Thanks to the intercession of Carl Otto Czeschka (1878-1960), Kokoschka was allowed to study at the arts school where he stayed from 1905 until 1909. He moved to Berlin in 1910 where he illustrated the expressionist magazine Der Sturm and had a huge exhibition in Paul Cassirer’s gallery. TheOskar Kokoschka Bund was founded in Prague with the aim of contradicting the ‘artistic’ machinations of the National Socialists and to support Kokoschka. In 1938, Kokoschka fled to England and became a British citizen in 1946 (he only re-accepted the Austrian citizenship in 1975). The twelve framed sheets are designed in different colors and show twelve scenes of Homer’s Odyssey. The epic tells the adventures of King Odysseus and his companions.André Masson (1896-1987)The painter and graphic artist André Masson was born in Balagny, a village on Ile de France. In 1904 Masson moved to Brussels where he attended the academy of fine arts. In 1912 André Masson went to Paris. There Masson was admitted to the Paul Baudoin studio at the 'Ecole National Superieure des Beaux-Arts'. When the war broke out, Masson became a soldier. In 1917 he was severely injured and spent several months in an army hospital. In 1922 André Masson returned to Paris, where his art was influenced by André Derrain and Cubism. A little later he met the Surrealist artists and subsequently joined the movement in 1924. In protest against Breton's authoritarian claim to leadership Masson left the group five years later. Surrealism gave Masson access to the irrational and the psychological roots of art. With the help of 'écriture automatique', an automatic script, which is derived from the subconscious, Masson tried to explore the depths of the irrational and the psychological roots of art. Masson's desire was turn his own vision into reality and "not to photograph the event of the day". Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Bearded Mask by Marian Owczarski

by The Loft Fine Art

May 15, 2015, 3:00 PM EST

Clinton Township, MI, USA

Description: This stainless steel mask seems to be a man wearing a jagged beard. A unique variety of textures and colors found in the metal medium make this one of a kind. Marian Owczarski (1932-2010) served as Artist-in-Residence at St. Mary's Galleria in Orchard Lake, MI for almost 40 years. Owczarski explained that stainless steel was his chosen medium because steel represented the future. Plus, the melt temperature of stainless steel is nearly 5000 degrees. Stainless will be around after a nuclear holocaust. Born in Poland, he was the only living member of his family after World War II. He began sculpting in 1945 and emigrated to the US in 1970. His works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and reflect heavily on his experiences as a survivor of war and trauma.

Andrew Jackson document signed prior to attack on Ft Bowyer, AL

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $950 - $1,250

Description: One Week Prior to Repelling the British Attack on Fort Bowyer, Alabama - JACKSON, ANDREW. (1767-1845). Seventh president of the United States and hero of the War of 1812. Manuscript DS. (“Andrew Jackson / Major Genl Comdg”). 1p. Oblong 12mo. Mobile, September 7, 1814. To Captain John Truirt [?]. ----- “Rec[eive]d of Captain John Truirt AD Q[uarter] M[aster] Gen[era]l this 7th day of Sept[embe]r 1814 at Mobile the sum of Seventy five dollars in full of the above account having signed duplicates hereof witness…” ----- The treaties signed with the Creek Nation in the early part of the 19th century gave the United States territory in Georgia and allowed it to build a road linking Washington and New Orleans, but increasing American encroachment became a divisive issue within the Creek Nation, creating two warring factions. During the War of 1812, the Red Sticks, who opposed assimilation and resented white settlements, allied themselves with Britain and Spain, who supplied them with arms. In July 1813, American troops intercepted Red Stick Creeks after they obtained weapons from the Spanish, which set off the Battle of Burnt Corn, a Creek victory and the first direct conflict between Creeks and Americans. Roughly a month later, the Creeks overran Fort Mims, near Mobile, and massacred nearly 250 of its inhabitants, including soldiers, settlers and mixed-blood Creeks. Thereafter, thousands of settlers fled the wilderness for Mobile, which swelled in size. Federal troops were focused on fighting the British in the Northeast, prompting Georgia, the Mississippi Territory and Tennessee to raise their own militias. Jackson commanded 2,500 volunteers from Tennessee. A turning point in the war against the Creeks came with Jackson’s victory at Alabama’s Battle of Horseshoe Bend in March 1814. In August, Jackson strong-armed the Creek Nation into signing the Treaty of Fort Jackson that forced the Creek Nation to cede to the U.S. 23 million acres of land across central Alabama and Southern Georgia. The Creek defeat earned Jackson the rank of major general and national acclaim upon which he built a political career. After the treaty-signing, Jackson led his troops to Fort Bowyer in Mobile, the former capital of French Louisiana that the Americans claimed under the 1804 Mobile Act. In 1810, American forces began to occupy the then Spanish-held city, which finally surrendered to the Americans in February 1813. Fort Bowyer was quickly constructed to repel British attacks, the first of which came on September 14-16, 1814, just one week after Jackson signed our document. The Royal Navy, underestimating the extent of the fortifications, was soundly defeated, leaving them to turn their attention to New Orleans. On December 23rd, Jackson repulsed the British attack on New Orleans, during which he famously stated, “By the Eternal they shall not sleep on our soil.” Following the first siege of Fort Bowyer, Jackson ordered extended fortification of the garrison to repulse another possible British attack. His foresight proved correct; after the American victory at New Orleans, British forces again laid siege to Fort Bowyer from February 7-12, 1815, in what became the final land engagement of the war. Despite Jackson’s additional fortifications, the British captured the fort and took control of Mobile Bay. However, before there was any additional fighting, word reached Mobile that the Treaty of Ghent, signed on December 24, 1814, had ended the war. Irregular paper loss in both margins just touching the final stroke of the letter “n” of Jackson’s signature. Otherwise in very good condition. Documents signed by Major General Jackson during this period are rare.

Five years later, she succeeded Susan B. Anthony as president of the Association, and in 1904 helped found the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, whose president she remained until 1923. Catt served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1915 on, and it was her leadership, organizational skills, and "Winning Plan" that finally resulted in the successful adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920. After that victory, Catt continued to work for woman suffrage on an international level, and she was active in movements for world peace and disarmament.
