Bouquet au Village, 1979

Lot 555: Bouquet au Village, 1979

by Martin Lawrence Gallery

March 13, 2015, 8:00 PM PST

La Jolla , CA, USA

Estimated Price: $545,000 - $550,000

Description: Bouquet au Village shows a large bouquet fighting to keep its color and cheer against the grey sobering village. Repeatedly depicted in Marc Chagall's works, the grey is symbolic of the hardships and the life events the artist has surpassed in his life. Chagall's rustic Russian Jewish upbringing combined with the history's era caused the artist to portray many of his village scenes in a shadowy grey color. However, to give the painting warmth and life, the couple in the sky and the bouquet is displayed allowing a glimpse of the love and happiness that he also experienced in his life. The artwork is a pastel, colored wax crayons, brush and India ink, with grey wash on paper, measuring 31 x 22.5 inches and is in a museum quality frame.
