[Texas Revolution]. José Maria Tornel Autograph Letter

Lot 53178: [Texas Revolution]. José Maria Tornel Autograph Letter

by Heritage Auctions

March 14, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,000

Description: [Texas Revolution]. José Maria Tornel Autograph Letter Signed "Tornel." Three pages, 8.25" x 13", in Spanish, Mexico, May 21, 1836. Interesting letter from Secretary of War and Marine José Maria Tornel to the governor of Queretaro (state just north of Mexico City) relating to the war in Texas, written following the Battle of San Jacinto and the capture of General Santa Anna calling for reinforcements to fight the Texans. In hopes of freeing the captive Santa Anna and avenging national honor, Tornel devises a plan against the "ungrateful treacherous foreigners," calling upon the Governor of Queretaro to send an additional 128 troops to Mexico City in precisely 19 days "to vigorously continue the war on Texas, until leaving well placed the national honor, to assure all the interests of the Republic, and to obtain the liberty of the Distinguished one of the Country, His Excellency General President Don Antonio de Santa Anna". Unbeknownst to Tornel, seven days before issuing this letter, Santa Anna signed the Treaties of Velasco which promised recognition of Texas independence by the Mexican government. Housed in a quarter-bound marbled paper and brown leather case with integral brown cloth chemise. Light ink bleed-through with slight toning to the edges. Substantial letters from the Mexican side relating to the Texas Revolution are scarce, this one being fresh and clean, with particularly attractive holography.

RARE & UNUSUAL CIVIL WAR 11 STRIPE AND 33 STAR FLAG.

Lot 1386: RARE & UNUSUAL CIVIL WAR 11 STRIPE AND 33 STAR FLAG.

by James D. Julia

March 15, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Fairfield, ME, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: 33 star flag was official at the outbreak of the Civil War representing the State of Oregon which became a state July 4, 1859. Kansas was brought in as a state officially July 4, 1861, so 33 stars adorned the flag at Ft. Sumter when fired upon. This particular flag is well made of light weight blended bunting with cotton stars and hoist. Flag utilizes a sewn-in rope hoist, possibly for ships use. Flag measures 74" on hoist and 104" on fly and was probably longer when orig made. Fly end has numerous contemporary repairs and additions, keeping it in use. This is an unusual Civil War flag that appears to have seen a fair amount of use. CONDITION: Flag is good to very good overall with good colors, areas of soiling, insect damage, fraying and repairs at fly end. Flag has several contemporary repairs and a couple more recent as noted by different thread types. Flag is constructed with a mix of hand stitching and a chain stitch not typical of Civil War flags, though we believe it is of Civil War era origin made with a machine that was quite rare (we have examined at least one documented Civil War Confederate National flag made in Bermuda with the same style of stitch utilizing similar two-ply "S-twist" machine thread). The lack of additional two stripes could potentially represent the 11 seceding states and that could explain the unusual construction as we know of no Civil War flags manufactured in the continental United States utilizing the sewing machine noted. 4-55343

by Heritage Auctions

March 14, 2015, 11:00 AM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: [Spanish Texas]. Champ d'Asile Creamware Plate. 8.5" diameter and featuring a scene of French veterans of the Napoleonic Wars developing the Champ d'Asile settlement in Texas in 1818 along the Trinity River. Even though the veterans abandoned the settlement only six months after its founding, the French public developed an appreciation for Texas, which led them to become the first European nation to recognize the Republic of Texas two decades later. "Champs d'aisle" appears below the scene on the face of the plate. On the reverse, "CREIL 14" appears, along with a stamp too faint to read. Some signs of use.
