The stretcher measures 55 x 69 cm.Giuseppe Recco (1634-1695)Born in Naples, Giuseppe Recco mainly painted still lifes. He received his artistic training with his father Giacomo Recco and his uncle Giovanni Battista Recco. Tuscan School ca. 1420/40, Scenes from the Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller

by Lempertz

May 16, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €10,000 - €15,000

Description: The present panel, most likely part of a predella, depicts scenes from the life of Saint Julian the Hospitaller, patron saint of pilgrims, travellers and innkeepers. According to the Legenda Aurea, Julian is said to have killed his parents by accident, having mistaken them for his wife and her supposed lover. The scene on the right shows the Saint realising his mistake after meeting his wife shortly after. The present composition recalls of the famous example painted by Masaccio in 1426 for the church Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence (now in Berlin) in the symmetric division of the space and the simultaneous representation of the chronologically divided moments of the legend. Tuscan School ca. 1420/40

Anthonie Palamedesz, Two Interior Scenes with Soldiers and Figures

by Lempertz

May 16, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €14,000 - €15,000

Description: Both paintings signed lower left: APalamedesz (ligatured) The present works are typical of the Amsterdam genre painter Anthonie Palamedesz, who was taught by Michiel van Miereveld, Dirck Hals and even Frans Hals himself. His motifs are taken from contemporary life in Amsterdam. Whilst his elder brother Palamedes Palamedesz specialised in battle scenes, Anthonie was more concerned with the lives of the soldiers who fought in these battles, often depicting them in scenes of conversations by the fireside such as the present work or after their return to their families. The works are presented in corresponding frames and are in good overall condition. Anthonie Palamedesz
