Helen Lowe Kendall (Am., 1892-1970), Archive of 23 Modernist Studies

by Leland Little Auctions

June 12, 2015, 6:00 PM EST

Hillsborough, NC, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: late 1940s-1950s, unsigned, gouache on paper, mounted to board. These are studies for paintings that appeared in early exhibitions at the Guggenheim, formerly the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, as well as exhibitions in Paris with The Art of Tomorrow group including Hilla Rebay, director of the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, and Rolph Scarlett, the museum's Chief Lecturer. Included is the artist's copy of Wassily Kandinsky's POINT AND LINE TO PLANE (New York: The Solomon Guggenheim Foundation, 1947), signed by Kendall and inscribed "Souvenir of a dash for balance," plus a later signature of art professor Everett Adelman.  Largest sheet approximately 8.5 x 11; all matted to 20.25 x 16 in. Helen L. Kendall studied under Arthur Wesley Dow before pursuing her own career in art education. She taught at Hampton Institute in Virginia, established by the American Missionaries Association to educate African Americans. Kendall's circle was divided between the Institute, where she was an influential teacher of John Biggers, and New York City, where she maintained a studio at Carnegie Hall with the groundbreaking African American soprano Dorothy Maynor, also a graduate of Hampton Institute. Many of Kendall's works, especially those exhibited at the Museum of Non-objective Painting (now the Guggenheim Museum), were reflections of musical compositions. She also was involved in the spiritual movements of theosophy and anthroposophy emanating from Switzerland. Kendall and fellow artist Rolph Scarlett were intimate companions, often working together in his studio. The main body of Helen Kendall's work is in the collection of Hampton University. From the Estate of Helen Lowe Kendall by descent to nephew Professor Everett Mayo Adelman

Early, Jubal A

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: Early, Jubal A. (1816-1894) Confederate general. War-date autograph letter signed ("J.A. Early") as Brigadier General, 1 page, 10 1/2 x 8 in., Camp Ellis, Fairfax, County, September 16, 1861. To Virginia Governor John Letcher, regarding the condition of the 24th Virginia Volunteers: "I wrote to you ten days ago informing you that by reason of my appointment as Brigadier General in the Army of the Confederate States, the position of Colonel of the 24th Va. Regiment was vacant, and recommending Captain William R. Terry of Bedford...for the appointment - I have as yet heard nothing from you. The regiment is in a very bad condition for want of a Commanding officer and is past deteriorating in any particular. The interests of the regiment and the service require that the regiment should have a Colonel of experience and capacity...Captain Terry is the person best qualified that I know. He is a graduate of the Institute and a first rate soldier. He comes from the same section of country and is known to a considerable portion of the regiment. The regiment has been quite unfortunate. The Lieutenant Colonel is sick, the Major has resigned, the Surgeon Qr. master & commissary are all sick, and nearly one half of the men are sick. If a complete stranger were put in command of the regiment it would have a very depressing influence and I think it will be your pleasure to appoint forthwith Captain Terry as Colonel of the regiment." At top verso, Early wrote, "Direct to Manassas Junction."After Virginia seceded in April 1861, Early served as colonel commanding the 24th Virginia Infantry Regiment. In June 1861 he took command of the Army of the Potomac's 6th Brigade. He was promoted to brigadier general after fighting courageously at the First Battle of Bull Run (July 1861), near Manassas, Virginia. Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500 Christie's New York, June 9, 2004, lot 259.
