BEAN: Official History (all firsts)

Lot 20: BEAN: Official History (all firsts)

by Michael Treloar Antiquarian Booksellers

April 30, 2015, 7:00 PM ACST

Adelaide, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD1,200 - AUD1,500

Description: BEAN, Charles Edwin Woodrow (and others): Official History of Australia in the War, 1914-18 [series cover title of the complete twelve-volume set]. Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1921 to 1942 [ALL FIRST EDITIONS, respectively 1921, 1924, 1929, 1933, 1937, 1942, 1923, 1923, 1928, 1927, 1936 and 1923]. Octavo, twelve volumes, each approximately 700 pages with numerous maps plus plates. Original maroon cloth; a few spines are lightly sunned, others are a little marked, and two have visible but not disfiguring stains; some covers have bumped corners and minor unobtrusive marks, with those of Volume 9 a little stained, and those of Volume 6 heavily flecked; the front cover of Volume 10 has been expertly (and inconspicuously) replaced with a close-matching cover from another volume; all top edges are a little dusty (and a few lightly marked); early ownership signature in one volume; trifling signs of use and age, but overall a very presentable set. Footnote: The last volume has the ownership details of S.R. Kent, 20th Battalion (598 Quartermaster Sergeant Stanley Roy Kent), and an inscription by another person donating the book to the Minlaton Institute. Given the twenty-two years it took for the twelve volumes to be published, with many reprints along the way (some volumes being reprinted upwards of fifteen times), complete sets of first editions are rarely found (and then more often than not, the cloth is not entirely uniform in colour, as here). Dornbusch 209 (the complete set), 353 (Volumes 1-2), 294-297 (Volumes 3-6), 391 (Volume 7), 374 (Volume 10), 219 (Volume 11) and 223 (Volume 12); Fielding and O'Neill, page 208 (the complete set); Trigellis-Smith 725-36 (the complete set). Dornbusch often provides useful information about dates of reprints and revised editions. [12 items].
