was to keep records of the voyage. A recipient of the Polar Medal, Barne "had been a shipmate of Scott on the Majestic... [and] was appointed second officer by the committee in June 1900. His duties including assisting Armitage with magnetic studies and taking charge of deep-sea temperature research," (Pilgrims on the Ice: Robert Falcon Scott's first Antarctic Expedition, Baughman). An Antarctic cape, glacier and inlet are named after him. GEORGE FRANCIS ARTHUR MULOCK (1882-1963; "George F.A. Mulock"). Mulock had joined the relief vessel Morning that resupplied Scott's ships in the Antarctic. In 1902, he came aboard the Discovery to replace Ernest Shackleton who had fallen ill. Mulock served as a surveyor and cartographer during the mission, publishing his results as Survey Work of the National Antarctic, 1901-04, for which he was awarded the Polar Medal. He had a distinguished career in both World War I and II, during which time he was held captive by the Japanese. The Mulock Inlet and Glacier are named in his honor. Marine biologist THOMAS VERE HODGSON (1864-1926; "T.V. Hodgson") did pioneering work aboard the Discovery and was the first person to describe the Antarctic's deep sea floor. Prior to joining the Discovery, he had been a member of Carsten Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition (1898-1901). Cape Hodgson in the Ross Archipelago is named after him. LOUIS BERNACCHI (1876-1942; "L. C. Bernacchi") was a Tasmanian physicist and astronomer of Italian extraction. His first polar journey was with Carsten Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition (1898-1901), along with Hodgson (above). For his work on the Discovery voyage, Bernacchi was decorated by the Royal Geographical Society and awarded the Légion d'Honneur. Scott was the best man at his wedding. Bernacchi explored regions of Africa and South America, wrote several books on the Antarctic, was a member of the Royal Geographic Society, and served in the British and United States military during World War I. His attempts to raise funds for a 1925 Antarctic expedition failed. Antarctica's Bernacchi Head and Bay honor his name. Royal Navy officer REGINALD W. SKELTON (1872-1956; "Reginald W. Skelton") was the Discovery's chief engineer and official photographer. Despite the longstanding friendship between Scott and Skelton, he was passed over as second-in-command on Scott's fatal 1910 Terra Nova expedition. An Antarctic inlet and three glaciers are named in his honor. CYRIL LONGHURST ("Cyril Longhurst") was the secretary of the Discovery expedition and served as best man at Shackleton's wedding. Mount Cyril in Antarctica is named after him. HARTLEY TRAVERS FERRAR (1879-1932; "H.T. Ferrar") was born in Ireland, raised in South Africa and educated as a geologist in England. A relatively young and inexperienced member of the voyage, Ferrar met the woman he would marry while the Discovery was docked in New Zealand. His expedition duties included making geological surveys, classifying what became known as the Ferrar or Beacon sandstone layer and discovering the first Antarctic fossils. He later conducted geological research in Egypt, Palestine and New Zealand. The Ferrar Glacier is named for him. Scottish Royal Navy captain ALBERT B. ARMITAGE (1864-1943; "Albert B. Armitage"), was the Discovery's second-in-command. "Armitage had been second in command of the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Spitsbergen. In recognition of this, he received the Murchison award from the R[oyal] G[eographical] S[ociety]. Armitage was the oldest man in the expedition, and his years of Arctic service gave him more such experience than anyone else on the Discovery except Koettlitz... The contrasts between Armitage and Scott were noteworthy. Armitage had a good deal of experience with ships under sail; Scott did not. Armitage had three years of polar work; Scott had none," (Scott of the Antarctic, Huxley). Cape Armitage, the southernmost point on Ross Island, is named in his honor. The Discovery voyage was the first led by Scott and was arranged by the Joint Antarctic Committee composed of members from the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. Known as the British National Antarctic Expedition, its achievements included the discovery of the polar plateau and Scott's ascent, the first ever, in a hot air balloon over Antarctica. Scott returned to Antarctica a second time aboard the Terra Nova. That expedition, which commenced in 1910, developed into a race against the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen to become the first to reach the South Pole. Amundsen attained the goal on January 4, 1912, beating Scott by two weeks. Scott's expedition ended tragically when he and four companions perished on their return march from the South Pole after failing to reach a supply depot. Following the Discovery expedition, Royds continued his career in the Royal Navy. While commanding the battleship HMS Emperor of India, he was given our lovely sterling silver platter to honor his marriage to Mary Louisa Blane, a widow and retired actress. After the war, Royds was an instructor at the Admiralty, retiring from the navy as a rear-admiral. Thereafter, he enjoyed a second career as deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police for which he received a knighthood. The back of the salver bears the hallmarks of "Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company 112 Regent Street W" and is etched with the numbers 97079 and 24090. The company's hallmark "G&S. Co. Ltd." is engraved in a trefoil alongside a heraldic lion, the head of an animal and the letter "B." Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company was a large firm comprised of jewelers and silversmiths established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. It started as Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company in 1898 and became part of Garrard & Co., Ltd. in 1952. A unique object. Professionally polished and in fine condition save for a few very faint scuffs.
