Two Military Commissions Signed by Massachusetts Governor Caleb Strong

Lot 414265: Two Military Commissions Signed by Massachusetts Governor Caleb Strong

by Locati Auctions

April 21, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Maple Glen, PA, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $200

Description: One dated 1815 and electing Samuel W. Duncan to the position of Major, the other dated 1813 electing Robert Tenney to the position of Captain. Both signed by Massachusetts governor Caleb Strong and Secretary of the Commonwealth Alden Bradord. Also included in the lot are two engravings of Caleb Strong. From Wikipedia: "Caleb Strong (January 9, 1745 - November 7, 1819) was a Massachusetts lawyer and politician who served as the sixth and tenth Governor of Massachusetts between 1800 and 1807, and again from 1812 until 1816. He assisted in drafting the Massachusetts State Constitution in 1779 and served as a state senator and on the Massachusetts Governor's Council before being elected to the inaugural United States Senate. A leading member of the Massachusetts Federalist Party, his political success delayed the decline of the Federalists in Massachusetts. A successful Northampton lawyer prior to 1774, Strong was politically active in the rebel cause during the American Revolutionary War. He played an influential role in the development of the United States Constitution at the 1788 Philadelphia Convention, and, as a US Senator, in the passage of its 11th Amendment. He also played a leading role in the passage of the Judiciary Act of 1789, which established the federal court system."

Condition Report: The 1815 example is in very good condition with toning, a few small tears and tape reinforcement to the back of some of the creases. The 1813 example is in two pieces (split along the crease line) and is in poor condition, with foxing, toning, and losses. The image areas of the etchings are in good condition while the margins are folded in.

Document Bearing the Signature of John Brooks, Patriot and 11th Governor of Massachusetts

Lot 414266: Document Bearing the Signature of John Brooks, Patriot and 11th Governor of Massachusetts

by Locati Auctions

April 21, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Maple Glen, PA, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $200

Description: A document dated 1820, electing Ebenezer Warner to the position of Ensign. Signed by acting governor John Brooks as well as Secretary of the Commonwealth Alden Bradford. From Wikipedia: "John Brooks (baptized May 4, 1752 - March 1, 1825) was a doctor, military officer, and politician from Massachusetts. He served as the 11th Governor of Massachusetts from 1816 to 1823, and was one of the last Federalist officials elected in the United States. Trained as a doctor, Brooks was an officer of the Reading, Massachusetts militia when the American Revolutionary War broke out, and led his troops in the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He served under George Washington in the New York and New Jersey campaign of 1776, although he missed the Battle of Trenton due to illness. In 1777 he was part of the relief force for the Siege of Fort Stanwix, and led a successful assault against British positions in the key Second Battle of Saratoga. He played a significant role in the 1783 Newburgh Conspiracy, in which he helped quash ideas of mutiny in the Continental Army. After the war he returned to medical practice, but continued to be active in the state militia, helping to put down Shays' Rebellion in 1787. He served in the militia during the War of 1812, after which he was elected governor. Brooks was popular and politically moderate, and came to personify the "Era of Good Feelings" that followed the war. He retired in 1823, and died two years later."

Condition Report: Expected toning, minor losses, creasing, a few small tears as well as one large tear at the left margin. The signature area is intact.

by Robb Partners LLC

April 21, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

Bluffton, SC, USA

Estimated Price: $1,650 - $2,500

Description: National Arms Company single shot No.2 Deringer, serial #369, .41 RF, 2 1/2" barrel with a mostly bright very good plus bore which shows some scattered light oxidation with some light pitting near the muzzle. The barrel is primarily a smooth pewter and brown patina with some very minor pinprick pitting and oxidation, also with a number of impact marks along its right sharp edge. The brass frame retains about 92-95% original silver plating which is darkening to a deep blue-gray hue, the worn-through areas a dull ocher. The engraving on the frame is still sharp, the barrel slightly softened. The smooth rosewood grips rate about excellent with nearly all their original varnish, the left grip showing slightly more wear along its sharp edge; they are stamp-numbered to the gun. The half-cock notch is slightly worn so the firing pin does not completely clear the breech allowing the gun to open; retracting the hammer slightly will allow the barrel to pivot freely, its lockup is tight
