June 3, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Poland, by Moshe Vorobeichik-Raviv. Tel Aviv, [1946].Portfolio containing 10 photograph prints of Jewish figures in Poland."The photos compiled here were taken while travelling through Poland during the pre-war years. I meant only to "catch" here and there the typical and interesting, from an illustrative-photographic angle only, and these photos do not represent the entirety of Polish Jewry".Originally Vorobeichik planned to publish an additional series of photos but the project was not feasible since "there was a shortage of paper and bad printing conditions". The portfolio includes the original cover leaf (the title "Poland" printed in red, on the background of a "Yizkor" prayer commemorating the Namyriv 1648 victims) and a leaf with a poem by Avraham Broides. [1] leaf (cover); [2] leaves; [10] plates; [1] leaf, 27 cm. In a cardboard portfolio. Good condition. Stains and minor tears. Damages to cardboard portfolio.

[World War II]. (14) official U.S. Army maps.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: 155. [World War II]. Major General Geoffrey Keyes’ (14) official U.S. Army maps of various sizes, from (13.5 x 16 in. to 13.5 x 35 in. to 343 x 406 mm. to 343 x 889 mm.), in a handmade map portfolio, consisting of two (14 x 18 in.; 356 x 457 mm.) pine boards painted dark olive military green with pasted black oilcloth spine and three attached cotton strings (one missing). A large insignia of the Second Corps, the Roman numeral “II”, is painted in blue and white on the front cover board. Mostly folded, the majority are combination geographical / topographical maps. In some cases, portions of maps were pasted on larger maps. Trimming and reassembly by Keyes to fit his needs has resulted in the partial loss of mapmaker information. Some maps are linen-backed for long-term heavy use. Many of the maps were set into large, heavy clear acetate sleeves with old plastic tape remnants at the margins. Some maps are stamped “CONFIDENTIAL” in red. Map areas include Rome, Milan, Verona, Pisa, Bologna, Florence, Venice, Arezzo, Viterbo, Orvieto, Grosseto La Spezia, Campiglia, Elba, Massa, Castiglione, etc. Also present is Keyes' clear plastic 12 x 8.5 in. “Map Template” divided into 16 one hundred plot mark areas, set to a scale of 1/20,000 yards. Two post-war Army maps are present: one showing the Command Posts of the 1101 Engineer Combat Group in France and Germany, 15 July 1944 to 9 May 1945 (29 x 20.5 in.; 737 x 521 mm.) and the other (28.5 x 11.25 in.; 724 x 286 mm.) chronicles the campaigns of the “Third US Army” from August 1944 to May 1945. Minor flaws as would be expected, including toning in areas on some maps. Included is Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes’ uniform ribbon bar worn by him representing his Army Distinguished Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and a small bar to be worn in the button hole on the lapel. In its original handmade portfolio, a remarkable assemblage of the maps owned by Major General Geoffrey Keyes, Patton’s Deputy Commander, used during the successful Italian campaign as commander of the Second (II) Corps contemporaneous to the D-Day Invasion - with his ribbon bar Distinguished Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters – from the Estate of Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes.Major General Geoffrey Keyes was assigned the command of the II Corps after Anzio in January 1944. He was Deputy Commander to Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. and commanded his newly created Provisional U.S. Army Corps in Sicily. Keyes succeeded Lt. Gen. Omar Bradley as commander of the II Corps – Bradley had succeeded Patton in April 1943. Keyes was promoted to Lieutenant General in April 1945.On 5 June 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt began his address to the nation thusly, “My Friends: Yesterday, on 4 June1944, Rome fell to American and Allied troops. The first of the Axis capitals is now in our hands. One up and two to go!...” $15,000 - $20,000

MacArthur, Douglas

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: MacArthur, Douglas. (1880-1964) U.S. general who served with distinction in France during World War I, was commanding general of U.S. forces in Asia during World War II, and commanded the occupation of Japan following the war; he was relieved of his command in 1951 after publicly questioning President Truman's policy in the Korean War. Small, personal Japanese flag inscribed and signed, "Best wishes, Harry, / Douglas MacArthur / Tokyo. 1946," 11 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. The flag was given by MacArthur to his friend, General Harry Vaughn. Translated, the Japanese characters say: "Everlasting Success in War!" When they went off to war, Japanese soldiers were often given small flags, inscribed with sentiments such as this, by family, friends, or business associates.General MacArthur spend five and a half years in Tokyo as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, overseeing the occupation of Japan and the transformation of that devastated country into a modern democracy. General Harry H. Vaughn (1893-1981) had served alongside Harry Truman in World War I and the Army Reserves between the wars. Truman became a senator from Missouri and Vaughn went back to active service in World War II. He was injured in a plane crash in Australia in 1943, and while being treated at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, was transferred to the staff of the Senate Armed Services subcommittee, headed by Senator Truman, which was investigating arms procurement. As an investigator for the committee, General Vaughan uncovered numerous instances of deception by the munitions industry, which led to national prominence for Truman, and his selection as FDR's running mate in 1944. When he became Vice President, Truman named Vaughn his military aid. He supported Vaughn through accusations of influence peddling, accepting gifts for himself and friends, and accepting a medal from Argentina's neofascist government. The men remained friends and enjoyed playing poker and drinking bourbon and branch water together. Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500

In 1905 he completed a mason apprenticeship and worked as a building mason. In his spare time he created sculptures that were stylistically influenced by Auguste Rodin. In 1911 he met Georges Braque who gave him an understanding of cubism. In 1913, Henri Laurens exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. From 1927 on Laurens began to model his sculptures, mostly female nudes, with organic-voluminous forms instead of the geometrical forms of cubism.
