Willem de Kooning Dutch/American, 1904-1997 Woman, 1965

Lot 31: Willem de Kooning Dutch/American, 1904-1997 Woman, 1965

by Doyle New York

November 11, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $200,000 - $400,000

Description: Willem de Kooning Dutch/American, 1904-1997 Woman, 1965 Signed de Kooning (ll); signed, dated and inscribed To Barbara and Roy/Goodman/East Hampton/1965/Willem de Kooning on notecard affixed to the reverse Oil on paper laid to panel 19 x 24 inches (48.26 x 60.96 cm) Accompanied by a 1965 photograph of the artwork being held by the artist, with Roy Goodman. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by Roy Goodman, East Hampton, 1965 Willem de Kooning created many small works in charcoal, oil, and pastel as he developed his ideas for larger paintings. When he painted these preliminary compositions in oil, he often worked on newsprint, as the paper slowed the drying time of his pigments. While his style and application are gestural and rapid, he nevertheless pondered his works with painstaking care, and spent great amounts of time reworking them by scraping and repainting. Even his drawings could not escape his obsessive desire to constantly change and rethink. These he reworked by tearing, collaging and smudging, never fully satisfied or quite able to consider a work completed. This search for perfection, and the struggle he undertook in the creation of his work imbues them with a kinetic energy that gives them life. The work presented here, titled "Woman," is dated 1965. This marks the artist's return to this theme after a decade of creating abstractions. Though all of his work can be said to represent either figures or landscapes, the subject of women is one clearly distinguished from his other themes, and he continued to return to this imagery throughout his career. The first woman to appear in his work came into his life in 1938, when he met a young art student, Elaine Fried, who later became his wife and lifelong confidant. She inspired his first paintings of women, a theme that he continued to explore until 1955, when he turned to abstracted landscapes. This was not an abrupt shift, but a gradual transition, as can be understood from Thomas B. Hess's recollection of a conversation with de Kooning in 1953, in which he said that "the landscape is in the Woman.and there is woman in the landscapes." As if drawn back by a lingering, unresolved problem, or perhaps unsatisfied passion, the artist again returned to the theme of women in the mid-sixties. In the works of this period, the figure no longer stood tall in the center of the canvas as before. Now he presented her as seated, either with knees drawn in toward her body, lying down, or seated with arms resting at 45-degree angles at her side, as here. Perhaps de Kooning's continuing exploration of the theme of Woman was another instance of his quest for perfection. He may have been returning to the safety of his boyhood fantasies of the American Woman, in pursuit of something reality had failed to offer. As Thomas B. Hess recalled, the art critic Harold Rosenberg related that de Kooning's reasons for coming to America were that "he wanted to get rich, then paint in his free time. And he had seen photographs of long-legged American girls." Notes: Hess, Thomas B., Willem de Kooning, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1968 THE HONORABLE ROY M. GOODMAN (1930-2014) The Honorable Roy M. Goodman was a dedicated advocate for the arts in New York and the nation for more than forty years. Born in New York City, Senator Goodman served for more than three decades in the New York State Senate, representing a large section of Manhattan's Upper East Side, including many distinguished museums and cultural institutions. During his tenure, which lasted from 1969 - 2002, he sponsored more than 1,200 bills, many focused on promoting the arts. As Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on the Arts and Cultural Affairs, he dedicated his energy, talent and political skills to supporting and sustaining many of New York's treasured cultural institutions - from Carnegie Hall to Town Hall. He was a Fellow for Life of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; a Patron of the Metropolitan Opera; a Patron of the New York Philharmonic Society; and President of the Goodman Family Foundation, a philanthropic trust. He was also President of the United Nations Development Corporation, an agency charged with building new offices for the United Nations. In addition to his role as the leading legislative advocate for the arts in New York, he served on the National Endowment for the Arts Council, the National Commission of Fine Arts, and the National Council on the Arts. The National Endowment for the Arts named Senator Goodman an Ambassador for the Arts "in recognition of his unwavering support of the arts and cultural affairs." C Estate of the Honorable Roy M. Goodman

Childe Hassam American, 1859-1935 Home Sweet Home Cottage #1, Easthampton, Long Island (John Howard Payne House), 1921

Lot 85: Childe Hassam American, 1859-1935 Home Sweet Home Cottage #1, Easthampton, Long Island (John Howard Payne House), 1921

by Doyle New York

November 5, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: Childe Hassam American, 1859-1935 Home Sweet Home Cottage #1, Easthampton, Long Island (John Howard Payne House), 1921 Signed Childe Hassam, inscribed Easthampton and dated June 15th, 1921 (ll) Graphite pencil and gouache on paper laid down to illustration board 11 1/4 x 13 1/4 inches Provenance: The artist, 1921 [With] The Leonard Clayton Gallery, New York Samuel Standard, New York By descent in the family to his nephew Norman Kellar, New Paltz, NY This accomplished drawing depicts the East Hampton home of John Howard Payne, best remembered for Home Sweet Home, the song he wrote in 1822 that became widely popular throughout the English-speaking world. The modest shingle lean-to, said to have inspired the composition, currently houses the Home Sweet Home Museum. According to Kathleen Burnside, "This drawing would certainly seem to have been done in preparation for Hassam's etching, titled The 'Home Sweet Home' Cottage, Easthampton, No. 1 which was catalogued first in 1925 in The Etchings and Dry-Points of Childe Hassam, N.A. of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, With an Introduction by Royal Cortissoz, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. It was listed as no. 174, p. 64: 'The Home Sweet Home Cottage, Easthampton 9-7/8 x 11-7/8 inches Signed: June C.H. 1921 in the lower right corner "Made from nature directly on the plate. Consequently subject is reversed. The gable end of the famous old house covered with vines stands behind a fence, which is also covered with vines. In the foreground to the left a large elm-tree which casts its shadow over the roadway. This is where the author of the world-wide known lyric passed his boyhood- and this old house was the motif of the celebrated song. First sung in London a century ago.' Interestingly, the Cortissoz catalogue does not note the existence of a related drawing, as it does for some other etchings. It also says done from nature. Yet the present drawing is undeniably related to this etching.... On the back of the framed drawing is a torn label from Leonard Clayton Gallery: Childe Hassam/ Home Sweet home Cottage #1 / Easthampton, Long Island / Done from... ne 25, 1921" There also exists a watercolor done by Hassam of this same subject, Home Sweet Home Cottage, watercolor, 9 x 11 ¼ inches, signed dated and inscribed at lower left: Childe Hassam. / 1921, Collection of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, New York. The image generally describes the house similarly to the present drawing, which suggests a possible date of 1921. It does not relate to the vantage points of the later etchings." We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Burnside for her kind assistance in documenting this work. It will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the work of Childe Hassam in preparation by Kathleen M. Burnside and Stuart P. Feld. C Estate of Norman Kellar

Condition Report: Paper toned. Discoloration around the edges. On the reverse is an old label from Rogers Peet & Co, Mens and Boys Outfitters, Broadway at 32nd St., New York. Carl Moritz Grossmann, Glashütte in Sachsen, Case No. 5806, 49 mm, 99 g, circa 1890

Lot 62: Carl Moritz Grossmann, Glashütte in Sachsen, Case No. 5806, 49 mm, 99 g, circa 1890

by Auktionen Dr. Crott

November 15, 2014, 12:00 PM CET

Frankurt, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,000 - €4,000

Description: A rare Glashuette pocket watch Case: 18k gold, tiered, polished, à goutte, signed and engine-turned gold dome. Dial: enamel, radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: 3/4 plate movement, frosted, gilt, screw compensation balance, fine florally engraved balance cock, gold lever and escape wheel. Carl Moritz Grossmann Carl Moritz Grossmann was born in Dresden on March 27, 1826; his father was a sorter at the Royal Court Post Office. Moritz grew up in modest circumstances, but his teachers at school soon realised that he was an exceptionally gifted pupil and he received a free place at the "Technische Bildungsanstalt" (which was later to become Dresden's Technical University). This enabled him to study for two years - just like Ferdinand Adolph Lange some years before him. In1842 Grossmann began his apprenticeship with the watchmaker Gottfried Friedrich Kumme (sen.) in Dresden and was allowed to end his apprenticeship early because of his unusual talent. He also learnt English, French and Italian; at the same time Grossmann became friends with the watchmaker Lange who was 11 years older. Both men were ambitious and meticulous workers, keen to learn and to build watches. His travels took Moritz Grossmann to Altona in 1847 where he worked with chronometer maker Moritz Krille; lafterwards he went to stay with watchmaker to the Munich court Josef Bierganz. He went on to the La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Swiss stronghold of the watchmaking industry; from there he traveled to England, France, Denmark and Sweden, always on the lookout for opportunities to learn and further his knowledge and abilities in watchmaking. He only returned to Dresden for a short while in 1854before moving to Glashuette, about 30 km from Dresden. In Glashuette Grossmann invented the „Glashuetter Drehstuhl", a small watchmaker's lathe. He began devoting himself to the construction of lever escapements and tried to perfect the pivoted detent escapement. He also built precision tools, movement models, fine pocket watches and marine chronometers. Grossmann mastered this multitude of tasks with a team of highly qualified colleagues; he was able to win the two expert watchmakers Ludwig Strasser and Carl Maucksch for his workshop. This allowed Grossmann not only to build his own watches but also pass his knowledge on to others. Grossmann gave lectures, wrote articles for national and international horological magazines and translated technical books such as Claudius Saunier's textbook on watchmaking „Lehrbuch der Uhrmacherei", which consisted of several volumes. In 1866 Grossmannwas the first German to win a competition at the British Horological Institute in London with his paper "On the detached lever". Moritz Grossmann was also very socially and politically active; he founded the volutary fire brigade of the sports club in Glashuette, the military club and supported the building of the railway link to the Mueglitz valley. After his wife died in 1871, he remarried and the couple had three children. In 1876 Grossmann became a member of the state parliament of Saxony. He initiated and created the concept for the German Watchmaking School in Glashuette; he founded the school in 1878 and served as its first chairman of the board and taught maths and languages at the school. Moritz Grossman died after a stroke on January 23, 1885 in Leipzig, shortly after holding a lecture on the introduction of Universal Time. Just like his friend Lange he was only 60 years oldwhen he died. After Grossmann's sudden death his factory in Glashuette was dissolved. Sincere thanks are given to the Grossmann Uhren GmbH for the text and the information provided. Cond.: Case: very good, slightly worn. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, slightly oxydized, capable of running, cleaning recommended.
